Anyone ever done the elf on a shelf story/tradition? I read about it last year, but it was really close to Christmas so I decided to do it this year with my kids. I ordered some really cute stuffed elves (a boy and a girl). I did not think to look for the whole set. Now I can not find the book anywhere. Amazon and Borders both sell the books in a set with the stuffed elf, but I don't need the elf now. I just want the book. Anyone know where I can get it, or at least get the instructions for this? I want to get it done soon so that I can let the kids get started on it.

Hallmark stores sell it.

I got our Elf On A Shelf back in 2007 and ordered directly from the company that makes them. I too, waited until last minute and paid a bit more to get it shipped to have it before Christmas and it came in a really nice box with the elf and book. My dd starts talking about "Buddy" (our elf) before Thanksgiving and I put him up on the shelf the day after Thanksgiving and move him each night after she goes to bed so he is in a different spot the next day. He is so well loved here!!! It is a great idea!!!

I did find one at hallmark today. Thanks everyone. It was the last one there. The clerk said they are selling as fast as they get them.

About the only way to do that is to try and snag a coupon from either Hallmark, Borders or Barnes & Noble. No one really discounts them - even after Christmas - they are rarely put in the Christmas clearance.

So yesterday I took the two stuffed elves that I bought on Amazon, and the elf on the shelf gift set and put it all in a box on the front porch for the kids. They found it and thought it was mailed to them (I put their names on the package like it was mailed). We read the story last night and they each (the three little ones) got to pick an elf to call their own. Last night before bed they were so excited to see if their elves would fly away. So they said good night. This morning my DS3 woke me up at 6:30 cause he wanted to go see if his elf came back. It was so cute. I got him to wait until it was time to get the other kids up for school. Then we came downstairs to "find" their elves. They were so excited. I am so glad we did this.

Now I am curious to see if this excitement will last through Christmas.

You don't really need the book set to start this tradition. I read about it online 3 years ago and our elves now come every year. All we started with was a letter from Santa, telling us they were coming. It said that the children won a contest and the elves were coming to learn more about children since there aren't any at the North pole. The next week, the elves were in the fireplace. We constructed a passport, but it got to be too much trouble to keep up with, so we dropped that. Each night they go to sleep with the kids, but in the morning they are found somewhere else, sometimes in the middle of playful hijinks.

I read about it on Magical holiday home... but we've even gone so far as to make facebook pages for our elves to communicate with Santa. They often leave notes on our big whiteboard for the kids...sometimes Clean up your room, I tripped in there! and sometimes, today is a good day for Christmas carols, sing loud!

One of our elves is a peeker and unwrapped a gift that was under the tree. They even stole the car one night and came home with happy meals which gave them tummy aches.

It's really kept our season magical.

I ordered "Charlie" a few weeks ago...got it for $17.xx, with a 30% off coupon from Borders.com (book with elf)...and it has worked wonders for us! My dh wants to know why he couldn't think of that...I told him he can come up with whatever will work for the kids to behave the OTHER 11 months of the year, LOL!

The only complaint I have is taht I am not getting much sleep since the elves have arrived. LOL!! Today is Saturday, no school. My kids woke me up at 6am cause they wanted to go see where their elves were.

I am glad you posted this. I had never heard of it before but I looked it up and it is such a cute and neat idea for the kids! I went to barnes and noble this afternoon and bought the set for $23 and some change. I love the idea!!!!!

ETA: There was a 25% off coupon that the girl behind the register had if you were using a MC.
