BellaVita
I need an external hard drive. I looked at the ads and almost all places are sellingg them bf but whats the best brand/deal?
nirvana4all
the best deal is only buying however much you will fill up and use before it is outlived. Brand name I trust is WD. Cant speak positive or negative about the others
jade6700
We use WD here. We have two and they have never given us any trouble. If I were in need of one again this year I'd buy the WD that BB has on sale on BF.
flyjar
WD and Seagate are the best. I've been looking for one as well. I really want one with firewire though. The deals have been okay, nothing great.

d2p
Think of it as a bigger closet. You can either throw out shoes, or get more closet space.:)
freesia39
think of it as a big portable closet. if you have family movies or pictures you want to share, load it on the external HD, go to someone's house, plug it in, and boom. it's helpful for those who have laptops which come with semi limited HD space.. or for those who want mobile HD space or don't want to open up their computers to drop another HD in. nirvana4all
On one I use it as 1/2 backup (safety net) and 1/2 extra storage (portable closet)
lynanddann
WD is good and at Targets BF sale it is $87 for a 500gb unit
vafromtx
It's possible that the external hard drive is unecessary for some folks since they still have enough floppies to use instead.
left210
What is the difference between the one at Target and Best Buy? They are both 500GB and by Western Digital but they look different and the one at Best BUy is the My Book Essential? Does that include other features or something? magicalorange
Can external hard drives also be used for games or do you need an internal hard drive for them? I may get a laptop and I'm not sure if I should buy a relatively cheap laptop and add on a few things at a time when I get the money or wait until I have enough money to get the computer with eveything I need. If they are less intensive (sims, monopoly, etc) then internal or external will be fine.

Do you only have to plug in the external hard drive when you are accessing something in it or do you always have to turn it on? I'm used to everything already in the computer so I'm not familar when things are external.
stckciv
It is basically there to save your info, so plug it in and DL items you want saved and then unplug it from your computer. I have to buy one this year because I am worried I will loose over 2000 songs and THOUSANDS of pictures that are saved to my hard drive. Those things I cant get back!
