serenitey Posted November 12, 2011 Posted November 12, 2011 When does Target have the best deals on the digital SLR cameras? How much of a discount can I expect to find? I am looking mostly at older models as I do not need the latest and greatest models. Thank you!
catholicbride11 Posted November 12, 2011 Posted November 12, 2011 Black Friday isn't a good time to invest in a DSLR. The deals usually aren't very good and involve a bundle of things that really you don't need. What type of use will you be getting out of the camera? I'd suggest B&H (bhphotovideo.com), get a body only and then a 50 1.8 mm lens. Now if you are just getting it because you want a camera and don't plan on really investing time/money into honing your skills then buying a camera with the kit lens will do you just fine. If you plan on developing your skills and see where you can go with photography then save yourself the time in line on BF and money and shop at a store devoted to photgraphy such as bh or even a wolf or ritz. 50 1.8 mm is a prime lens ( no zoom so you have to move your body closer or farther from the subject) but it produces exceptional images. In a nutshell- Black friday is not a good time to buy a DSLR unless you want a bundle of things, but any money saved is eaten up by the "bundle" which you may not really need. Hope this all makes sense :)
serenitey Posted November 12, 2011 Author Posted November 12, 2011 Thank you Catholicbride11 for all of the great information! I will be buying a camera at Target, because I have a gift card for Target. I am a novice, but I am trying to hone my skills. I am planning on spending $1000 or so on a camera. I was thinking on just buying the body now and use the lens it come with (maybe investing in a lens, but I am unsure at this time). I have been looking at the Canon 60D Rebel for a start. Any thoughts on this camera? I see it has pretty good reviews. I see they are on sale now, but I am wondering if they will go on sale at a deeper discount later. Thanks again!
freesia39 Posted November 12, 2011 Posted November 12, 2011 The 60D is a mid level DSLR, if you are TRULY starting out, I'd look at the T3i, which is more than enough. The 50mm 1.8 lens runs about 100-120 on amazon. It's a GREAT lens for the price. The kit lens they give you is adequate, but I hardly ever use it because it's not... that... useful. It's just very basic. The camera will be on sale later... when the newer DSLRs come out. It doesn't drop that much. The stores usually try to bundle a lens, and I don't like the bundle lenses they offer - they are not that good.
catholicbride11 Posted November 13, 2011 Posted November 13, 2011 You don't need near $1,000 to start out. I second Freshia, 60D is a lot of camera. A beginner DSLR is the way to go. Even if you do really get into it and learn your craft it will be a long time before you outgrow it. Heck I started my business on a xsi : D. Good luck to you!
JennyWLS Posted November 19, 2011 Posted November 19, 2011 In March I picked up a Canon t1i for 30% off. Just about every store was phasing out the old and bringing in the new. It was by far the best deal I had seen on it and I had been watching for a good price drop for quite some time. If you can hold out, I would hold out. I know that Target and Meijer were both dropping prices like crazy and I was watching the forums here and when I saw a good in store clearance post, I raced out and picked it up stat!
