boblabontefan Posted December 27, 2010 Posted December 27, 2010 A friend of mine went to Best Buy today to purchase a laptop. After paying for the laptop and getting into her car she realized they charged her for a PC Set-up and Restore CD for $99. They charged this to her without asking if she wanted it. Is this common practice for Best Buy to add this CD to your new computer/laptop purchase? I figured you can make your own set-up/restore CD once you have your laptop up and running.

I would go back and complain and demand a refund, but I would have definitely noticed that my total was significantly higher than it should have been...
mysschevous Posted December 27, 2010 Posted December 27, 2010 Tell her to take it back with the receipt and explain she didn't ask or approve of that service. It is common for them to do "performance" upgrades to the laptop to try to get the consumer to buy them. There was a study done on engadget I think , that showed their "performance upgrades" actually SLOWED the computer and made it worse. I would think she could get that $99 refunded. I know I went to buy a laptop about a year ago, and the laptop they had for the model I had, already had geek squad service done to it. I explained I didn't want that service, and they did not charge me for it.
boblabontefan Posted December 27, 2010 Author Posted December 27, 2010 She did go back and got this explanation.... because the laptop she purchased was the last one and was set-up to be their demo computer they charged her for that set-up. She took your advice (thanks!) and told them she didn't want this service and wasn't asked if she wanted it. They refunded her the money, but still gave her the set-up/restore disc. I wonder how often this happens to people and if they notice.
peppysfireball Posted December 27, 2010 Posted December 27, 2010 It should come with a restore disc anyway. I've never bought a computer that didn't and I've used each one several times. Even if I lost it, it only cost 19.99 to buy a new one.

You create them yourself. It is very easy to do.....I can't beieve BB would actually charge $99.00 to do that. Talk about a ripoff. Glad to hear that your friend got her money back.
jeninpa Posted January 3, 2011 Posted January 3, 2011 The newer laptops don't seem to come with them anymore and I have bought 7 laptops in the past 2yrs in 4 different brands! lol I like buying laptops online from Best Buy better than instore, no pressure to upgrade or listening to them tell you they will remove all the extra crap that will make your computer run slower, lol.
clevelandrocksandrolls Posted January 3, 2011 Posted January 3, 2011 VERY common with Best Buy. Very!
nirvana4all Posted January 3, 2011 Posted January 3, 2011 Sadly, they have come to this. It is common to go in and be just browsing so I can get my hands on a live model and hear them trying to upsell useless, unneeded, or super simple to do (i.e. backup cd) items for their computers for a way over-priced cost.
Guest bluecamel1913 Posted May 12, 2011 Posted May 12, 2011 Creating your own backup discs probably costs a dollar or two.
