Doesn't look like there are really any deals on the Ipods, other then the $25 itune music card. That stinks I was hoping to get one for somewhat cheap.

You won't see any deals on Apple products because of their policy.

I got my DS the Craig at TRU yesterday as a starter MP3 player to get him used to them. When he is older I can upgrade. It was originally 59.99 and I got a manager's sig. that he would price adjust it for me that day during doorbuster hours. ;)

You will find deals on discontinued (overstock.com) or refurb (store.apple.com) iPods. You aren't likely to find discounts on current models because 1) it's a great product line and Apple can sell everything they can manufacture at close to MSRP or close to it and 2) the markup on iPods is not that high so retailers don't have much room to work. Apple makes most of their profit on the iPods and the retailers make most of their profit on iPod accessories that have much higher markups.

BTW, this is no different than computers, printers, cell phones, etc. For example, there is often more profit on the USB cable you need for your printer than there is on the printer. That's why it's usually not included with the printer. And don't get me started on ink...

Crissy, my son who worked in customer service at Kmart said they don't usually price match. I'm mad at them anyway. He got a much better full time job at a hotel, put in his letter of resignation with notice. The assistant manager there told him to "just get out right now" and she wasn't going to let him work his two weeks and would put him in the do not rehire file. He was working 38 hours a week, just under full time so they didn't have to pay benefits. Plus, he would have to clock out during dinner breaks, but was never allowed to leave, had to eat in the pizza area next to the service desk, and still answer the phone when it rang and help customers who walked up. But, he didn't get paid for the time. I know this is true, because I would bring him lunch sometimes. So he went 2 weeks without any pay.

As to getting an iPod cheaply, there is a way to get 10% off on the Apple website. Go under the educator section, find a school in your neighborhood, and click on it. Then you will get educator pricing. You don't have to be an educator, just know a school. They never check. I know several people who have done this with no problem.

I just bought a 60GB Apple Ipod for $350.00 yesterday at Best Buy. They dropped there price down from $399.99 they said to "Compete with the market" whatever that means. Anyways, thats the best deal Ive found.

I went to the Apple site Education section. I'm actually VP of the PTO at my school so I reallly qualify. :tongue1: Entered the school name, they took me to a webpage that had the products and the school name on the same page.

BUT, I didn't see any discount. I went to the regular site and tried to order the same things and the total was the same. I was looking at the ipod nano 4 GB which seemed to be $229 both places. Even looked at the .pdf file of the education price list and it said $229.

Am I missing something? :gd_stars:

Ok, I'm wanting to get my DH one of the ones that is under $50 (We were looking at the lists the other day and he said he would like to have one of the ones that were under $50. He said he wouldn't want me spending more than that on one.). So, for all of you that are knowledgeble about those things (I'm not very good with technology), which one(s) would you reccomend? Also, what he wants to do is copy songs from CDs he already has, since we have a TON!!! So, I want one that I can do this with.

do not buy your kids a nano the screen breaks way too easily there's a lawsuit against apple for the defective screen I would just go with a cheap mp3 player like a RIO

I agree with psychosixtynine. Do not buy one for a 11 and 13 old kids. They are $200 and they beak very easy. I would go with something cheaper and more rugged. Apple has the corner on the market and if you have a Windows computer you have to convert the files from WMA to MP3 in order for it to work on an I-Pod. The Nano also only has 2 gb of space. That not much when you can get a phillips 6 gb for the same price.

been lurking for a couple weeks now - so here's my first post!

gotta question: we have dial-up connection - how long would it take to download songs onto an MP3 player from a site such as napster?

Thanks in advance!

Depending on file size, you are looking at 5 min or so per song.

You can upload songs already saved to your computer that you got from napster or limewire to MP3 players though, right?

Yes. Just add them to you libary (of whichever program the mp3 player uses).

The iRiver T-10 that BB is offering for $139.99 is a definate deal..the original list price is $199.99. I have a 256MB iRiver and it is tough and is a very good MP3 player. The T-10 is NOT the $149.99 model they also sell.

Speed varies depending on your connection, and of course song length varies as well. In addition, songs are encoded into mp3s. The higher the compression used the smaller the file size. However, the smaller file sizes sound worse than the larger files. Generally speaking an average song encoded at 128K would be around 3-4 Megs. You can expect to download at the rate of 5 min per meg. That would mean about 15-20 minutes per song.

My 13 year old loves her ipod nano. We have had no problems with the screen. There have been some problems but they appear to be a fairly small percentage. There is definantly a name thing here. You can buy a cheaper mp3 player, but you tend to get what you pay for. A Lexus costs more that a comparable Kia but people who want a Lexus don't care. For kids the ipod name is like any other name brand. Like wearing Wal-Mart jeans to school when the other kids are wearing #####.

I would not go as far as the Lexus and Kia comparison, since Kia does not really have a comparable car to Lexus in terms of quality. However, I do agree that the Ipods are a name thing to many people today. Is the Ipod worth the extra price? I have friends who swear the Ipod is the greatest thing since sliced bread, while other friends just swear at their Ipods. Yes, you are paying for the Apple name, but is there added quality too or just the image factor?

If you are getting the mp3 player for a child, look to see how they have taken care of other items they have already. If you know the kid tosses things around at the drop of a hat, maybe the nano with its scratch issues is not the best choice. Bottom line: Everyone will make their own choice and hopefully enjoy many hours of listening to their favorite tunes on whichever player they buy.
