I am so disappointed that I missed the Dell monitor for $279.20 that was posted on 1/8/06. When I go to the link, it is now $349.99.

Anyone know of any similar deals? I would prefer a Dell or Samsung for under $300 19" Flat panel if possible.

Thanks!!!

We don't really play games or watch movies on it. I surf the net and do some work on it. We mainly need thye thin panel because of space.

Thanks!

In that case, you don't need an LCD with superfast response time. You might look at the Samsung 930B, Circuit City has it for $330 after rebate. If your video card has a DVI connector, you'll want to get a DVI cable as it's not included with the monitor. Don't buy the cable at Circuit City for $60, find a local computer shop and save a ton.

Dell has the 1905FP with 3-year warranty on sale for $320.

A monitor lasts a long time so buy one with a DVI connector, even if you aren't going to use it right away. Most people feel the picture is better when using the DVI connection versus the analog VGA one.

When looking at specs, consider:

Contrast ratio (difference in brightness from the darkest to brightest pixel) - 500:1 or higher is good

Response time: you're not a gamer, so just about anything less than 25ms would be OK.

Brightness: most LCD monitors are plenty bright, so any brand-name monitor would be adequate in this area.

Other things you might want to look at is how adjustable the stand is - some only tilt back and forth, others also have a height adjustment, perhaps a swivel feature too. If you are doing serious color work, you'll want an 8-bit panel; otherwise a 6-bit panel will be OK.

Some LCDs have backlight bleedthrough - the light behind the screen can be seen slightly in a dark room. If you will be working in a darkened room, that can be annoying, because in some parts of the screen you might see a grayish tint when it should be black. In a bright store you might not be able to notice it. If you work in normal room light, it shouldn't be a problem.

Thanks for the great advice. Those are the two monitors I have actually narrowed my choices too but was holding out for something a little cheaper.

I tried to access newegg.com but it says it can't find the site.

Can anyone tell me which of the below would be my best pick? We do not play games or DVD's, just need a nice flat panel black monitor. Also, does an adjustable monitor make a big difference? And is contrast the main thing I am looking at? Also, ist tigerdirect.com easy to buy from and receive your rebates?

It's a shame that your computer can't find the Newegg site. That's a heck of a deal on that monitor...

Maybe you should try again? Maybe they were having trouble with the site when you tried it? It's working for me... www.newegg.com

Also, you should know that TigerDirect is a mixed bag as far as customer satisfaction goes. Go here to read their reviews on Reseller Ratings:

http://www.resellerratings.com/seller1983.html

And here is Newegg's rating:

http://www.resellerratings.com/seller2121.html

And Newegg has over 9K ratings vs. the 3K ratings for TigerDirect.

But I guess you have to do what you feel is best, but I've read enough reviews about TigerDirect to make me never want to shop there.

You should also read the following:

And since you asked about rebates, read this too:

We have made LOTS of purchases from tigerdirect.com (4 @ xmas) and have NEVER had a problem. We purchased the X2gen 19" flat panel LCD (we bought silver but they have it black) that you have listed from them for our 15 yr son for Christmas and he absolutely LOVES it! And he does do gaming etc. He's VERY into computers! And VERY picky about them!! Mailed the rebate on 12/23 and received confirmation via email that it is approved and will be mailed last week. Have never had a problem receiving thier rebates. They guarantee all of their rebates.

I ended up ordering that same one in black. I had one pixel out but you can hardly see it.

It is perfect for what we need it for. I am about to mail off my rebate and hopefully there won't be any issues.

Thanks!
