What do I look for (dishwasher)

Recommended Posts

We are currently remodeling our kitchen, complete renovation it was stripped to wall studs!! We are going out this weekend to get all of the new appliances we need (dishwasher, over the range microwave and garbage disposal) Currently we have a stainless steel fridge and stove so we want the dishwasher to be stainless also but what features do I need to look for?

I don't have a clue where to start other than just looks...Any features or things I need to look out for? Do you love/hate your dishwasher??

TIA for any ideas :)

I moved into my new house last July. We had to purchase all the appliances after the house was built. I got the Fisher Paykel 2 drawer dishwasher thru Lowes. I love it. Many times in my old house I used to have the dirty dishes sit in the dishwasher until I had a full load. Now because I have the 2 drawers I can do 2 smaller loads (not that small because each drawer holds quite a bit) together or I can just wash one drawer at a time when I need. I think Kenmore also has the drawer system. It is like having 2 dishwashers in the house. If you combine both drawers it comes out bigger than one regular dishwasher.

Have fun shopping.

Stainless interior! I cannot believe how many plastic pieces have broken off my Maytag and ended up in the disposal in the bottom crunching away. It doesn't sound good and cannot be good on my dishwasher. Even the silverware basket has a hole in it! Stainless is what we are looking for next, interior that is!

We have a stainless steel Frigidaire that we got that was on clearance at Sears, so I didn't have options to choose from. I like it a lot. The only thing I want to change in my next one is getting one where the silverware container is in the door--giving me that much more room with my 2 drawers. I will not budge on that one, as with 3 kids, we go through a lot of dishes.

The only feature I miss about a previous dishwasher that I don't have on this one is the delay start.

I used that feature more than I actually thought I would.

I can't live without the delay. I just thought they all had one. We always use the delay, as I'm usually doing laundry in the evening, and I try not to do run the dishwasher at the same time (we're on a well). If we don't set the delay, dd14 will forget to go and start it later--and we'll wake up to dirty dishes...

I just brought a new dishwasher about a month ago. Our old one had the motor rust to the point where it won't work. I had the repair guy out to look at it and he said to just replace it. I asked him when he was here what his opinions were. He suggested either a Maytag or a whirlpool/Kenmore. When I reviewed the comments online about the brands, I found that Maytag had more issues for repair. He said not to get Bosch because the parts and the units are hard to replace.

I ended up going to Lowe's (get installation and they take the old one) because they price match. I brought a Whirlpool. It has delay start, whisper quiet noise function, energy star rated, sani-rinse (I'm big on this), the silverware is in the door, the top and bottom rack adjust up or down to make room for larger items, and it had fold down covers for part of the silverware container to trap small objects. I love it!!! It doesn't have a stainless steel tub, but the model up from it does. I just couldn't see playing $200 more for it. They also had a deal that I am not sure if it is still available that you got an even larger discount when buying one or two additional whirlpool applicances. If you are interested in the exact model I can find my folder with everything. Just let me know. Oh, and yes it comes in stainless steel exterior or white.

Good Luck!

I would also suggest checking to make sure that it has enough sprayers. I like the ones with sprayers on the bottom, top and in the middle for better water distribution. My previous one only had two sprayers...one top and one bottom and it didn't clean as well as this one.

You probably bought one at this point but I feel the need to put my input in, too ;)

We bought a Whirlpool too. We have had a Kenmore Elite before and was quite pleased with it. BUT we had a lot of bad experiences with Sears so we buy appliances elsewhere now.

We bought our Whirlpool Gold at Best Buy. They take off the delivery fee in the store; no mail in rebate required. They will haul away your old appliance, too. I like the 18 months 0%/0 payments finacing they offered. I liked getting reward zone $$ back, too. I think it was only $5 or $10, but it's enough to pay for part of a CD or game :)

We needed a stainless steel one, too. We wanted a dishwasher that had a "top rack" or "glasses" cycle. (We use A LOT of cups in the summer, more than we should...) We wanted an adjustable top shelf so we could stick our bigger classes and mixing bowls on top. We wanted a TALL TUB dishwasher. VERY important to us. We replaced a perfectly good working dishwasher in this house but it just couldn't fit the pyrex bowls I used for mixing on the bottom and wash the cups on top.

It had to have a minimum of Quiet Partner III rating. It had to be Energy Star rated. (most of them are now anyways)

I like the delay cycle, too. I mostly use it when I need to do the wash at the same time LOL.

My mom liked my dishwasher so much that she went to the store and ending up buying the same model.

The biggest complaint we both have is the silverware basket is WAY too small. It's nice to be able to choose to put it on the door instead of in the bottom row, but it needs to hold another 15 forks/spoons to be match the amount of plates and cups this one holds.

Other features I wish I had would be a hard food dispenser, power scouring features, and stainless steel interior.

Bosch are suppose to be the best, if you can afford them. Top of the line Kenmores are really good, too.
