They're coupons good for the amount stated that's generated on your receipt when you buy certain items or whatever is required. The ECBs are valid on future purchases. CVS uses those scan cards to give you their sale prices. If you don't sign up for one of their cards, you supposedly don't ge the sale price. But generally the cashier has a card specifically to scan for those who don't have their own. Unlike Walgreens, CVS also takes part in the Upromise program.
