These newer ones can now be converted to linux and run a lite version of DD-WRT. A good solution if you want this router specifically.

I am renting our modem (actually came free for 1 yr, soon will be $5). I have a Linksys 2.4 ghz Wireless B router (new) and noticed that this router mentioned here is a Wireless G and also can be B? I am confused, how do I know which I need or should I get the one from Buy.com because it is both G and B. I am on Qwest DSL? Advice would be great. Thank you

Wireless G is backward compatible with wireless B. Backwards compatibility is required by the standard.

G is considerably faster for an internal network. However, even the B standard is plenty fast enough for your DSL.

What type of computer is connecting to the router you have now? Are there other computers on your network that you need to transfer files to? Do you have good coverage and single strength with your current router? Is your current router new enought that you can return it?

Answer those questions, and I will be able to give some more sound advice.

Its a Dell computer, newer (about a year or so old, 512mb) I have one other computer networking off of it on a wireless adapter and going to hook up a third to it soon, I didn't know you could transfer files so I guess probably a no, the strength is excellent, the other computer sits right on top of the router and the third will be down the hall. The modem I bought is new so i can resell it, just wondering if the Wireless G would be a better option. I noticed that on the G (don't know on description, I could setup our printer so all the computers could use it, would love to know how to do that and if the B is compatible or just get the G to be alittle better off. Thank you for the information given and any other advice that you might have.

Just clarifying, you do know the DSL modem and wireless router (802.11b or 802.11g) are two different components, right? Unless you plan on sharing files within your network, 802.11b should work just fine. I used 802.11b for several years until the wireless router died. Then I bought a Linksys 802.11g which works great.

ok, no I didn't know a modem and router was different, I just put in the unit that came with my setup kit, it is an Actiontec DSL modem with wireless gateway? So if I take that off and put on the Linksys Wireless B-broadband router, I wouldn't get it to work? Or do I need a modem and the router, so confusing, I guess I should read up on it. Thanks for info

They are usually separate however some DSL and cable companies provide a single device which serves as your modem and wired or wireless router. If you were to purchase this Linksys 802.11g, you would still need a DSL modem. If your current Actiontec works just fine, I would just keep what you have.

Ok, I guess I will buy out the modem (it was free use for one year, I might look into buying a new one instead of using the one that came with it but don't know yet-mine doesn't look like the ones in the link you provided but probably the same thing). So, I don't need a router at all? With the modem that I have (wireless gateway), can I still have all my computers use the same printer (or that isn't part of the modem feature)? I would assume that I need some sort of wireless device on the printer? I hooked the other computer up with a wireless adapter card and will the third computer too, as it stands with just the Actiontec modem, can I use one printer? One more question, can I share files with the other computers or would I need to hook up the router in addition to the modem? Thanks for helping me out.....

If you are only using the computers to surf the internet, then B is plenty fast. Yes, you can share printers using the B technlology and it will be fine. If you want to share files between computers, I would suggest considering a G router.
