  1. The deals are great, but sadly, we don't really need/want anything in my house more than what we have.

I made this thread to get ideas if there's something worth my time: http://forums.gottadeal.com/showthread.php?t=3576

From that, the hard drive deal doesn't excite me because we have enough hard disk space. No need/want for memory since I'm not playing as many games as I used to (my focuses have changed now :)). We have a hundred pack of DVD-R's we bought online once and we're about half way through them, so still plenty left.

I had plans to go with a friend late at night and get the best of the deals, but I don't need or really want anything.

    Is there something I'm missing?

  2. I know you didn't come here asking for advice, but I'd stick with textbooks

First, it's just the raw difference between a computer and a book. Flip the pages, smell the book, it's real. Keep pressing enter and starting at a screen is completely different.

Next, if he ever has a problem with the computer, the same will go for his access to text books. You said they're on a CD so he could get on another computer, which could work, but personally I wouldn't waste time having to get a computer fixed.

Another reason is work efficiency, when you're on the computer it's way too easy to get distracted. If he sits alone in a room without a computer, tv, phone, etc. he'll be able to study MUCH better than having internet access.

Last, at this age in 99% of cases, this computer would be used more for games than anything else. At least that's how I see it, but he may be part of that less than 1% where he wouldn't.

What if it gets stolen in school? Not everyone will have a laptop to use so someone will feel jealous.

If I had the choice right now, I'd like to stick with text books. If carrying 6 books is a problem, see if the book store at his school will let you pay twice the book rental fees (Only $10 or something per semester per book) so you can have a set to keep at home. This way he won't have to carry as much. I'm actually considering contacting my book store to do this just to make everyday a little easier

    :)

By the way, I'm 16 and a junior in high school. I have a computer in my room where I study, which does distract me, but I'm getting better at studying and not getting distracted. I can understand why many people I know are failing in HS just because of their enviroment where they work. If you have any questions, feel free to PM me, I'll give you completely honest answers :)

  3. What I would do is looking for a good deal on a normal 60-80GB drive from a local store and then order one of these enclosures for it, making it an external hard drive:

The 3rd and 4th ones are the same, except 4th one has firewire. Personally, I'd stick with Vantec because they are a brand name, but the first two shouldn't be bad.

I don't know if you've ever shopped at newegg.com before, but they are very reliable and have excellent customer service. You shouldn't have any problems with them if you want a refund/exchange/etc. for any reason.

  4. You both are doing an awesome job with advertising this site

You guys show that advertising isn't necessarily about money you spend and the Black Friday thing you guys are doing is an awesome idea, tons of people visiting :smart:

Nice job on the site! :)

  5. if i am buying a HD right now i would buy a Seagate, mostly because of it's 5 years warranty.

As far as I know, not all of their models have a 5 year warranty.

For the most part, pick from Seagate, Maxtor, or Western Digital. I haven't ever used a Samsung drive unless it's in the laptop or tablet pc I have at home.

Those first three brands are the major players in the HD market and honestly how long they last really depends on the batch and on how you use them. If you keep your system on as much as possible with very few reboots, it will last longer. The more often you turn your system on or off, the lower it's life.

It's like if you turn your car on and off 10 times within a short period of time, versus just leaving it on the whole time. You might save a little gas, but the life of it will be lower.

  6. The 1600x1200 is down around the 5% range.

I'd love to be able to design this site for strictly 2001fp users :)

I may in the future do something just for 1600x1200 resolution or higher - maybe just an alternate front page for the site or something...

If you organize your pages correctly with CSS and PHP includes or however you manage your content, it can be done without too much work. From a point of view of designing things, I prefer to just have one resolution I design for. Right now when I do any design, I design for 1024x768 keeping in mind it should still look decent on 800x600

  7. I reccomend Idologic, and you really do get what you pay for

If you're interested, I can sell you a portion of my account for a portion of the price :)

This way you can have the quality hosting of an Idologic account with the lower pricing since you just need about 500mb. If you're interested, send me a PM, maybe we can work something out.

    :)

  8. Ok, now I have to convince my dad he won't lose much if anything in the worst case scenario

Let's say that we buy this system and it arrives. We put up the monitors on ebay (2001FP) and we don't get an amount we want for them, in order us to come close to breaking even. We can then return these to Dell, right?

I guess all we'd eat would be the listing fees from ebay and shipping back to Dell, right?
