nat1jen
Well, I took the plunge and bought the D17 Dyson at Linens N Things. They let me use my expired 25% coupon at the store. I also buy Scrip gift cards through my daughter's soccer team that earns money in her soccer account. LNT was offering 10% on the Scrip gift cards, so I saved another 10% (after the 25% coupon) by using the gift cards. I am very pleased. I have to say that the Dyson is unbelievable. I really did love my Oreck and was reluctant to change brands. With 3 dogs in the house, we have an unbelievable amount of dust and dog hair. Some of the carpets look like they have just been professionally cleaned after using the Oreck. I have used it now 2 different days. I have emptied the canister at least 6 times. My vacuum bag on the Oreck was never that full after 2 months. I don't know about the longevity of the Dyson, but so far I am impressed with the suction power. It is VERY heavy compared to my Oreck. Now there is no yucky smell in the air after I vacuum.
fomoco
wow! Thanks so much for posting this- I too am considering a dyson- they are just sooo much $$$! I have had an oreck for 4 yrs and I do love it, but I get that smell also! We have 1 dog and 3 kiddos.... I was just wondering, though- we have mostly hardwood floors. I wonder if the dyson would be good on those? ALso- it LNT the best place to get it - since you can use the coupon? (I only have a 20%) THANKS AGAIN! LoveNcMountains
I had central Vac before I moved and decided on the Dyson (no central vac in new house:( ) I have the Dyson animal (purple one) that I got 3.5 years ago. I LOVE IT! Do they still have the little phamplet with it telling about how the inventor originally took it to Hoover and they declined and they are kicking themselves now! Anyway I haven't had any real problems. One time I had something silly wrong with it and I called the 800 number. I kid you not, this is what the lady had me do....She had me turn the vacuum on and then hold the phone to it...she listened and told me I would need a certain special tool....A QUARTER! With this quarter I removed something and then I can't rmember but it fixed I think it was a belt that moves the beater bar. I got a real human when I called the first time too. I don't even remember having to go through a phone tree either. The only other problems I have had was purely my own fault. I didn't realize I needed to remove the filter until I read the book and I hadn't done it in 2 years.....ALSO on mine in the center part of the cansister that you can take out I wasn't making sure to clean it out and the dust got all clogged in there (after 2.5 yrs) and I had to fish out all this dust stuff and it took me about 30 minutes using a long long screwdriver to dig this dust out, outside of course. Again, it probalby could have been avoided had I read the directions. ALSO I do have hardwood floors in my entire downstairs....I roll over my floors with my vac no problem. I have area rugs on some of them too. I also have 4 cats and 3 kids.....You want to make sure you get the Animal (which was purple), one of the more expensive ones, not the yellow one, I don't know about the pink one. The Animal is supposed to be better with dander if I recall correctly, plus it has more attatchments (Animal for Animals like cats and dogs). At the time I got mine the purple one was the best one they had. I don't know now. I know I Have seen a turquiose one also.
nat1jen
fomoco, LNT was the best deal that I could find since I was using the coupon as well as my gift cards to benifit my daughter's travel soccer account. I can look and see if I still have the 25% off coupon. If you print it, they will honor it even though it is expired. I think I saved about $140 with my coupon and then about $40 went to my daughter's soccer account. I looked at the pricing for the new Oreck's, and they aren't cheap either. I also have all hardwoods down (except for the master), and it is doing a good job. It took me a few minutes to figure out how to use the vacuum for the hardwoods. The instruction manual is not the best. The weight of the vacuum and the poor instructions are the 2 negatives. You will be shocked and amazed to see what this vacuum picks up. There is also a Dyson that is available through overstock. I think it is a bronze model. I have a 10% off coupon if you end up buying that one. The good thing about overstock is that you will save in sales tax. My sales tax is almost 10% (9.75). Feel free to PM or email me if you need any coupons. :) LoveNC, I can see how the filter gets clogged up. I have been trying to "fish out" all the junk that doesn't immediately fall out with the handle of a wooden spoon. I still am amazed at all the fine dust and dander that is picked up. I was loyal blue Oreck through and through until I used the Dyson. The Dyson may not be worth it for people that don't have pets, but for pet lovers, it's a must. I love your story of putting the vacuum to the telephone so the customer service rep could listen. That is hilarious. Lu

LuLNT has a 20% off coupon in the sunday paper, if you send me your address I will mail you mine, I only have about 10 of them and I probably won't use them. I also have a Bed Bath and Beyond 20% off ones too if you would rather us it there if you planned on buying it from either of those 2...I also read the fine print Dyson is not listed in the "not good on" section, where the Oreck is on the Bed Bath and Beyond but not LNT. I had purchased mine at Target when I had a 10% off coupon thing.I think I got mine for $450 at the time...I think that included the 10% off. Azzycat
I bought mine about 3.5 years ago, too. I think it was soon after the DC 14 model came out. I learned at the time that each of the model numbers have the EXACT same vaccum, the only difference between the colors is the accessorries it comes with. So the purple animal vaccum is no different than the yellow vaccum in the same model number (DC 7, DC 14, DC 15, DC 17) it just has different accessories. When we vacuumed the house the first time we literally emptied the canister 3 times in one room. We had a Kenmore canister that I LOVED but this Dyson clearly outdid it. The salesman said that he hears that from almost everyone. We have had only two problems with it. First time I called and said my vacuum sounded different. The lady on the phone walked me through disassembling the vacuum to find the clog. You can pretty much pull apart all pieces of this vacuum yourself to clean out clogs! Very very simple and you won't break anything by doing so. Another time I called. A friend had borrowed it and had broken my wand. Somehow it had gotten stuck. They sent me a new wand...free of charge!...within days even though I had gone over the orginal warrenty. Great customer service, great vacuum. If you have a Kohls card you can use the 30% off coupon online. I don't know how much Sears is tonight at their Friends and Family sale, that's where we bought ours years ago (on sale, plus an additional 10% for opening an account). nat1jen
Azzycat, I am happy that you have loved your Dyson. It's nice to know that they do have good customer service. That seems to be the exception to the rule now-a-days. LNT also has a deal when you open an account. I had completely forgotten about that. I already had an account, so the offer wasn't good for me. You can still use your other coupon in addition to the discount with your charge account.
Lidstrom
We've had a Dyson Animal for about 3 years (at least) and it is awesome. When we first got it, we ran our previous vacuum through rooms and then followed with the Dyson and it was filling up while our old one didn't fill a bag through the entire house. It was clearly not up to the task. As others have stated, it is also very easy to take apart and then get back together without breaking anything. It is not heavy and very mobile around the home. My mother-in-law bought the "Shark", the vacuum supposedly "just as good as a Dyson." It was quite heavy in comparison, very difficult to take apart, and hard to move around. She returned it in favor of a Dyson after my wife did a demo for her.
fomoco
WOW! Thanks everyone for your comments, I am getting more and more convinced that I need to get this DYSON! - I have been thinking about it for like 6 months- just was not sure about the hardwood floor thing..My ORECK seems to scratch my new hardwood floors- and we paid a LOT of $$$ for those so that is my big thing! Ever notice any scratching those of you with hardwood? Thanks everyone for the coupon offers- I do have the 20 % BBB and LNT coups- I save them. I could also look into opening an acct to save more- thanks for the suggestions! I wonder about the sears FF sale tonight....(someone did bring that up)! 30% at kohls would be cool too- maybe I'll look into that... One comment (on another board) was someone who has both a dyson and an oreck. She sd that she liked both but preferred the oreck because it was waaayyy lighter and the dyson had given her trouble and when she had it fixed it seemed cheap because it was all made of plastic...(??) any thoughts on that? TIA- WENDY:yup:
nat1jen
Wendy, the Oreck is very very light. The Dyson seems so heavy compared to my Oreck. It is not something that I would try to use on the stairs. The Dyson is make of plastic, but it is very solid. It does not feel cheap or flimsy at all. I would recommend an Oreck to people with back issues and those households without pets. I still cannot believe all the dirt, dander, and hair that I have picked up. Do you know anyone with a Dyson? Maybe you could borrow one, and see how it works on your floors. Don't forget that I have a 25% off coupon for LNT if you want it. I can just email you the link. It expired near the end of October, but they will take expired coupons. Open an account and save another 10 or 15% (I can't remember), and you'll get a great price. By the way, I did not purchase my Dyson on-line. I got it at the store. If you do order on-line, make sure that you check the box for pick up at your store so that you can get free shipping. LoveNcMountains
I have had my hardwoods (yes buuukuuu bucks we invested AND did it ourselves!) and mine has not scratched my floors. I have 2 sets of stairs, and the stair attatchement is nice that came with my purple one. It is a smaller head that you attatch to the wand to use on stairs and mattresses. It is not light but I don't have any real problems taking it up and down my stairs. If it wasn't so expensive I would buy a second one to keep on my second floor..... BUT it seems like the purple one compared to the yellow had a hepa filter or some special filter that the yellow one didn't have. I don't know it was several years ago. Plastic will not scratch the floor as easily at metal (not that I know what the oreck is made of).....Mine has never scratched my floor, that I have seen. And I have found scratches on my floors from other things.

Panda Girl
How is it empying the Dyson. doesn't all the dander, dust and light particles fly up? Or stick to the plastic housing that the dirt is collected in?
littlesdcen
http://www.dyson.com/store/parts.asp?accessory=ACC-HARDFTOOL-GEN&product=DC07-PL-HEPA Sorry I don't know how to post a link for the above. But it is what I use on my hardwood floors. I Love my Dyson. I am also in favor of the dusting brush and the car crevice tool.
nat1jen
Pandagirl, my Dyson has a button that I push that opens the bottom of the canister to dump all the junk in the trash can. Just shake it a little, and most of it all comes out. I am happy NOT to keep all that junk in a bag in my vacuum cleaner. No wonder my house smelled like wet dog after I vacuumed. Azzycat
How is it empying the Dyson. doesn't all the dander, dust and light particles fly up? Or stick to the plastic housing that the dirt is collected in?It's very easy to empty. There is a trigger on the top that unlatches the bottom and everything just falls out. You can also flip a switch on the top of the canister to completely separate the canister from the top. This is helpful if you are like me and have pet hair that gets stuck up in the top and doesn't empty from the bottom easily. If you have allergies or are worried about dust flying up, they recommend putting the canister into a bag first before emptying it. I have taken grocery bags and easily emptied the canister into these, then tied the bag up and thrown it in the trash. If dirt sticks to the canister, you can easily wipe it out. If you use a damp rag/paper towel, you just have to dry it out for a few minutes before using. Personally I don't worry so much about it at this point. I used to. nat1jen
Azzycat, how do you separate the canister? The one big negative about the Dyson is that my owner's manual is virtually worthless. I am finding out things through trial and error. Thanks for any help. theboyzmom
I bought my Dyson during the last great Dyson debate on here....worth every penny! I have 3 boys, 2 dogs and both hardwood and carpeted floors. No scratches on the hardwood! I can't believe how easy this thing is to use and how much gunk it picks up! Even leaves! I got the purple one too...I haven't even used all the attachments yet and still love it!
