Electric Hot Water Heater

Recommended Posts

Our 12 yr. old hot water heater started leaking out of the top. Does anyone know of any deals on an electric hot water heater? We had a 40 gallon but want to get a 50-55 gallon. Couldn't find much in a search. Thinking about the Kenmore Power Miser 6, 55 gallon at Sears for $230. Anyone know of any deals or discounts for Sears or anywhere for that matter on one? I know a lot of people on here don't like Sears. All of our appliances are Kenmore and we haven't really had any problems w/Sears.

I am not one of those people....I love all of my Kenmore appliances and have had great luck with them. I have received a few deals from Sears lately for 10% off if using my Sears card. Since you can't wait to buy a hot water heater and they currently aren't running that promotion, I would print one of those 10% off coupons from Lowes or Home Depot (look on Ebay) and ask them if they would match it. I think they would be willing to come down the 10%.

As for capacity, something that is more important is the FHR or First Hour Rating. It is more important than capacity since it tells you how much hot water the heater can put out in one hour of use. Also don't forget the warranty aspect. You can find water heaters with 12 year warranties that don't cost much more than ones with shorter warranties.

Good luck!

Thanks for the idea about possible coupon matching, never know unless I try. :) We did look at the FHR specs so we are aware of that info. The specs and Energy guide on the 55 gallon is the same as our old 40 gallon. The warranty is only 6 yr. but the model that has a 12yr. warranty had a lot of bad reviews about bottom element fires. Definately don't need that.

Well we didn't end up getting the Kenmore at Sears. They were out of stock at the closest location and the other location is about 15 miles away which wouldn't of been that big of a deal if we hadn't gotten over 10" of snow today.:eyepoppin Roads were at a standstill from all of the wrecks and jack-knifed semis. So Dh stopped at Lowes and ended up getting a 50 gallon Whirlpool for $440. He kept saying "but it has a lifetime warranty", lol. Guess it has a bunch of other features and such but I still think it was kind of silly mainly b/c I have been wanting to move and I said we don't need a lifetime warranty. So he said we'll take it w/us when we move, lol. Oh well, at least I will have hot water tonight.

Wow, from $230 to $440?!? He must've wanted the hot water more than you!

lol... Well he knew he had to buy one today and get it installed. He left work early to get it all done. We picked out the one from Sears after looking online at Home Depot and Lowes. The Kenmore model was so much cheaper for basically the same specs. Since we couldn't get to Sears today b/c of the road conditions he just went ahead and got the Whirlpool. It's only money, right? lol This is one of the reasons why I am always looking for the best deals b/c Dh can be careless sometimes w/money. Other times he is the biggest tightwad around.

If you haven't installed it, you may want to rethink this purchase. My friend has a Whirlpool WH she bought for her house. There was a recall on it, Lowe's won't stand by it since it's over a year old and there is another problem yet to be resolved.

Of course I don't know if it's the exact same model but it was a Whirlpool from Lowe's in that price range. After hearing her wows, I would be very hesitant with any Whirlpool WH.

I don't mean to be the bearer of bad news but better to find out now than later.

Thank you for the info. I did a search and didn't find a recall on our model. I did read some pretty bad reviews though and now am wondering if Dh should of tried to get to Sears. :( He has already installed it so I guess it's too late. Can't believe that a lot of people were having problems after only a couple years when it has a lifetime warranty. We bought model # EE3Z50RD055V. Guess I'll have to keep my fingers crossed on this one and of course let Dh know he might of screwed up, lol.

At least you can find some consolation in telling him he screwed up. :D

I didn't want to be a naysayer but my friends recently went a week without hot water because of the problems with the WH and waiting for the parts from Whirlpool. That would be hard on anyone.

Maybe call Lowe's to see if they will return it. Couldn't hurt to ask. If nothing else, you can let him live with his purchase and remind him for years to come. :yup:

Every manufacturer of hot water heaters has several model numbers and any one can produce a bad batch. One of our hwh was a local hardware stores brand and I was told it was a piece of crap...needless to say it was a 5 yr. model that lasted for over 13 years. I heard horror stories about the Kenmore brand (made by Whirlpool) that I bought a Reliant brand. So far so good. Keep your receipt for the one from Lowe's and pray that it goes on sale in the next week or so. I think they make price adjustments...or shop around, they claim to price match.
