ajogg Posted November 20, 2011 Posted November 20, 2011 I've never heard of a store that would cater to/help handicapped disabled persons on BF - do such stores exist? If so, who are they?
noehlp Posted November 20, 2011 Posted November 20, 2011 While I can not answer your question - I'd like to say this is a GREAT question! I'm curious to hear everyone's answers.
TazErase Posted November 20, 2011 Posted November 20, 2011 I've never heard of a store that would cater to/help handicapped disabled persons on BF - do such stores exist? If so, who are they?I'd love to know as well. I have a daughter with cp that wants to go with the family on BF but due to disability we feel it is safer to leave her with her grandmother instead.
hpowers Posted November 20, 2011 Posted November 20, 2011 Said to say that it usually is tough enough for able bodied people to get around in the crowds. At least Walmart is now indoors at most stores and they actually organize lines and handout tickets for electronic items which has helped a ton.
JohnnyLaRue Posted November 20, 2011 Posted November 20, 2011 When I had fractured my arm the people at Circuit City (now long dead/the store not the people) were helpful enough to carry my stuff to my car.
mgmckny Posted November 20, 2011 Posted November 20, 2011 I think chivalry is dead in most cases, when I was younger with a baby in a stroller, the people in line with me at Target, cleared a path so that he wouldn't get trampled by the door crashers and people would hold things for me while I was getting other stuff. There are exceptions of course but for the most part, I say no. DH is in a wheelchair and he doesn't even like Walmart after 9am on a weekend, can't see him there on BF.
kjunea Posted November 20, 2011 Posted November 20, 2011 I'm afraid I'm not going to be able to do BF this year due to my disability for the first time. I had my ankle replaced at the end of July and I am walking (for the first time in 2 years) without a brace or cast and I am afraid I will get pushed down. I just can't recover that fast anymore. I think I am keeping the computer warm that night instead. Very sad.

I've never had any trouble at Hendersonvilles Target and Staples if you still want the experience without the pushing. There are still lines at Target, but the people are nice. This Staples is usually forgotten and I am usually 4 or 5 in line even after going to Walmart.
nebraskaparkfan Posted November 20, 2011 Posted November 20, 2011 I wish there was. I was in a leg brace last year from mid-calf to mid-thigh. The Menards in Sioux City, Iowa was the worst. The "security" in the parking lot said that they didn't get enough money to do anything more than watch - think of a giant funnel of people pouring into 2 small doors. So even if you were in line, when the store opened, people came from everywhere and shoved those in the line out of the way. When you did get in, I was slammed against the metal railing at the entrance of the store where there is normally a small turnstill thing for people to enter. I had several large bruises from the experience. When I asked a store associate for assistance with getting an item off the shelf, they walked away. This summer I finally had my knee replaced so while I won't have the leg brace, I still need to think about what I'm doing so I don't reinjure it. Unfortunately, there are things I need at Menards b/c they actually have better deals than walmart and many of the other stores, so I might have to figure out a better game plan for shopping there. Standing in line in the Iowa cold for several hours is not an option, particularly as those in line get shoved out of the way regardless.
lorilwayne Posted November 20, 2011 Posted November 20, 2011 Having had a couple of years that I was working on bf I went online and did get a little bit of the bf buzz... not quite the same but maybe have her at home on the computer getting some items and then you could go pick her up after all the craziness. Sad to say a few good people have ruined it for a lot of people. There are stories of people faking the w/c dependence and then when the doors open they get up and run. Despicable ploy if you ask me- but it worked for a few so some people are cautious of this in case it is someone doing that ploy. No one likes line crashers! (Not saying you are doing this- I don't get that idea- just giving the why's behind peoples loss of chivalry on that particular day.)
ajogg Posted November 20, 2011 Author Posted November 20, 2011 Thanks for the replies all. My fiancee sees a thing or two at Best Buy and we'll just have to look online. She thought about calling and asking if they help, but with the crowds already lining up at Best Buy it's doubtful we'll get help with the crazy crowds. She can't stand for long and has issues. I have issues with my knees as well. Thank you all once again for your replies. I hope you have a great Thanksgiving! P.S. Thanks Brad and everyone who created the site, it's a huge help this time of the year and all throughout the rest of the year as well.
tinkrbel Posted November 20, 2011 Posted November 20, 2011 I'll say BB associates are usually among the most helpful to find stuff on BF since there's so many of them but safety-wise I can't comment.

I have complained to corporate and the store manager and last year called the store before they opened and they didn't do anything. I wrote a letter to the newspaper but they called me and said that they don't print complaints about businesses. I guess someone has to get hurt there before they change anything. I want someone to video record it, it's just crazy!
tinkrbel Posted November 21, 2011 Posted November 21, 2011 I wonder if all Menards are that bad because the one here is exactly the same.Maybe try the local news? We have "Help me Howard" segment where they address stuff like this.
christina5704 Posted November 21, 2011 Posted November 21, 2011 The lines around here are crazy as well. I just had knee surgery and don't think there is anyway I would risk going out and possibly having my knee reinjured. I would just say call around to the stores where you want to go and see if they can help you out.
ajogg Posted November 21, 2011 Author Posted November 21, 2011 We've considered doing that, good ideas all. Thank you.
ajogg Posted November 21, 2011 Author Posted November 21, 2011 Well basically Best Buy told my fiancee "no help", that they'd have police, etc. Oh well.
nebraskaparkfan Posted November 21, 2011 Posted November 21, 2011 I will say that the one good thing about being in the midwest is because of the normally frigid temps on black friday. A lot of people shop in groups so when you are in line outside, you take turns sitting in the car and warming up. I have never really seen anyone get upset wtih this practice b/c you can tell that people are cycling through the line experience every 15 min or so. I've even seen strangers offer each other "car time" and let them get back in line. It's helpful when you have health problems that keep you from standing in line for a long time in the cold.
mf47960 Posted November 21, 2011 Posted November 21, 2011 My first Black Friday I was over 8 months pregnant with my oldest. My mother and I went to KB Toys to get some things for my soon to be daugther. The store was tiny... it was the year of the Furbies and let me tell you those people in there were SO rude pushing and shoving me and literally trapped me in the back of the store to get those stupid things! Finally my mother made her way to me and told me to get out of the store since it was so crazy and hot and she didn't want me to go into labor, but I have to say Black Friday crowds sometimes seem to be the rudest, but in the past year if I have been first at an item I will try and grab for people around me and they in turn will grab and throw things to me :)
Rebirth Posted November 22, 2011 Posted November 22, 2011 Too many nice people turn into mean and crazy ppl during this time. Some ppl are nice, some aren't and there are some ppl just don't take BS from anyone.
enoreeman Posted November 22, 2011 Posted November 22, 2011 With the total lack of decency on BF, I would advise even healthy people to stay home, the whole thing has degenerated into nothing resembling a good experience anymore, and with the even earlier opening times this year, it even cuts short the time spent with family on Thanksgiving day. Unless you want to descend into a level of behavior that is embarrassing when you look back in hindsight, I would say stay home and show the stores that we want some degree of civility brought back to BF.
leefamily23 Posted November 22, 2011 Posted November 22, 2011 I don't think I'd chance it. It gets crazy. I think there are the random people who didn't forget their manners, but they are far outnumbered by the rude ones.
