Jenni O is what we have had for the past two years and they are very good.

I would suggest looking to buy earlier than later, even if the price per pound is a few cents more than the steal you mentioned from last year. Why? Grocery stores - and especially Wal-Mart - that are "EDLP" (Every Day Low Price) strategize around the entire basket that is typically purchased. They know exactly what the average consumer is looking for and will jack up prices on items complementary to Thanksgiving Dinner... and even moreso as it gets to crunch time. Sure, the .49/lb turkey may be featured the week of Thanksgiving, but only go after it then if it's the last item on your list (and then good luck thawing it in time :) ).

Riverbend turkeys have been .45 lb. at my local Walmart since last Saturday (they were .92 lb the day before - I've been watching for the price to drop). I picked one up early yesterday morning. They had two freezer cases filled with them. I've been getting better deals on other stuff for my meal at the local grocery store by using coupons with their sale flyer.

Sorry to hear your bad turkey experience last year...we bought 3 and all of them were simply delicious!

My brother just called and told me the Walmart near him (Stuart, FL) has 58 cents a pound but it might be YMMV. I'll have to check mine later.

I bought a cheapo from our local grocery last year and it wasn't very good either. I was definitely disappointed and now I need to decide where/what brand to buy this year. I want a nummy thanksgiving turkey this year! LOL

I've had bad meat experiences t WM too.

If you are in the south, Publix has their Publix young frozen turkey (10 - 24 lbs) for 59c per pound. I grabbed a 20 pounder for Thanksgiving and a 10 pounder to feed the freezer for when we are wanting a turkey in February.

If I had more room, I'd buy more!

jacksonville florida publix is 59 cents a pound for their brand. I bought both butterball and publix last year and i nor could our guests tell the difference. Also i just read that winndixie will have turkeys for 39 a pound but i have never tried their turkey.

I have never had a bad turkey from any brand, i guess it depends how you cook it and what your tastes are. There were a few years that we had butchered our own wild turkeys for the freezer and didnt buy any from the store and they take some prepping to get them to come out just right. When you are out of work you don't get picky.
