DaveSimmons Posted August 1, 2006 Posted August 1, 2006 Nice deal for a basic computer, this would be a good computer for your own work or to set up an email and photos PC for the parents. The built-in card reader will help if you/they have a digital camera. You might pick up a 256 - 512 MB RAM stick to go with it. Check what kind you need at www.crucial.com, and use their price as the limit on what you should pay. Note this has almost zero gaming power, except for web flash games.
RossMAN Posted August 1, 2006 Posted August 1, 2006 This is another reminder that hot deals can be had year round, you don't have to wait until Black Friday. As DaveSimmons suggested, I would upgrade the RAM. 512MB for $40 shipped giving you a total of 768MB or sell the original 256MB on eBay/Craigslist for ~$25.
icanhabsum Posted August 2, 2006 Posted August 2, 2006 I think this + that Hp is only the begining of more intel-powered deals
RossMAN Posted August 2, 2006 Posted August 2, 2006 I think this + that Hp is only the begining of more intel-powered deals The ultimate bargain laptop would be a Pentium-M, 512MB, 40GB, combo DVD-CD-RW, WiFi for $499 with free shipping.
Mike Posted August 2, 2006 Posted August 2, 2006 The ultimate bargain laptop would be a Pentium-M, 512MB, 40GB, combo DVD-CD-RW, WiFi for $499 with free shipping.I would be willing to bet we will see something like that this BF, though it will probably come with 256mb of DDR only. An easy upgrade gets you very decent, very cheap laptop.
bovichtj Posted August 2, 2006 Posted August 2, 2006 Okay, My anniversary is this week, and since DH bought himself a 56" Samsung 1080 DLP, I decided I would like a laptop. Just for internet surfing and games (like pogo.com)... Would this be a good choice??? We have an e-machines T3256 for our desktop, and AT&T DSL, so we would need a router... (And our local BB is still in stock :) ) Should I jump? Joanne
RossMAN Posted August 2, 2006 Posted August 2, 2006 Joanne, Yes and I would pay with a credit card which offers a free 1 year extended warranty. CitiBank, Amex and others offer this. Do you know if you'll be paying with a VISA, MC or Amex cc? Don't forget to upgrade the RAM which is easy and takes less than 5 minutes.
bovichtj Posted August 2, 2006 Posted August 2, 2006 Definitely VISA :) We were going to purchase a RAM upgrade from zipzoomfly or the like... Guess I will pack up the kids and head out! Thanks... I thought this was too good to turn down :) Joanne
RossMAN Posted August 2, 2006 Posted August 2, 2006 Before you leave please call VISA 1-800-882-8057 and ask if your credit card is eligible for warranty manager?
RossMAN Posted August 2, 2006 Posted August 2, 2006 Definitely VISA :)We were going to purchase a RAM upgrade from zipzoomfly or the like... Here's 512MB for $39.99 AR with free shipping @ ZZF
bovichtj Posted August 2, 2006 Posted August 2, 2006 Before you leave please call VISA 1-800-882-8057 and ask if your credit card is eligible for warranty manager? Thanks again! We are eligible for the extended warranty...they match the time if under 1 yr and add 1yr if over 1 yr... What about this laptop???http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7902978&type=product&id=1149206615548HP Pavillion 410 Seems to be a better deal; I would have to drive 1/2 hr, but is it worth the drive? Joanne
RossMAN Posted August 2, 2006 Posted August 2, 2006 You're right, the HP is a better deal. After comparing the specs side by side, I would buy the HP over the Gateway. It has more RAM, S Video out, FireWire and more.
bovichtj Posted August 2, 2006 Posted August 2, 2006 Okee Dokee! We're hoppin' in the car... I called and they have 1 in stock... wish me luck! Back with an update in about 1.5 hrs... Joanne
RossMAN Posted August 2, 2006 Posted August 2, 2006 Here are the complete specs for the HP dv1708nr. Impressive laptop for only $399 out the door with no rebate hassles!
VTmommy Posted August 2, 2006 Posted August 2, 2006 none of the HPs anywhere in VT, NH, ME or MA! The "local" store (an hour away) has 3 of the Gateways in transit and expected in the shipments rec'd either tonight (Wed) or Friday. I will need to check online for status tomorrow AM and/or Sat AM and perhaps I can snag one for work...My husband has staked a claim on the Dell Inspiron 1705 I got last month! LOL
bovichtj Posted August 2, 2006 Posted August 2, 2006 I GOT IT!!! Hooray! One guy thought they were out, and had been telling people it was gone... and 2 girls were there looking at the Gateway (which ended up being OOS)... I just spoke up and said "I'll take the HP!" and the guy found it and rang it up :) The other girls walked out empty-handed.... Thanks, everybody! Now I'll have to head over to the Tech forum and find out how to set up a router for the wireless business :) Joanne
tfinch2 Posted August 4, 2006 Posted August 4, 2006 FYI, this Gateway notebook only has 1 memory slot. If you want to upgrade, you're better off buying a 1 GB stick.
Mike Posted August 4, 2006 Posted August 4, 2006 I would be willing to bet we will see something like that this BF, though it will probably come with 256mb of DDR only. hendricksonet Posted August 6, 2006 Posted August 6, 2006 Well, it’s not a Pentium M, only Celeron M. Still is great for the price! I picked this laptop up last week for my wife. It definitely needs an upgrade in RAM. I ordered a 1 GB stick from newegg which should be here tomorrow. My brother bought a gateway a few months ago which was a bigger version of this. It has the beefier process, graphics card, monitor, etc. One thing that I suggest is if you have an actual copy of windows XP laying around try formatting and installing that copy….not the CD that comes with the laptop. He had about a 2.5 – 3hr battery life when he first bought it….after the clean install his battery life jumped to 4 hours. We guess it has something to do with all the crap that comes on the computer and backup CD. I haven’t gotten around to that yet, but I’m guessing next week I’ll see if it works for me. Overall a great laptop for the price.
