I live 10 minutes from Ikea Long Island. I'd agree with i-by. Unless there's some outrageous deals wait it out or go towards closing on a weekday when there's usually less people. I don't think their furniture is all that anyways. I have a couch from them and the springs are broken on it so it kinda sucks now.

IKEA traditionally have some really crazy deals going on opening days only, that's why people are lining up since early morning.

what i can't understand is that they're opening another one near chicago although they already have one at schaumburg. these two are just about 30 miles apart. why so close together? it would make more sense if they open one near Wisconsin Dells or something like that, at least i'm sure my wife will like it more :D

They're opening another one (in Bolingbrook) because the Schaumburg store can't handle the massive volume of customers that they get. That way, they'll pretty much divide the Chicagoland Market - one in the NW 'burbs, and another one in the SW 'burbs.

They can't open one in the Dells area... can you imagine the uproar that would cause? :)

I agree with both of Ray and Frieked. No deals - don't go.

I've been to IKEA numerous times and I think I've bought a spoon. There's nothing there I want. The furniture feels very cheaply made.

i remember when the last new ikea opened, they had a FREE CHAIR (value: 99.00) for the first 100 people. i wanted to line up (cuz i kinda liked the chair, and it was... free.) but my bf thought that was nuts.

i was about to yell "stop calling san francisco frisco!" but then i saw it was in texas.

we have some ikea furniture, like a cheap couch that now houses my stuffed animals, and some tv stands, the dining table and dining chairs. it's cheap, which is what we cared about more at the time. we were poor college students... and now we're poor inbetweenies.

i love ikea hot dogs though... and cookies...mmmm... i have this spatula from ikea that's lasted way longer than i thought, a vegetable peeler, but the 3.00 frying pan died pretty quickly.

They are looking at opening one in SE Wisconsin.

"...The latest example is Ikea, the Swedish-based value-oriented home furnishings retailer. For years, southeastern Wisconsin residents have trekked south to visit Ikea's popular store in Schaumburg, Ill.

So many Wisconsin residents have made the trip that Ikea's management has taken notice. The retailer has hired a Milwaukee real estate brokerage to find a site in the area for an $80 million, 215,000-square-foot store."

The first adult ($2,500 in gift certificates) has been in line for about 3 weeks.

Wow, 3 weeks! How do you wait in line for 3 weeks??

With a very strong bladder, a good supply of Depends, and/or a friend or relative to split the gift certificate with. ;)

No holdsies! LOL I saw that happening on Black Friday and it was ok somewhat, but when you have been waiting in line in the cold for hours and someone has been sitting in their van all toasty warm, I call :bs:

Oh, no--definitely no leaving to go sit somewhere warm or sleep or whatever. I would be ok with two people sitting outside that whole time together, and one will make food runs or a bathroom break while the other stays, but there'd be no flat-out trading off.

And on Black Friday, dammit, if I'm freezing, *everyone* better be freezing.

I guess she wasn't in line as long as I thought.

Here's the story:

Woman camps outside Ikea for prize

Frisco: $2,500 will be hers as long as she stays put for a week

07:32 AM CDT on Thursday, July 28, 2005

By NANCY CHURNIN / The Dallas Morning News

FRISCO – The view isn't exactly a serene North Texas lake, unless you count the bright blue paint, but Victoria Carson-Barnes has pitched her tent anyway.

LARA SOLT/DMN

Victoria Carson-Barnes of Weatherford, ensconced in front of the Ikea store well ahead of its opening next Wednesday, said she plans to furnish her five kids' bedrooms with the $2,500. The 33-year-old mother of five from Weatherford has staked her claim to a $2,500 prize by being first in line for the opening of Ikea, the Swedish furniture store that opens next Wednesday at State Highway 121 and the Dallas North Tollway.

"I'm a stay-at-home mom, and I don't have too many opportunities to get $2,500 for furniture," Ms. Carson-Barnes said. She hopes to use the credit to furnish the bedrooms of her kids, who range in age from 6 to 15. "Also, at Ikea, I can stretch that money further than I can anywhere else."

She's waiting out the hours in blistering heat and intermittent rain with some degree of comfort, at least: She is reclining in one of the $79 Poäng armchairs awarded to the first 100 people in line.

As of Wednesday, she was the only person in line, stepping away for no more than 10 minutes at a time to take bathroom breaks. According to the rules, that's as long as she can leave without losing her place.

Official site: Ikea Frisco

Ms. Carson-Barnes said she didn't know much about Ikea when she received a catalog in the mail but was immediately impressed by the store's extensive inventory, low prices and opening-day freebies. She and her husband, Clyde, held a family meeting to discuss whether it was worth it. They circled the spot, looking for other campers, hardly daring to believe they could be first.

Her husband has helped her manage the wait, Ms. Carson-Barnes said. He set her up with a combination television/DVD player atop a mini refrigerator. He replenishes her food and brings her water and fresh clothes daily. The folks at Ikea also have done what they can to make it more comfortable for her. They gave her a footstool and a T-shirt.

Ms. Carson-Barnes said she doesn't mind spending her days and nights in front of Ikea. She considers it a vacation from dishes and laundry. Besides, she added, her kids think it's pretty cool.

"My 6-year-old asked me, 'Can I have princess stuff in my bedroom?' They've already figured out how to spend all the money – and then some."

THIS is SO strange! I click on the link for the Billy bookcase at Ikea and for a split second the price is $59.99 before changing to $79.99.

Anyone else seeing this?

Edit:

Everytime I click "refresh" I see it! WTH?

I see it too. It's probably something with the javascript code behind the drop-down box. The white bookcase is $59.99; the rest is $79.99. Best guess...

I noticed the same thing. The white bookcase appears to be $59.99 and the rest $79.99. Looks like it changes quickly from the white to the birch veneer.

if it's true then wow, the schaumburg one must have been really crazy when it first opened. after that they opened one up in minneapolis, and one more near chicago is opening in a couple of months, and in a couple of years, this one.
