JazzMama
We have made it our annual family "mini-vacation" to go the first weekend in December to Branson, MO and stay at Big Cedar Wilderness Club. They have such amazing seasonal things to do ... Christmas tree lighting complete with refreshments and a visit with Santa where he gives the child a stuffed black bear, wagon rides through the resort, Breakfast with Santa, Gingerbread making class, etc. Also, they deliver gingersnaps to your room every night. This year, we are having an elf tuck Cailyn into bed and read her a Christmas story. Although we won't make it this year, we also went to Silver Dollar City in 04 and watched their Christmas parade, Dickens Christmas Carol production, and took the train ride through their lighted displays. Just made me curious to see if anyone else went somewhere specifically to see Christmas events/displays.
treasure60
We are only going to events close to home this year. We will be going to my children's Christmas concerts and to a Christmas Parade in the town I grrew up in that is a big event every year. That I won't miss because you can go for sleigh ride, see Santa, have cider and other refreshments, buy crafts, and shop at the local merchants that are having sales that day. hpowers
Big Cedar Lodge sounds cool. I've thought about that several times but have just never taken the time to do it. We usually do our vacationing in the summer at a beach or something so hubby doesn't think of vacation in the winter time.
malachitecat
Just having a few days off with fiancee and his daughter is enough of a vacation for me. With 4 senior accounting courses, working 30 hours a week, and helping with a friend's 2 year old, a nice hot bubble batch seems like a mini vacation. lol
misshayley
My DH and I are on "vacation" right now. We usually take a long weekend and go to a bordering state, (we are from Ohio and are in PA right now) we use this time to finish up our Christmas shopping and just get away from everything. This works out really well, because my husband loves to shop, and we can have a great time without the stress of home and work.
best4less
I'd give me left arm for any type of vacation right now! But no, DH has to work and can't take any vacation time until after the holidays. We wanted to go to NYC for a couple days but that doesn't look like its going to happen. We won't be going anywhere until Feb or April
josetann
Just got back from the Opryland Hotel. If you haven't seen it, you'd never believe how big it is. It's the largest hotel under one roof. They give you maps when you check in. They have four main sections. Cascades has some waterfalls, a large rotating lounge, and some outdoor restaurants (as outdoor as you can get while still inside a hotel). Delta has more restaurants, a lot of shops, fountains, and a "river". They have boat rides that go around the river. There's another large, but not as busy section, I think it's called the Garden Observatory or something like that. There's a skywalk that goes over it, or you can walk on the ground level. A few small waterfalls, some goldfish, etc. Then there's the Magnolia section, it's the original part of the hotel and has the convention center, some more shops, and several restaurants. We had a balcony room in the Cascades section, so after a hectic day we could just relax out there. Saw the Rockettes, shopped at Opry Mills, went on a horse drawn carriage ride, and did tons of walking. Got back home around noon, and Jeannie's still asleep (always need a vacation after a vacation). This is our first year of actually staying in a room at the hotel, but we've gone before just to walk around and see all the lights at Christmas (the hotel is a destination in and of itself). The week before Christmas we're going to Myrtle Beach. We went last year and it was quite hectic but still enjoyable. We signed up for two timeshare presentations plus we stayed in another hotel room between the two free ones, so there was a bit of moving around. Then between the second hotel and the third, a hurricane hit. That was the first and hopefully last hurricane I'll drive in. We found shelter in a gas station ten or so miles inland and waited the very worst part out. Hopefully this time things won't be quite as exciting!
