I'm celebrating thanksgiving with ten adults and two children. I'm fairly new to baking and I'm unsure how many pies to make. Three of the adults are men in their early twenties that eat quite a lot. Also, we like leftovers. Is four pies enough?

I would think that four should be plenty! I would thing that three men, early twenties would probably eat the equivalent of one and a half. And that's assuming that they don't get stuffed on everything before dessert and that they are staying for a long enough amount of time after dinner to get hungry for more dessert.

Are you making 4 different types of pie? My only concern would be if you, for example, only made one pumpkin pie and all 12 people wanted a piece. Then, you're not going to have any leftovers! But if you make one a pecan pie and only 2 people like pecan, you will have a lot of leftovers!

I think it would really depend on how much food you're making. We usually have at least 20 over and have more than enough with 3 pies/cakes because people fill up on turkey other stuff. We usually have lots left over. My mom usually makes a Cheesecake and either a pecan liquor pie of some sort or a pumpkin cake from Pillsbury and my aunt usually brings a plain pumpkin pie. There's always left over including usually the whole (or most of) the pumpkin pie.

I always make way to many desserts but we like leftovers too. I usually sent some home with everyone and try to make all my kids favorites.

Now for our family 4 pies would not be enough..lol, especially if you want leftovers. Are there going to be any other desserts?

If all you are fixing is pies I would say 5 or 6 pies. If the adult men eat like my husband and 2 teenage boys they can easily eat 1 pie in a sitting. And you said you had ten adults so I would say 1 pie for every 4 adults (so you can have leftovers). Alot of recipes make 2 pies anyway. So I would probably go ahead and make 6 pies (maybe 3 different kinds) or 4 pies and maybe another type dessert.

There are 3 adult men (who can put away some food), two teenage boys (who eat more than men..lol), a 10 year old boy, a 5 year old girl, me, my MIL, and SIL. I usually make one big dessert (oreo dirt cake). I usually also have a Hershey's chocolate pie, a pecan pie, and an apple pie. We usually also have some other dessert. We always want to have plenty of leftovers.

I would make more pies if that is the only dessert you are serving. If your are also having cookies, cakes, pastries etc, then 4 should be enough. I always go WAY overboard but every1 leaves happy with tons of leftovers =O)

Shoot, I guess I should start figuring out what desserts I want to make. lol I usually have a pumpkin pie & an apple pie. Pumpkin Rolls are my specialty; end up making a ton of these during the holidays.

I think I've decided to go with 5. My husband pointed out that we'll have guests over the weekend so the leftovers will definitely be helpful. I've decided to make pecan, chocolate cream, banana cream, and pumpkin cheesecake. The last one ill have to think about. Maybe peanutbutter or butterscotch toffee?

I only make one pumpkin at thanksgiving. We aren't a pie loving family. We hve my parents, my family, my sisters family. We have about 12 adults and several kids. My mom makes an angel food cake and lemon lush. We usually have lots of deserts left as the men don't eat much. It's usually just us women and the kids. At xmas, we make xmas salad which my grandma made all her life. She is 94 now, and me and my sister take turns. My mom still makes lemon lush and usually one other desert and we have lots left. The xmas salad is in a cake pan and is a jello, cream cheese salad type dish.

Lemon lush is as lemon pudding and cream cheese type layer with whipped cream on top and a cookie type crust. My mom puts pecans in half the crust. I don't like nuts, so it's half and half. We have had it for every holiday for many years. SHe made pistachio a few times and chocolate, but lemon everyone loves. It's a good holiday desert or potluck.

The christmas salad I posted the recipe in the holiday recipe contest. It is a bottom layer of lemon jello, real whipped cream, mini marshmallows and crushed pineapple. let it set in a cake pan and pour cherry jello on top. It's festive.

I looked up lemon lush and recipe I found looks delicious. There was another that had pecans or walnuts in the crust

We have 7 adults and 3 kids for dinner usually (3 of those adults are big eaters). Anyhow, there is usually 2 pumpkin pies, then 2-3 other desserts in addition. The pumpkin pies are huge too. My mother orders them and they serve between 10-12 nice size pieces.

It's funny because even though it seems my mother goes way overboard every year with the cooking (Thanksgiving is always hosted by her), my husband and I spend Wednesday before Thanksgiving making a smaller version of her Thanksgiving dinner so we have left overs here for the weekend. There just never seems to be that many at her place.
