Scott Posted May 23, 2006 Posted May 23, 2006 This is also on my short list of GPS for myself. I like this one, the Magellan 800, and the Garmin Nuvi. Decisions Decisions... :)
RossMAN Posted May 23, 2006 Posted May 23, 2006 After weeks of research, I bought the Garmin StreetPilot c320 and we love it!
Scott Posted May 23, 2006 Posted May 23, 2006 After weeks of research, I bought the Garmin StreetPilot c320 and we love it!I can never seem to talk myself out of the "Bleeding Edge" The nice thing about the Garmins is their ability to now now import your own POI from CSV files. Very cool. I've read about sites that you can actually download that days speed traps, construction etc, and push them to your GPS. No idea how well that works, but it sounds great.

We don't use our GPS a lot but when we do, it's very useful and incredibly easy to use. I'm glad we chose Garmin.

I've looked all around and can only find the speed trap files for England. If you ever come across US files, PLEASE let me know! edit: found a site, http://www.gps-poi-us.com/

femalesliealot Posted May 24, 2006 Posted May 24, 2006 For you guys with Garmins, I just found this on their website last night and put it on my Nuvi...VEHICLES instead of an arrow!!! I had to upgrade my software to v 3.30 for it to work. http://www.garmin.com/vehicles/

I had to upgrade my software to v 3.30 for it to work. http://www.garmin.com/vehicles/Garmin seems to be adding features much faster than Magellan. I thought for sure that they would come up with some sort of POI loader right after Garmin, but nothing yet from what I have seen. How do you like your Nuvi so far?
femalesliealot Posted May 24, 2006 Posted May 24, 2006 I love the Nuvi. One of the things I like most about it is it's size. It's not as deep as most of the other GPS units that I saw at Circuit City, it's about the size of a wallet. This is my first GPS unit though so other than the size, I don't know how it compares to others on the market so i'll just tell you some things that I like about it. The voice is very clear to understand and it gives me enough warning of upcoming turns and such, apparently you can change the voice but I haven't tried that out yet. I've intentionally taken wrong turns before and it recalculates a new route within 5 seconds which is fast enough for me. When it gets dark out it automatically changes the screen background to a black color so you're not driving around with a big white spotlight on you which is great too. One thing that I thought I wouldn't use much is the built in MP3 player, but it turns out that I did away with all of my CDs and now use the MP3 player all of the time. My car has an audio input on the front of the radio so I can just plug it in there from the Nuvi and it plays via my car speakers. It's easy to sort through all of the music by artist, album and song. It has a built in drive which is about 1.8 Gigs(I think) so you can store lots of MP3s and pictures on it plus it has the SD slot for even more storage. The latest feature (that I mentioned in an earlier post) with the cars is a nice little touch. You can change the arrow to a car, monster truck or motorcycle. Overall, I love the Nuvi.

Overall, I love the Nuvi. That is great to hear. Now I just need to find someone with one of the bluetooth models (310, 360). Then, the Nuvi can also act as a hands free device in your car for all your cell phone calls. Do I need that? No. It is just too cool....

Then, the Nuvi can also act as a hands free device in your car for all your cell phone calls. Do I need that? No. It is just too cool.... Ahhh, I love hands free calling! I have Onstar so I use the hands free calling occasionally and it's great EXCEPT minutes are rediculously priced. It's something like $39.99 for 100 minutes. I should have gotten a bluetooth model so that I wouldn't have to pay the crazy minute costs to make hands free calls. Oh yeah, if you get your GPS unit at Circuit City you can buy a warranty of some sort that covers the unit for two years for like $149. Ontop of that, if you take your unit into CC after owning it for like 23 months and say it doesn't work right, you'll be allowed to upgrade and get the amount that you origionally paid for the GPS unit deducted from a new unit. In two years I plan on doing that...that will give me $800 towards the purchase of a newer, better one.

Actually I'm looking into the TomTom GO 910 mentioned above (mainly bc it comes with US and Europe maps installed and ready to use), and learned that it can connect to iPods. Pretty cool, eh, imagine many people already have iPods so this is a great feature, rather than a GPS with MP3 built in. Anyone else reading up on the TomTom GO 910 or have one already?
