mabennett
What's the difference? My 11 year old son wants an IPOD touch for his bday. I'm thinking this is way too much money to spend for a "radio". Someone listed an mp4 player on GD for about 80$. That's more to my liking. Am I missing something because the IPOD touch just seems like a fancy looking mp3 player. Thanks for filling me in on this>>>>>:)
speeddiva
The IPod doesn't have a radio but you can download apps to play some stations. The Touch is also WiFi so you can surf the internet on it when you can find a signal. Using the WiFi you can also download songs straight into it from Itunes. It's a nifty gadget and I love mine, but I'd never spend the money on one for an 11 y/o.
GinaInIL
I actually just had this same battle with myself and did lots of research. I went to several different electronics stores in my area and spoke with my sister-in-law (who happens to work in this department at one of the stores). Each rep told me that I should go with the plain old MP3 player vs. the IPOD. I ended up with the Sansa Fuze 8GB MP3 player. I absolutely love it. Here are some of the things that the Sansa Fuze and Other MP3 players offer that the IPOD doesn't. The MP3 player has built in FM radio, for IPOD you have to purchase a seperate device (around $50). The Fuze has expandable memory. This means that if you run out of room, you can pop a microSD card into the side of the unit and have lots more memory. Its relatively inexpensive to buy those cards. IPOD is not expandable. You get what you buy in the beginning and thats it. You can download songs to your MP3 player from pretty much any music website, you have to use Itunes to get songs on your IPOD. At 99 cents a song it can get pricey. The MP3 player also has a built in voice recorder. It may not matter to some people, but it is a perk. Basically they work the same way. In my opinion (and the reps at the stores) you are paying for the name. I think the MP3 player is a much better choice, however, I am sure there are plenty of IPOD users out there that disagree. I have a rather expansive music collection and take this with me everywhere, I couldn't be happier. Hope this helps!
mamapenguin
I love my ipod touch. I would not buy one for an 11 YO, I would by a Zune though. That is what I bought for my 13 YO & she loves it. The Zune has a radio built in.
heatherbade
There is NO comparing and an Ipod touch to an mp3. I would never buy another mp3. On the touch you can do soooo many different things. It is def. worth the cost. we bought our 12 y/o son this for Christmas and he LOVESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS it. It is alot of money, but you can go online, play games, watch movies, etc. The list goes on and on. It is a great investment. Seriously think about getting this for him if you can afford it. You won't be sorry.

racerfan
I got my DSD13 an Ipod touch for Xmas. He loves it. It goes everywhere with it. I also got my DD10 a Zune for Xmas. She loves that. Yes the touch is expensive, I would not give that to my 10yr old but the 13yr is very responsible. When DD is 13 she may get one also. So far the Zune is perfect for her. littlesdcen
My ds10 got one for Christmas and loves it. He loves the games and the music also the web surfing. He uses many other apps too. It really depends what they want it for. If it is just the music sure any mp3 should work. But if they want to really use all the features the Ipod touch is awesome. I love it too. elena_398
The IPod touch is the only thing my son (15 by christmas) wants. Glad to hear you guys love yours. Im just hoping it goes down a bit. The cheapest I saw was 227.xx at Walmart. Yikes. I will get it for him though. He rarely asks for anything specific.
mabennett
My son and I keep going round and round on this issue. I told him to convince me of the IPOD but all the things he says are things that can be done on his PSP i think. Can a PSP do some of the things an PSP can?? I want to buy the sansa 8 gb, but if the PSP can do some of these things, I'd rather do that. Any suggestions on the PSP????
nat1jen
The ipod touch is not a radio. My daughter got the touch for Christmas and loves it. She went from the nano to the touch, and she doesn't ever want to go back to the nano. Is your 11 year old responsible? If so, I say go for the touch. It's what my 11 year old wants for her birthday or Christmas this year.

The psp can play movies, download pics, go online, play games, download mp3's. IPOD touch can play games, go online, listen to music, movies. Better quality is the ipod touch. Sony is very difficult to deal with when you have a problem with their products. If your child is responsible, go for the touch. Check out the websites for both of these before sending tons of money on both.
AndreaInNC
I was at the Ipod online store yesterday and they had some refurbished Ipod touch models. I haven't priced them online - but I do know that Best Buy will run specials online and not in store. for instance - 8GB 1st generation Ipod Touch for $159.00http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/specialdeals/ipod?mco=MTE3Njc
jason3kgt
the touch might be a stretch for an 11 year old. The screens love to shatter at seemingly soft drops on the ground. I would recommend the 30gb zune, it's a solid mp3 player with built in radio tuner and tough as nails. they were on sale at woot.com for $80 a few days ago. i'm sure you could find one on amazon for a similar price. Gloey
Man you guys make me feel terrible...my 6 1/2 yo GD wants one and I've seriously been considering it. I would buy the warranty for it however. What to do! I know she would love to get on the internet with it.
