If you plan on making legal backups of the DVDs you own, there is nothing better than DVDShrink.

If you want to archive an entire DVD, without compression. Nothing beats DVD Decrypter.

Are these freeware or commercial apps?

We have DVD wizard pro. We are trying to make backup copys of our DVD collection with it but have run into a problem. It dycripts the DVD fine but for some reason the DVDs we burn can only be played back on the computer they don't work in our DVD player. Not sure what we are doing wrong. Any thoughts on that problem?

We tried DVD dycriptor and DVD shrinks and couldn't seem to figure out how to make a DVD copy that would play in the DVD player with that either. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

Dvddecrypter and DVDshrink are both freeware and very good at backing up dvds. I use both and both are great.

It really is quite easy to make backups using either software. I could be either the media that was used or your player is just picky. I've never had any problems using dvddecrypter or dvdshrink.

This is dependant on your set top player.

What type of media are you using? In general, DVD-R has the greatest compatibility. If you are using +R now, try a -R. If you are using -R, try a +R. Also, if you have a friend that can test it in their player, that will help confirm if your disks are good.

Most newer DVD players will play anything you throw at them. We picked up a $30 no name DVD player over the summer and it plays everything.

Well we have a DVD recorder and the ones burned on the computer won't play in that. We have a Sony DVD player and they won't play in that. We also have a XBOX and they won't play in that grrrrrrr. If there some sort of last step to finalize the disk were missing or something? They play just fine on the computer just not in any 3 of our DVD players. Were using DVD +R figured that should work since our DVD recorder only records on DVD +R not on DVD -R. Were kinda clueless. We have been using a external DVD recorder we use with our laptop. Picked up this new one as a internal duel layer for out desktop. Thanks again

Well, try a -R disk in the new one, and let us know how it goes.

Meritline actually sells DVD samplers. Basically, you get two disks in a DVD case to try out. I suggest Ritek as they are well known to be a quality media.

Meritline DVD samplers $3.75 with free shipping

Try here for some guides on backing up and burning. This is where I go. If your dvd player is listed here you can find out what your dvd player can play. I've used 100's of Ritek/Ridata +R's and have never had a problem. I currently have 300 Fujifilm +R's, actually made by Taiyo Yuden which is considered by many to be one of the best, that I bought at Bestbuy when they were on sale. You can search media here.
