Does anyone know of a good deal on a Cheap Crib and Crib Mattress? I don't want used, and prefer the convertible kind, but could stand the regular kind. TIA!

What is your preferred price range for both as a set, or individual prices?

Where are you localed? I am about to purchase a Baby's Dream Sea Island dresser and they have the crib also. The cribs retail for over $500 and the dresser retails for $750! She is going to sell me the dresser for $150 and I think the crib is going to be sold for $150. She is in Fla. It is an incredible deal and a goreous set. It converts from a crib to a toddler bed and then a full size bed. Here is what it looks like:

The crib won't be used a whole lot, so that I why I don't want to spend a lot on it. The cheapest matreess I have found was $45, and would prefer a crib under $100, if that is even possible.

While the crib won't be used a whole lot, eventually you are going to want to move the baby to a toddler bed, and then a regular bed. Convertible cribs are not exactly cheap, reason being that you get so much use out of them.

I bought DD's at babydepot for $225 and it converts from crib, to toddler bed, to full size bed. I could've gotten a different set for $175, but I was in my nesting stage and hell-bent on getting the perfect crib. ;)

I THINK jcp.com has some cribs on sale right now, also check walmart.com and target.com. Look to see if you have a babydepot in your area (burlington coat factory).

As far as the mattress, $45 is a great price. This is something that you can get used IF it's one of the waterproof and hypoallergenic mattresses. They wipe clean and seem to maintain their firmness. DD has a used mattress and I'll probably resell it when the time comes.

Will it not be used a lot like it is for a grandparents house or something. I would just do a pack and play.. that to me makes the most sense.

Yeah, actually that is a pretty good idea - if it isn't going to be used a lot! The nice thing about this option is that it folds down for storage. You won't need a top of the line one with the changing table and mobile accessories so I bet you could find one for $50-$70.

I would also recommend checking with a local consignment store - they often have cribs that include a mattress for a cheap price. My only recommendation is if you do this to be sure to check the most recent safety regulations to be sure that it meets them. I think the rule of thumb is that a soda can (or the width of a dollar bill) can't fit in between the bars of the crib. (Anyone know the exact measurements?)

Good luck.

I got the expensive convertible crib for my daughter...I regret that now...cost a fortune, was beautiful, but when she started getting older she decided that she didn't like it anymore (it was converted into the toddler bed at the time). SO we got the pink plastic princess toddler bed from Walmart for about $50 and put the crib mattress in it, she loved it! The convertible bed has been in the basement ever since...we even have the rails to convert it into a full bed, but when she got too big for the toddler bed we just moved in a twin sized bed (the full was too big for her room). I regret spending the extra money for the convertible bed. We even sold the toddler bed for about as much as we bought it for! I would get a used crib from craigslist and buy a new mattress for it.

Ok. You all are going to think I am stupid, but what is Craiglist and how do you get it? My baby is 2, and is still going to be in the crib for a little while, which is why I want the convertible kind. It is for the grandparent's house, so it will be used a few times a month.

Our Dd and my two nephews went to my parents house every weekend,(Mom was sick and we were helping out) and a least one night a week. We never put up a crip there. We used the pack n play--it was a lifesaver. And we did this until we lost Mom, the youngest was 4 then, so it got a lot of use! I'd check the Target clearance for a pack n play, but if you reallly want the crib, I'd check Target or a local Childern's consigment (try Childern's Orchard) they ususally have them.

Did they not try to climb out?

Nope, they never tried, and my DD was trying to climb out of her crib pretty young. My oldest nephew balked at getting in (big boy stage) so for a while we just let him "camp out" on bath towels on sleep mats (like those used at preschools), It really made the situation very managable.
