When a store can clearance an item that sold for $20 down to $3 (and less).. yeah they do have high mark ups.. I use to work in retail. Take Target for example (no, I didn't work there), they start their clearance at 10% off then go all the way down to 90%.. they aren't going to take a full loss when they mark to 90%. What they don't sell, they donate to Goodwill as a write off too.. If they can drop to 90% to get it out of the store, you know they can drop to 50% off for a BF special... and still make a nice profit by selling a higher quantity than say dropping 25% and selling less. No, I don't have actual numbers but logically speaking, when any store has their clearance, they aren't giving things away, they are still making a profit. It just isn't as much. So if you look at the entire picture, sales are down, retail is hurting, how do you bring it up. You lower your profit margin but increase your sales volume and you can just come out ahead. The logic here would save retail.. and the all the big Auto Company's.. The way the economy is, people just are not purchasing the way they were. Therefore the retailer must change something to survive. Many stores are going under. The 3 big Auto Co's want us to bail them out.. but they don't want to shrink their profit margin. The way they are going, they aren't going to have any profits.

The one in Sears for $50 would only be the player. Thanks for the heads up though.. The one in Sams sounds like the one I was looking at on HSN. The one there had the ability to copy my home VHS onto DVD's. That was one of the things that caught my eye too.. I like that feature That is what I am looking for. I have tons of VHS, pre-recorded as well as home videos that I would love to convert. I still have 2 working VCR's in my house, plus 3 DVD players. However, when the VCR's go, I don't want to have to purchase new ones. I want the combo so I can convert.. it would be cheaper in the long run for me to do it than have it done elsewhere. I even want to say it was a JVC on HSN... I know it was $199
-
I have seen deals for DVD/VCR combo's, and see plenty of them in all of the stores, I just am not seeing any BF deals on DVD/VCR recording combo's... You can still get recording VCR's... it seems the hard thing to get is the combo where the DVD can record as well as the VCR. As far as "round tables" do you mean turntables? I have seen them in stores as well.. in fact, one of the stores, maybe Target (so it would not be a great turntable) has one for BF.. if not Target, one of them do.. I do understand they are starting to go the way of the 8-track, but they can still be purchased in many stores.. at least here in SW FL...

Why has it reached the point to not have a huge markdown on electronics? Our economy stinks, our unemployment rate is skyrocketing. If the retailers really want to have a Black Friday & not just an average day, they should have some steep discounts to really sell, not just bring out onlookers. There are many that cannot afford what they were able to 4+ years ago, the logic would be to drop the price to sell to those people. Many are going into forclosure. Why on earth would they be purchasing high priced electronics. Many are also just struggling to get by.. they need some incentive to purchase, not just 10-20% off. You may as well wait for the close out deals and get 40% off when the new model comes out instead of fighting crowds If retail is hurting the way they claim, they would offer the better deals... or are things just completly over priced to begin with.. such as homes were 2 years ago.... Speaking for myself.. I am on a budget, but if there were a really great deal on a big ticket item, even though I did not need it, I am more inclined to purchase it since it is such a great deal. If it is just a sale, I will pass and wait until I really need that item. There are many that shop like that. The retailers have such a large markup.. they can give a better discount. Sometimes the quantity sold will bring in more money than keeping the higher mark up

Unless I am missing them somewhere, I haven't seen anyone with any advertised for BF. Has anyone seen any DVD/VCR Recorder combo's advertised? That is the one thing I really want to get and have not seen any...unless like I said, I am just not seeing them I had seen a nice one on the HSN for $199 about a month ago but figured I would wait until BF.
-
I really thought with the way the economy is, there would be much better deals than there are. By this time last year, I had my list all printed out, my plan in place and folder ready to go. This year, there really isn't any big ticket items I really want. I do plan on hitting the outlet malls for midnight... more to just see what they will have. I may try to get one of the laptops in Wal-mart. I don't really need it, but it is a decent deal. Other than that.. not really to much that I would not get if I waited until 10am to shop.... Like I said, I would have thought we were going to see better deals than what we are...

I go with one of my daugthers. Last year I went with my sister and daughter. This year we are going, my younger daughter, my sister & her daughters.. we are a growing family of BF shoppers... They can't hang with me though.. I go nearly 24 hours.. they can't... I have to break them in Before I started with them, I was a loner...

to me a netbook is just something that can be lost too easy for my daughters. I think I am going to stick with laptops. I was checking out the netbook in Walmart and it is just too small. -
What city will you be this Black Friday? -- NOW WITH MAP! Post #71
amickeyfan replied to ChristmasShopping's topic in 2008
I will be doing as I did last year, spending Thanksgiving in Orlando. I am going to Universal for Turkey Day and shopping in the surrounding area on Black Friday. Actually if the outlet malls are opening up at midnight on Thursday as they did last year, I will be there Thrusday night -
You are not an idiot. I hear what you are saying which is why I questioned it. For the $9.95, you would not have been ripped off. You are paying for what you are getting, or would have been getting since your order was cancelled. For that price, I would have loved a pair in Yellow. I have nearly every color (23 pairs to be exact) of real Crocs and want yellow but can't seem to find them in my size. I refuse to pay $30 for them. Most (not all) of mine have been from Shoebuy.com with their sales. The most I have paid was $25 and that was with shipping.. and they were for Disney ones...
-
I just read the article where it states they were made for JC Penny and they were made by Crocs. So they are a generic brand. Every generic brand is made by a name brand (from food to hard-goods), we now know that JC Penny's is made by the original Croc. That is pretty interesting. Either way, they didn't have my size I don't think I would pay $18-25 for a lower end croc when I could pay that for the real top of the line croc at other places (ie: Shoebuy with a coupon, Costco etc...). I would pay under $10 for them though.

I know when they had the lap-tops I got three. I had my daughter, her boyfriend and myslef there. One was for me, one was for my daughter that was there & the other was for the daughter that was home. I have three children... my son had a lap-top already at that point. So yes, there really are people with 2+ kids getting them.. when they are getting more than one.... is it fair to limit them to only one I understand that they are trying to deter those from buying and reselling, but the way I was able to get my kids theirs, so can the resellers.. they just have someone with them.. if Wal-mart doesn't sell more than one per-person.. and that does make it hard on some.

I have a feeling we are going to see better deals as the time gets closer to Christmas than the BF deals Last year, I had so many places I wanted to be at, I could not make up my mind. This year, there aren't too many. I am not out for that many "door buster" sales. I am still going but I haven't seen anything that I have to wait hours for.. or I should say, I haven't seen anything worth my while to wait hours for.

>>> Official Black Friday DIGITAL CAMERA Discussion Thread <<<
amickeyfan replied to Brad's topic in 2007
I know many here seem to like the Canon A560. that doesn't have the Image Stablization that I want. I was looking over at Amazon and they have this: Canon PowerShot A720IS 8MP Digital Camera with 6x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom $198.98 - Quantity: 1 - In Stock - Eligible for Amazon Prime shipping rates: join now Condition: new with it, I also get a Kingston 2G memory card and if I buy a Canon Printer (which I did find one I liked for $66 ) I will get a $50 rebate... does that sound like a good deal? I want to order by tonight in the event the free memory card isn't there after tonight. My sister ordered the A560 deal with the battery charger pack.. it was back up online today!! I would much rather have the batteries but they don't offer it with this camera... -
Last BF I did get some rain-checks, however, the items did not arrive back into the store until after the RC had expired.

I had a 17" Acer that was just over a year old and it died! Flickered on and off for a few days then went black on me. I paid just as much for my Acer as I did Samsung I think Samsung is a better product. With my family always on the computer, the screen is always on and I know they have a "shelf life". I think my life was cut too short but out of warranty With Samsung, I have a two year and thru Costco, I bring it back to them!
-
I just got a 20 inch wide screen (I know you guys wanted BIGGER) but it's a Samsung and got it in Costco just today (well yesterday) for only $179. I could not wait for the BF deals. My monitor went black and would not work last week!

All I keep hearing on the news is that this is the year for deals... I am not sure where but they sure aren't being advertised! Last year by this time, I had a very long list. This year I have about 5 for sure things and 2 maybe's. If one of them wasn't a computer, I would not bother to go out, I'd go to the theme parks instead (I will be in Orlando with my family, they are going to the parks, I am going shopping).

I wasn't exactly injured but I did sink into the mud past my ankles and just below my calf in Kohl's parking lot at 5:30am, in the dark! I was walking out to my car with a sewing machine & set of Farberware pots in my arms. There were no shopping carts. The boxes were big, bulky and heavy! I couldn't see where I was going, nearly fell over the curb and sunk into the mud I was alone and could not get out at first. I had to lean towards the curb to place the boxes down to make myself lighter then I was able to pull one foot out (with my hands) then get it onto the curb. By doing that, I had some leverage to yank out my other foot I can laugh now but I was really mad. Not mad that I was covered in mud, mad that I wasted time that should have been spend on the road getting to Target :gdlol:
