Ok, the viewable area on the 17" lcd should be equivalent to a 19" crt right?

It's close to the viewable area of a 19", but I believe that it's slightly less. Samsung makes really nice displays, I don't think you would be disappointed in it at all.

Yep more like 18.5" but Samsung makes great displays and this has DVI, which most cheaper models lack.
