Scott Posted June 20, 2006 Posted June 20, 2006 This is a highly rated drive. I just recently ordered one. I will be testing out the lightscribe feature soon.

inogenius Posted June 20, 2006 Posted June 20, 2006 Darnit. I bought one too. It's supposedly going to be used on this new PC I'm supposedly building.
Scott Posted June 22, 2006 Posted June 22, 2006 I downloaded the latestest software from http://www.lightscribe.com last night and too it for a spin. I must say, although the images are not the highest quality, I'm quite impressed at the overall resuts. It took about 18-20 minutes to scribe a fairly detailed Disc in "best" quality. I think that they have done a lot to speed up the process. I'm at work now, but I will do a scan of an actual disc that I scribed and post it later tonight. Of course, the burning capability of the drive is great as well. One of the best out there.
i-bystander Posted June 22, 2006 Posted June 22, 2006 Good to hear... can't wait to see the actual disc for I've never seen one. Does your CPU/case temp spike up when you're scribing? If so, by how much?

If so, by how much?I didn't notice anything at all... I'm not sure why it would since there realy isn't any heat involved in the process. And the drive actually spins slower when etching the face.

And the drive actually spins slower when etching the face. Well, it is continuously spinning for at least 15 minutes... I thought that would generate more heat, at least. Question: can you just scribe on any (scribable) CD, or do you have to burn a new copy first, then scribe? I mean, can you do it independently of each other? On the flipside, if you are burning and scribing, which one goes first - the burning or the scribing?

So if you have an audio CD with lables for the song, you can add new songs later. I haven't tried this feature at all yet. I don't think it matters what order you do it in. The scribe process and data burning are completely separate. I even did them with completely different applications. So lets say that you have a buisness and you want to put your logo on CDs, but the content would be different... I'm pretty sure that you could do all of the scribing and then burn whatever data you need later. That would save you time when you actually need to produce the product.

Helpful information there, Mr. D. Thanks a lot for the clarification. :) What media (brand/speed/etc.) are you using BTW?
Scott Posted June 22, 2006 Posted June 22, 2006 Helpful information there, Mr. D. Thanks a lot for the clarification. :) What media (brand/speed/etc.) are you using BTW?So far I've only used Memorex Lightscribe CDs and I lowered the burn speed to 12x for compatibility. I also did a DVD+RW at 4X no problem. However, that was the limit of my old media. I guess I don't really have any "new" media to test it with... all of my stuff is 8x DVD-R. I still have about a stack of 50 I need to go through before I buy new. :)
RossMAN Posted June 22, 2006 Posted June 22, 2006 Stop replying to this thread stating how awesome this DVD Burner is because now I want one! Scott and Ray - I hold you two responsible for this
Scott Posted June 22, 2006 Posted June 22, 2006 Stop replying to this thread stating how awesome this DVD Burner is because now I want one! Scott and Ray - I hold you two responsible for this Well... hopefully this doesn't get me banned. Here is a scan of the CD that I designed for the memorial DVD for my Grandparents. The scan really doesn't do it justice. http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f105/BAlGaInTl/testcd.jpg
i-bystander Posted June 23, 2006 Posted June 23, 2006 WOW! That looks really good... is that how they all turn out? It looks kinda sepia-ish - is that how you wanted it to look, or that's just the way it is? (I guess I'm asking if it can it do color too.) :)

The media is that color, and you can only make it lighter or darker. I think that that sort of gold colored media is the only available right now. Think of it as a black and white image, but in shades of gold...
cthulhu Posted June 24, 2006 Posted June 24, 2006 That is really cool. I want one too. Scott, the disc you made looks really nice.
mrn8 Posted June 26, 2006 Posted June 26, 2006 I love Lightscribe. The discs are a little more expensive, but not by enough that it's any more than labels and ink to print your own.

If you are just doing a normal print label, you can just print it while the disc is burning... Give and take I suppose.
RossMAN Posted July 19, 2006 Posted July 19, 2006 What's the current best Dual Layer DVD±RW Writer w/ LightScribe for under $50?
mrn8 Posted July 19, 2006 Posted July 19, 2006 Lite-On SHM-165H6S I'm not sure that it's absolutely the best, but it's incredibly popular and gets consistently good reviews. I use that one in my home machine and have been happy with it.
Scott Posted July 19, 2006 Posted July 19, 2006 The Benq from this thread is still only $41.95 shipped from NewEgg as well. It has been a great burner for me so far... I've put a few different media through it... no coasters yet. I'm also having a lot of fun with the LightScribe feature.
