edmicman Posted June 21, 2005 Posted June 21, 2005 So I configured a 6000 that came out to $1571...how do I know if it gets the whole $750 off or not? How does "up to 750" work?
Brad Posted June 21, 2005 Posted June 21, 2005 You'll get the full $750. Don't know why Dell says "up to"
Dud Posted June 21, 2005 Posted June 21, 2005 I don't know why I am surprised. I got my wife REALLY excited last night configuring a 6000 for her. The unit had just about everything, 1.6 Pentium M, 60 GB HD, X300 graphics, CD/DVD burner, etc. The price was about $1,510. Well, this morning we get on to BUY and find that Dell has kept the same prices we saw last night yet they really downgraded the hardware configurations. Last night the price for the above config was about $1,510 (before coupon). This morning the configuration has changed BADLY. For that price you get a Celeron M 1.5 GHZ and integrated graphics. What is Dell thinking? I guess they think we are all idiots ...

Dud Posted June 21, 2005 Posted June 21, 2005 No, I don't think Dell would have honored it at the time of the "deal". I assumed (that'l teach me) that I would be able to get that config for that price since I did it before. This is the first time I remember Dell radically changing configs prior to and during a sale.
cronos Posted June 21, 2005 Posted June 21, 2005 i just noticed that even the Dimension can be a good deal because you can configure it with 'no monitor'.
cronos Posted June 21, 2005 Posted June 21, 2005 i'm literally drooling right now after configuring my Dimension. i don't think i'm going to be able to justify the purchase though
RossMAN Posted June 21, 2005 Posted June 21, 2005 i'm literally drooling right now after configuring my Dimension. i don't think i'm going to be able to justify the purchase though It's a good deal if you already planned on getting the warranty. I would not buy a flat panel LCD with the PC. Buying separately from Dell E&A using a coupon is usually cheaper.
edmicman Posted June 21, 2005 Posted June 21, 2005 Hmmmmm....844 for a shipped 6000...down from 1571....pretty good, but my gf says she doesn't *need* a new computer right now, and there will probably be other deals like this in the future, right?

RossMAN Posted June 21, 2005 Posted June 21, 2005 how does DPA works? do you know what kind of interest rate Dell is charging for it?I'm not sure as I've never used it. As long as there is a 30, 60 or 90 days "same as cash" you should be able to make a payment and avoid paying any interest. Plus you get a nice 2% discount

RossMAN Posted June 21, 2005 Posted June 21, 2005 saxguy, Which model, specs and price are you looking at?

RossMAN Posted June 21, 2005 Posted June 21, 2005 That is a nicely loaded machine but the hard drive is small and I would consider upgrading to the 2 year warranty. Is there a reason you're buying 1GB RAM instead of the minimum 256MB? If you get 256MB that will save you $150 (use that towards a larger hard drive and better warranty). Buy 1GB for $126.86 from Crucial.com or $104.47 from NewEgg.com RAM is super easy to install.
RossMAN Posted June 21, 2005 Posted June 21, 2005 how many empty bay available for the 4700?According to the tech specs there are 4 available DIMM slots which can accomodate up to 2GB RAM.

RossMAN Posted June 21, 2005 Posted June 21, 2005 i guess i was just assuming that it's cheaper to get the RAM directly from Dell.Nope, it's usually the opposite. Dell +$150 you get 1GB RAM totalCrucial.com +$126 you get 1.25GB RAM total $24 less and 256MB RAM more :)
jonottawa Posted June 22, 2005 Posted June 22, 2005 Could an administrator confirm what was mentioned upthread ... namely that if you store a configuration in your shopping cart that Dell will honor it even when they try to sabotage big coupon bonanzas. Also, aside from RAM, what other components are you generally better off not buying from Dell?
RossMAN Posted June 22, 2005 Posted June 22, 2005 Could an administrator confirm what was mentioned upthread ... namely that if you store a configuration in your shopping cart that Dell will honor it even when they try to sabotage big coupon bonanzas. I've heard your cart is saved up to 24 hours but I have never tried that myself. Also, aside from RAM, what other components are you generally better off not buying from Dell? RAM and Hard Drive are the most critical. A few other peripherals are:Video cardWireless networkingOptical drive I would at least get the minimal amount of RAM and perhaps a small hard drive. There's also wireless networking (which is cheaper elsewhere)
cronos Posted June 22, 2005 Posted June 22, 2005 I've heard your cart is saved up to 24 hours but I have never tried that myself.my cart above is still there after almost 24 hours. the price though, has changed from $761 to $791
i-bystander Posted June 22, 2005 Posted June 22, 2005 Could an administrator confirm what was mentioned upthread ... namely that if you store a configuration in your shopping cart that Dell will honor it even when they try to sabotage big coupon bonanzas. I'm not an admin, but I'll try to address your question. Usually, it's the price that changes based on your configuration, not the actual parts that you've picked out. I've had stored configs in my wish list for weeks at a time, and I don't think I've seen the specs change - prices yes, specs no. Having said that and I'm proved wrong, and it is indeed only stored for 24 hours, it still would have served OP some good had he saved his original config, since he went back the next morning intending to buy it.
RossMAN Posted June 22, 2005 Posted June 22, 2005 my cart above is still there after almost 24 hours. the price though, has changed from $761 to $791 So I guess while the cart contents remain, the price isn't guaranteed to remain fixed. It will fluctuate.
Aaron Posted June 22, 2005 Posted June 22, 2005 my cart above is still there after almost 24 hours. the price though, has changed from $761 to $791 I'm sorry man, that sucks.
jonottawa Posted June 23, 2005 Posted June 23, 2005 Thanks all for the info. And I guess those special Dell 'codes' make it a moot point whether you can save your shopping cart or not, since it would have a different code, right? I think that if this deal didn't suck it wouldn't still be active. Oh well, probably for the best. I'm not 'scheduled' to buy a new system until November and I'd hate to be sorely tempted by a fantastic deal.
