ObiRich
Depends on what capabilites you want and your budget. I have a really nice little Philips setup. Bought it a couple years ago. It has a single, upconverting DVD player, AM/FM tuner, and a USB port (great for using a flash drive). It also plays Divx files. 100 watts per channel. Paid less than $200 for it at BestBuy. That's on the lower end of the price scale. You can end up paying $1000+ depending on what you really go for. One thing you might want to think about is getting it with BluRay capability, since it will play both those and regular DVDs. BluRay is the "wave of the future." hpowers
We love our Bose also. Go to one of their outlet stores and check them out. Even when old videos are playing I hear sounds I've never heard before.
littlesdcen
We have a bose system too. We went through so many sony, magnavox, phillips,Harmon Kardon, until I finally talked Dh into a bose that was 5 years ago and we have been thrilled with it. Cassy
We have a Bose that we are really happy with too. It has been our first surround sound so sorry, but I can't compare it to anything, but we do like it. :)
rachealb
We have a Panasonic with wireless rear speakers that we really like a lot - I think it was about $300-400? Holds five discs, but the wireless rear speakers was the selling point for us (by wireless I mean it has a little box that you plug the two rear speakers into so that you dont have to run speaker wire all the way from behind the unit)
mscott22
Thanks so much for the replys. My hubby wants a Bose but not sure if we can afford that. Also what model would anyone suggest for a Bose?
Marcster
I would look for a surround sound system that has HDMI connections. Though my setup doesn't have HDMI, I can really see how it cuts down on the amount of cords running around (each connection that used to be one cable for video and left/right audio or 3 cables for video and left/right for audio, would be replaced with just one single HDMI cable). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hdmi Any TV, DVD player, etc. that you buy in the future will have HDMI connections (in addition to legacy ports), and HDMI is judged to be the best connector right now.
