lisamag
ok heres the project. my landlord has agreed to remodel my bathroom he's paying for the labor and some of the items being replaced in the bathroom. which i'll be paying for the rest of the time i live here. he's going to charge me a % of the cost and add it to my monthly rent. so i figure i might as well lay out for some of the stuff and pay for it once rather then the rest of my time here. we want to pay for the tiles on the walls, the floor, pick out the tub. the bathroom sink don't work (hasn't in 20 yrs) so i'm thinking of just pulling it out if it if we can't get this one to work why buy a new one. my question is where can we go to get the best price for tiles and maybe the tub. i know there's home depot are there other places besides the little stores around that charge an arm and a leg for things? thanks for any advice. If it is needed because fixtures are broken, than its the landlords obligation to do the repairs or replacement. Ok, onto your question LOL Lowe's and Home Depot have instore tile that generally falls around 90 cents a square foot, its nice because it is usually neutral and appeals to a wide variety of people. Tubs should be pretty reasonable and standard as well as sinks/vanitys etc. You could also get online Costco.com and they have some nice vanity/sink/cabinet combos that are very nice. You could find fixtures like faucets etc on eBay at very reasonable cost but again, these can be found at Lowes, Home Depot type stores. I know bigger areas also have large home improvement centers besides Lowes and Home Depot. Good luck with your project but I still think the landlord should pay for the fixtures, tile and labor to remodel a bathroom that doesn't work (if its just asethetics than really not his obligation). JMHO :)
Ripn
No help in what you want to do, but why do you have to pay anything to fix broken stuff in a place you do not own?
biomajor
Why do you have to pay to increase his property value? If it doesn't work, he should fix it anyway. I've lived in a few rentals and all of the major stuff my landlords were responsible for and actually did, or took completely off the rent if I did it or had it done. lisamag
ok fixing the sink is his responsibility, and he and i both know that, they tried to fix it years ago and the plumber said that the pipes in the walls had to be taken out and replaced. ok cheap landlord don't want to do that. i asked for the remodeling, he did it for another tenant and i like the way it looks could be better but it's nice. she said that it cost the landlord around $3800.00 and she got a rent increase of $50 a month she had this done about 10 yrs ago and she still paying that extra $50 that work has been paid off a long time ago but she still paying for it and will do so as long as she is there. i figure if i pay for some of the stuff it will bring the cost down so i won't have such a high increase on my rent. thats why i'm paying for some of the stuff. i'm not paying for the tub or the sink i just want to get a good price and tell the landlord where to get it. since the guy he uses to do the work, don't care what he buys whether it's good or a piece of crap so i want good stuff at a good price. scrabbler
A lot of times contractors work with a specific place that gives them a sort of kick back on the price. Your good deal might not be as good of a deal as a contractor can get. And yes, places like Lowes and Home Depot will typically match prices and have the lowest. zooskoo
Our Lowes often will have clearance prices on returns, overstock, disconituations, etc.--somestimes with an additional off the clearance price. We have gotten some great deals on bathroom fixtures, light fixtures, etc. Might be worth checking out.

Fishboysmom
Try looking at an actual tile store. Sometimes you can get great deals on closeout/discontinued items. We got a high grade tile for our kitchen floor for the same price as a low grade tile. It was a discontinued item.

He should have to pay for it to be fixed! Was it working when you moved in?
ashemgra
Check with your local Habitat for Humanity store IF you are lucky enough to have one! They get a lot of overstock/discontinued stuff from the local Home Depot or Lowes and sell at a fraction of the cost! Boxes of nice tile for $5 sometimes less!!! Nice vanities that are used or were floor models at the local stores. I know that I got a new tub/shower, vanity and tile to redo the whole bathroom for less than $150!!! trbarginhunter
See if your local Home Depot or Lowes is running a "special"--my neighbor was remodeling his house, and he bought a LOT of material when they ran a special for new credit card users--everything he bought in a specific period of time was an extra 15% off. It was a great deal for him!
