For people who were interested in the wi-drive but did not get the $25 off $75 coupon, here is a 25% off from staples that should work on the wi-drive... - http://www.staples.com/office/supplies/StaplesSearch?searchkey=wi-drive&storeId=10001&catalogId=10051&langId=-1&fromUrl=home - http://reg.e.staples.com/c/s/tagfrm/hBQrIoHB7SHGCB8vTXSCYRzCTrK/coupon.html?PID=3640155&COUPON_1=42171&CID=AFF%253A3640155%253A3640155%253A10422268&n=4200&cm_mmc=CJ-_-3640155-_-3640155-_-10422268&email=om&SID=skim115X178Xfe43bfaea7522e5a1a7f0c3fc78dec6a&AID=10422268&storeId=10001

I think it would be decent, but for really good OpenGL (which is what Minecraft uses to draw the screens), you'd want to add a discreet video card. With this system, you can do that since there is an available PCIe slot. If you are looking for a turnkey solution, one of the trinity boxes would run Minecraft better.

The Lenovo i5 on p3 of the staples ad is not excluded. For $400, that's an AMAZING computer. I just got my price adjusted (I thought it was a good deal at $459).

I like the toshiba too, but, other than price -- maybe including price -- the biggest difference between the two is the screen size. Besides giving you more to look at, the toshiba's bigger screen will make the computer heavier and reduce battery life. If you are going to use the laptop as a 'portable desktop' the bigger screen will be a plus, but if you plan to balance the laptop on your knees in the park, the 15" might be easier to handle and will likely hold a charge longer.

Just curious -- who is they?

Blu-ray Player w/ Built in WiFi Question - Will it play Netflix?
len_mullen replied to shoptillidrop2's topic in 2012
that has nothing to do with wifi. if it will play netflix, it should say so in the specs. if you are not sure, post the model here. -
Mine is. I don't think that will be the most popular doorbuster. It's kind of big and heavy to lug around. The kids seem to like the 14" models. Most people lean towards intel. Of the laptops on the cover of the ad, I think this is the only one that doesn't have an 'at least x per store' note. Either they have a lot of these or than have none. We can figure that out Friday afternoon, I guess.

For you, I really like this... Staples - Lenovo Desktop w/ Intel Core i5, 8GB RAM, 1 TB HDD $449.99 That's what I bought for myself and I have similar objectives. Here's why I like it... - case has accomodations for two additional disks - PCIe slot for improved graphics if appropriate, though HD 4000 is capable out of the box - HDMI connector for second display - Fast CPU with upgrade path to i7 - 7200rpm 1t disk - Quad core for multitasking - 8g of RAM It's all packed in a really nice case that is spacious without taking up a lot of room. I have three monitors on my desk. I use a Mygica USB 2.0 to HDMI DVI VGA 1080P DisplayLink Adapter to connect the third screen. I use a couple of these to extend my laptop at work. They run from $30-$40 shipped most of the time.
-
I would definately go with a 17" model. I really like that HP at $400.
-
For the kindle, hit radio shack. You get $10 back per $50 spent, so add a paperclip to get to $200 and you get $40 back to spend on case, batteries, whatever.

How are dad's eyes? Will he be using this on the run or are you looking for a 'portable desktop'? For old farts like me, this may be more fun... Staples: HP 17.3" Laptop w/ AMD A8 Quad-Core, 6GB RAM, 500GB HDD (G7-2243US) $399.99

The i15R-2105sLV is a great laptop, but what I said in the desktop thread applies more with a laptop since you cannot upgrade the gpu -- if you are going to play games, you will find the trinity chips are a better choice. This lappy from the Staples BF ad for $400 might be a better choice assuming the 17" screen is not too much... Item: 100375 Model: B5Z58UA#ABA HP Pavilion g7-2243us offers way more than just fun and games! Brace yourself -- Minecraft is not light gaming. It uses OpenGL to create the cool effects. OpenGL is not directly supported these days, so even the integrated graphics of an ivy bridge i7 only make the game playable... http://images.anandtech.com/graphs/graph6332/50163.png It's easy to see that an A8-5x00 or an A10-5x00would be a better choice for you assuming you do not want to install a discrete GPU... If you have a Discover card, use that for everything. Stores like Best Buy, Walmart, and Staples (there are hundreds of merchants) offer 5% or more cash back on each purchase that starts at shopdiscover.com. You can use this cash to pay your bill or purchase discounted gift cards. I use mine to buy Staples $25 gift cards for $20. When you spend these at Staples, it's getting 20% off their best sales. Sign up for Staples Rewards. It's free and members get $2 per ink or toner cart recycled (up to ten/month), discounts on paper and ink, plus free after rewards paper, batteries, and other stuff. Rewards can be spent like cash at Staples. Often, you can monetize these by spending them on free after rebate items. It's not uncommon for them to offer some software as a download free after rebate. So you get what you paid for, plus the free after rewards stuff, plus the software, plus a gift card or rebate worth more than you could have cashed out at Discover. With all of this, it's not difficult to spend $1k in a year. When this happens, you are a premier member. Premier members get free shipping plus can recycle up to twenty carts per month and have up to six months to spend rewards. You should also buy an hp printer because it's pretty common to get double or triple recycle rewards when you purchase some amount of ink when you recycle. Eventually, you get into this vortex in which ink, paper, and computers are free. Oh, and you get the great $25 off $75 coupons. Isn't that why we are all here?

For starters, any Ivy Bridge, Sandy Bridge, or Trinity based system would do the job. If you want to mve your old disk to a new machine, you have some research to do. First, you will have to determine if the old disk is PATA or SATA and make sure the new computer has the appropriate controller. I recommend you abandon the old disk in favor of an external, usb disk. It will be easy to move your files from the old machine to the new (and any future) computer this way and you will not need to worry about what is in the case. If you really want to recycle that disk, make sure your new computer has bays for additional drives. The Lenovos tend to while most of the others do not. Here are some of the desktops in the ads. I highlighted the ones that would make sense for you knowing as little as I do about you or how you use computers. Good luck!
