The good, the bad and the ugly of online mattress shopping

Recommended Posts

We are hoping to find a king mattress on black friday or over the holidays & I have never ordered a mattress online.  I'd hate to order something online then totally hate the mattress a month later.  You can find good and bad reviews for all mattresses.  Also, please let me know if you see any deals on mattresses!

How is it to order a mattress online, how was your experience?

Do you have a brand you would reccomend or stay away from?

Did you check out mattresses locally beforehand or just order blind and hope for the best?  I feel like we should go to a mattress store and sit on some mattresses, but I don't want to be pressured by salesmen.

Are they returnable if you order them online and don't like them?

I went to a mattress store and tried them out before ordering online. I only did that because it was cheaper online but the store might match the price. The mattresses in the box are extremely heavy. So if you have stairs be prepared for a fight. You will need a hand truck to move it and it will need to stay laid out for 24 hours before you can enjoy it.

We ordered our sons on line, it was one of those purple memory foam ones. His cousin had one and really like it so I ordered the same one from amazon and he has been happy with it. Agreed box it came in was heavy and need to leave it out for 24 hours for it fill out.

Nope, I would never do it without going to a store and trying them out. It is too big of a decision to trust to online. We just bought 2 mattresses in thr past year and most places we weren't pressured. The one we were, we just left and didn't buy from them.

I bought my mattress online from QVC. I totally let them convince me I needed it. And since it was the first new mattress I'd ever bought, I thought the price was ok (news flash, it was too much). They did have a 100 night return policy, that they said was no questions asked, and they'd come pick it up.

I loved my mattress at first, and I don't think I would have really learned anything trying it out in store. I had been sleeping on it for a while before I decided the hip area is killing me. LOL

To be honest a lot of it comes down to what do you want to spend. The cheaper ones will usually do for now, the more expensive ones are for many years. We ended up going to a hybrid memory foam/coils. It gave us the best of both worlds. We also did an adjustable frame.

We bought a mattress from Amazon last year, during Prime Day. Our old mattress had gotten to the point where I'd wake up in agony every day, with my back hurting, but we didn't have a ton of money to buy a Tempurpedic, and I didn't want it to take a lot of running around and trying out different mattresses. We considered memory foam, but I didn't want to have to buy a platform for it, so I decided I wanted something that we could still use our box spring with. That meant we needed to buy a hybrid, which is still much cheaper than a regular mattress and box spring set. I looked at several on Amazon, read the reviews, and knew I needed something at least semi firm, because the softer the mattress, the more my back hurts in the morning. And I knew I wanted a thicker mattress. We ended up with a 14" zelovtress, and I LOVE it! My husband says it's a little too firm for him, but I never wake up with my back hurting anymore, and I think it's SO comfy! The only thing I can be critical of is that the 14" mattress is a bit too high. I'm about 5'6" and I can't just sit on it, I have to hoist myself onto it, lol. But for the comfort of it, I'll deal with it.

Over the last 2 decades I have bought all of my mattress (3 queens 1 twin) & have been really happy with all of them. I read all of the bad reviews to see what their chief complaint was… I look at the materials used & compare to high end mattress and then make my decision.

We bought our mattress in store but only because DH really liked it.  I personally would have been fine ordering online because I can sleep on anything and it doesn't bother me but if you have any sort of issues or if you like a certain firmness I'd go into the store.  I know it took my DH about 2 months to notice anything with this mattress.  We were told it was great for your back blah blah...and after 2 months I can say that he seems to have less back issues in the morning.  But there is no way to know that when you first buy it.
