Jen08 Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 Just wanted to see if anyone fixes a big breakfast on Thanksgiving morning. I try to fix a good breakfast since I don't have to cook for Thanksgiving. I'm lucky enough to still have my parents and inlaws and they aren't ready to give up the cooking and letting the us older adults fix lunch/supper so I like to fix something good for breakfast. This year I was thinking about fixing some bacon and French toast. I have never cooked good french toast and am very unsure on what is the best bread to use. I have read alot of recipes to use day old sliced bread but when I have used sliced regular sandwich bread before, it just doesn't taste as good. I want to use something different but not sure what. Any suggestions or good recipes for french toast?
jonboy_nellie Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 A good cinnamon swirl bread is my favorite. I always add a bit of vanilla extract to the egg mix. Springing for real maple syrup can elevate any breakfast as well. 1
npg Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 I always use Challah bread for french toast. If you live near a Publix grocery store it's located in the bakery section. I need to find my receipe but I like to make it as a casserole the night before and bake it in the oven.
magickallight Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 I always sneak a little bit of what I am cooking and am too full for breakfast or lunch. LOL!

I posted a slew of French toast casserole recipes years ago somewhere on here. Probably a Chr-stmas brunch thread...

The only grocery store I'm near is walmart, food lion and IGA. I may have to make the challah bread if I can't find it at one of those places. I've never made it before so I may need to try it before thanksgiving. How many days should I make it in advance? If I make it on the tuesday night before, would it still be good on Thanksgiving morning?
tyreejames Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 I use Texas toast and my family loves it. I don't do a big breakfast on Thanksgiving though bc I cook dinner: we usually have cinnamon rolls and maybe some bacon. Christmas is our big breakfast bc we don't do a big dinner that day.
npg Posted October 29, 2013 Posted October 29, 2013 Challah is also sometimes called Egg Bread. I've never checked Walmart and I don't live near Food Lion or IGA. I'm sure it will be fine if you make it a few days in advance because you're going to be pouring egg, milk, vanilla, etc over it. It doesn't have the consistency of french toast that you make on top of your stove. This might be the thread Gator Pam is talking about: http://forums.gottadeal.com/topic/19642-christmas-brunch-recipes/#post208224

It is a stuffed cream cheese with strawberries.
arci122 Posted October 29, 2013 Posted October 29, 2013 I'm usually too busy at Kmart, CVS and Rite Aid that morning to make breakfast...Maybe I can give these ideas to my dh
