I’m am what you would call technology illiterate. I get very overwhelmed by all the choices and specs and different jargon that I can’t quite wrap my head around it all. I need a smart TV, 50-55 inches and from a reliable brand to watch tv shows, movies and football on. I would like to stay $600 or less but I’m not sure if that is a reasonable budget or not.  I have no idea what I should be looking for in the sale ads to even try to figure out what is a good deal. Any suggestions/advice? Have you seen any in ads that have made you excited to wait in line (virtually or in person) for it?

You're probably going to find the best during BF week. There are a lot to choose from; even just all the brands. I think you've got most of your bases covered, but maybe which Smart TV framework do you want? (e.g. Fire TV, Roku, etc.)

I don't remember anything major standing out, but there may have been a few; I'll keep my eyes open.

I see that Hisense is trying to make a push this year and get into more homes. I have never tried that brand. TCL has a few decent deals at Walmart and Amazon. I think I am going to get a tv from Costco or Sams so I can get the full 3-5 year warranty. I am tired of the TV's dying after 2 years

I feel like I've been lucky with TVs. My Black Friday TV (Sharp) from Circuit City (yes, it's that old) is still alive. All my Samsungs from 9 years ago, and even my Insignia that lives on the back porch for 2 years hasn't had issues.

My TCL backlight just died. I bought it 2 years ago. I tried to change it myself which wasn't hard but tedious, but I stepped on the LCD screen and ruined the TV.

Only issue I've really had in the last years was our 75" TCL that died. Wasn't really it's fault though bad storms caused electrical issues while we were out of town. Took out the controller boards. Will replace them at some point. Went and got the Hisense (3rd one we have now). All have been excellent TV's the oldest one we have is like 4 years old and works like new still, outlasted our LG that died after 3 years lol.

i have two plasmas that must be 15 years old (or more) and they work great (not getting rid of them).  seems stuff made nowadays is made to not last very long but is much much cheaper.  I suppose you get what you pay for.  BJs has 55in Samsungs for less than $300.  I am sure other retails are in the same ballpark.

Id go with a Samsung. I've had good luck with them and we don't have cable so Samsung + gives us a lot more channels than just over the air TV.

I'm looking at these for kids who primarily play games on a television...

Hisense 65-Inch Class U7 Series Mini-LED Pro ULED 4K UHD Google Smart TV (65U7N) - QLED Quantum Dot Color, Dolby Vision, Native 144Hz, Up to 1500-Nit, Full Array Local Dimming, Motion Rate 480 - Walmart.com

Hisense and TCL are my favorite 'budget' televisions.  At $698, these do not exactly qualify as budget, but you get a lot of value for your dollar.

Change your entertainment game! The U7 series smart display from Hisense is packed with lots of exciting features that dramatically improve your watching and playing experience. Think: Mini-LED Pro, QLED Quantum Dot color technology and 144Hz Game Mode Pro. Plus, we even equipped the U7 with a NEXTGEN TV ATSC 3.0 tuner and Wi-Fi 6E router compatibility, making it virtually future-proof.

  • MINI-LED PRO WITH FULL ARRAY LOCAL DIMMING: Experience the latest in backlight technology. Mini-LED Pro delivers outstanding picture quality with peak brightness up to 1500 nits, revealing stars in the night sky. Every game, show, and movie comes into sharp focus.
  • QLED COLOR: Broaden your color spectrum significantly to create over a billion shades for vibrant, lifelike images.
  • HI-VIEW AI ENGINE PRO: The Hi-View AI Engine PRO chipset is the brain behind your screen, using deep learning and advanced technologies to enhance your viewing experience.
  • NATIVE 144Hz with GAME MODE PRO & GAME BAR: Level up your gaming with the native 144Hz panel, VRR from 48Hz to 144Hz, Auto Low Latency, and Game Bar. Enjoy smooth, responsive gameplay.
  • TOTAL HDR SOLUTION with DOLBY VISION HDR, HDR10+ Adaptive, HDR10, HLG, ADVANCED HDR BY TECHNICOLOR: See all your favorite content in dazzling detail, with enhanced colors and deeper blacks.
  • 2.1 MULTI-CHANNEL SOUND with DOLBY ATMOS: Our 3-speaker setup delivers immersive audio. With 40W max power, a built-in subwoofer, and smart audio decoding, experience all-encompassing sound without extra equipment.
  • IMAX ENHANCED: Certified by IMAX and Hollywood’s leading technical specialists, this feature delivers IMAX’s signature picture quality and DTS®-powered audio immersion from the comfort of your home.
  • FILMMAKER MODE: Watch movies and shows as the filmmakers intended, preserving their original aspect ratio, colors, and frame rates.
  • GOOGLE TV: Google TV organizes movies, shows, live TV, and more from your apps and subscriptions, offering personalized recommendations based on your interests.
  • WIFI 6E ENABLED: Experience faster speeds, lower latency, and seamless streaming with WiFi 6E.
  • NEXTGEN TV ATSC 3.0: Unlock stunning clarity, richer colors, and immersive sound with NextGen TV.
  • 2-YEAR WARRANTY: Enjoy added peace of mind with Hisense’s 2-Year Warranty on ULED TVs, doubling the industry standard.

144hz for gaming is excellent.  With the ATSC 3.0 tuner, you should be able to pick up FREE HDTV with a mud flap antenna in the right window.  Google TV is a good OS, but you can always switch to Roku or FireTV by adding an inexpensive dongle.
