Christmas/Holiday Plans

What are your plans for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day?

Christmas Eve: We are going to a small gathering at my cousins house, then we will likely head back home change into PJ's grab our Hot Cocoa and then go look at lights. My wife mentioned going to Christmas services at Church but not sure what time that will be yet. Think we are doing all sorts of appetizers and pies.

Christmas Day: We are having my sister and her family over for dinner, my cousin and his family may come by later in the evening after they finish their other plans. Most likely doing Ham, Sweet Potato Casserole, Mashed Potatoes, Parmesan Broccoli, Corn Casserole, Rolls and then a bunch of cookies we are baking tomorrow.

New Years Eve: This is my anniversary so we always go out to lunch (just my wife and I), then that evening we are having some family and friends over for a NYE party. Some of them will likely end up staying over so they don't have to drive back home that night and then we can all stay up playing Cards Against Humanity later. :sidesplit  Thinking about either doing smoked brisket or if the amount of people isn't huge doing smoked prime rib. If we do brisket I will do cheesy potatoes and probably  either baked beans or green beans and rolls. If I do prime rib I will likely make twice baked potatoes and grand marnier carrots.

Christmas Eve, my kids and grandkids will come to my house and open gifts. I've tried doing a whole dinner thing that night, but no one is ever really interested and then I just have a big mess to clean up :).  They will probably leave fairly early, and if they do I will head up to my sister's and we will go drive around looking at lights.

Christmas Day, my sisters and I will go to our Mom's. It's a low-key hang out and we'll just have sandwiches and enjoy being together.  Some of the kids might drop by at some point during the day.

The evening after Christmas, we will be back at Mom's for the whole family dinner. I will make chicken & dumplins and rolls, my sister will make fried chicken, and my other sister will make potatoes.  We had a heck of a time trying to schedule that dinner this year. Several years ago, we had decided we would always do it the Saturday after Christmas. This year my nephew's wife's family is renting a cabin for the weekend of New Years, so they can't be there. The older Mom gets, the more important it is to us that every one of her kids and grandkids are there for Christmas, but with the grandkids grown with families of their own, as well as jobs and other responsibilities, that's not always easy.

I don't usually do much on New Year's Eve. Sit back in my recliner with a book and a cup of cocoa and flip through the celebrations on the TV :).

Christmas Eve - Work - small special seafood dinner for Hubby and me.

Christmas Day - Work - Prime rib dinner for Hubby, myself and mom with Alzheimer's which we will take to her with her gifts (which she won't remember) - this disease has taken everything from me. :(

New Year's Eve and Day - rinse and repeat.

The saddest holiday I have ever had. :(

That's not good. My grandfather was getting to that point and would have some good and some not so good days. I read the other day that they are testing a new medicine for it that's had some really good results so far. I hope this is something that can soon become a thing of the past.

So very sorry, friend… [emoji22] Your mom may not remember this but she will feel the love and, someday, you will look back on this time with the knowledge you loved her well in the midst of the most difficult times. Praying for all of you.

  • 2 weeks later...

My plans were to spend Christmas Eve with cousins, aunts and some of my kids at my cousin's home eating lots of potluck food (tacos, arroz con gondules y habichuelas guisadas, virgin coquito, ambrosia, cake and whatever else was brought) and Christmas was going to be just with my kids and grand with a nice dinner of ham, broccoli casserole, cornbread dressing, candied yams, collard greens, hot water cornbread... just food, family and fun... however, that was derailed by one of if not the worst snow storm in history... two and a half days of blowing, blinding snow (12-23 early morning -12/24 late night)... I was stuck in my house, literally, as the snow had blown up against both doors and I couldn't open them to get out... streets were not passable and stranded cars were all on the roads... a driving ban was in affect in the city from 12/23 - 12/28...and then we had Spring like weather by that weekend Christmas Eve I watched movies and finished wrapping gifts, Christmas morning I opened the only gift I had (from my GD Secret Santa), talked to all of my children and mom, made my Christmas Dinner and ate by myself and watched movies until I fell asleep... NYE was spent in church and the following day consisted of watching movies all day.
