bayhaysay Posted February 17, 2006 Posted February 17, 2006 That doesn't suprise me. Around here, the only time Radio Shack is even worth going into is ono Black Friday. I can find everything that Radio Shack has alot sheaper somewhere else.

Is there a list somewhere of the stores that will be closing?
Corporate Gal Posted February 17, 2006 Posted February 17, 2006 When I was a kid there was no Best Buy or its kin in our suburb so my father used to go to Radio Shack for a certain type of watch battery. The store was always deserted. He never bought appliances there though- always trekked to Circuit City for that. I'm amazed Radio Shack stayed in business this long as the stores always look dead.
labgeek Posted February 17, 2006 Posted February 17, 2006 None of the stores I worked at while I was in college was dead... Heck on Saturdays, we'd have 4 or 5 people working and a line waiting to check out. And I was always at some of the smaller stores...
daz Posted February 17, 2006 Posted February 17, 2006 The one closest to me is usually busy, but they have the RS name only (Independently owned) so they sell higher end electronics than 99% of radio shacks. They are still the only place I can find components locally (resistors, capacitors, switches...that sort of geek thing) but otherwise, everything they sell is cheaper somewhere else. Unless of course you WANT to buy Optimus car speakers or some other garbage.
daz Posted February 17, 2006 Posted February 17, 2006 With the KB Toys, Toys R Us, Compusa, and now Radio Shack closing news..... We are woefully edging closer to a walmart owned world. (especially with the news WM will sell high end electronics to compete with BB and CC), ugh, the end is near......
pkripper001 Posted February 18, 2006 Posted February 18, 2006 Radio Shack went down hill when they did away with free monthly battery cards, free yearly catalogs, a free monthly catalog subcription that you did not have to buy some thing every month to get. they moved to a stand alone store where i am at a long time ago and i have never went in since that move. black friday was not even all that for them.
BigBob Posted February 20, 2006 Posted February 20, 2006 RS used to be a fairly decent place to get common electronic parts and other gadgets for the electronics hobbyist. The staff in the stores was fairly knowledgeable about basic electronics. That was in the 1970's on into the early 1980's. Then RS started drifting away from the hobbyist market and focussed on the computer, cell phone, telephone, and electronic "appliance" markets. The staff went downhill quickly. They seldom had answers to even my simplest questions or requests. Lots of blank stares is what I usually got. I asked them to find a fuse holder for me a few weeks ago and they got out a box of automotive fuses and said that they came with a free fuse holder -- the box they came in! The stories are endless. There used to be a web site that collected RS horror stories but I haven't looked at it lately ... it was a mix of funny stories, overselling attempts, and stories of RS clerks endangering customer safety with their faulty advice. I use RS as a "supplier of last resort" and only when I absolutely have to have something that actually might be in stock. Their prices are always 2-5 times higher than other suppliers for even the simplest components. And the quality is often questionable. So ... why are we shocked and amazed that RS is closing stores? It's been coming on for a long time and most of us in the electronics world knew it was inevitable. I'm betting that this batch of closures is only the beginning of the slide into oblivion.
ShawnainKY02 Posted February 24, 2006 Posted February 24, 2006 If anyone finds a list of the store that are closing let me know. Thanks.
