Day 2...

I realize in the countries of the British Commonwealth, today is Boxing Day, but it is also the first day of Kwanzaa and, for Western Christian faiths, the First Day of the 12 Days of Christmas, observed between now and Epiphany on January 6th. Eastern Christian faiths observe Christmas on January 7th, followed by Epiphany 12 Days later on January 19th. At least, that is how this Jew understands it So, if you will indulge me... First principal of Kwanzaa, begun in 1966 in celebration of African American identity and culture. And, for a bit of fun...

Happy, Joyful and Merry Christmas everyone! With this, as I said above, now it's Christmas...

Unwrapped the roast from its aging towels and spread the herb and garlic seasoning over it. Now it will sit uncovered in the refrigerator until I pull it to take the chill off before roasting in a low oven.

Oh. This is lovely!

I have two songs that I need to hear for it to be Christmas, although I don't believe this one is meant to be a Christmas song specifically. Growing up in the southeast US of A, there is a supermarket chain who ran a seasonal commercial every year, starting at least in my teens and continuing many years later. The commercial portrayed a young family traveling for the holidays via train, with cuts to the hosting family members preparing a holiday feast with items supposedly bought at that grocery chain. There is no dialogue, just Pat Metheny Group's Last Train Home playing as the soundtrack. For me, Christmas has arrived when I hear that tune. I will occasionally hear the radio edit of this one on the rare times I listen to a radio station which plays holiday music 24/7 during the season. But, this full length 6+ minute long version is never played; in fact, the only place I know of to hear it is this specific YouTube video. For me, the inclusion of the skit paying tribute to The Christmas Truce of 1914 during WWI at the very start of the track takes it way out of just a novelty Christmas tune for me.

Just to be clear, try what again? The invite link? Restarting? Or deleting and reinstalling the app (which I haven't done yet)?
-
Already tried that when it first happened, before posting in the discord thread and messaging Brad. All it did was take me to Google Play store to reinstall, even though the button to reinstall says Installed. What's strange is I've had no response from Brad anywhere, and he's usually very prompt in responding to messages and posts. I don't know if he's taking some down time for the holiday. But, I'll wait to delete and reinstall the app until I do hear from him, as everything else on it is working fine.

I've restarted both my phone and laptop. It's missing from both devices.
-
hmm... Maybe I should delete and reinstall the app. But all of the other channels I joined are still there. Strange.
-
Is anyone else having issues with the discord? The channel disappeared from my app. I posted both in the thread about the discord and messaged Brad, but have not received any response.

What a feast!

I am not changing my planned menu at this point, but I did realize this year Christmas falls on Shabbos. Many years ago in the bigger cities where Jewish immigrants settled, Chinese restaurants tended to be the only places open on Christmas. So the tradition, or minhag, which for many can become as important as a mitzvah, or commandment, of eating Chinese food on Christmas came to be. This meme is a humorous look at the minhag. In the spirit of the Chinese food on Christmas minhag, I offer this recipe. Scallion Pancake Challah

The channel has disappeared from my list of channels on discord. Is anyone else having an issue?

It sounds wonderful! Please let us know how it all comes out. Ah, I forgot to mention the home made au jus, which I plan to make tomorrow. It calls for three pounds of oxtail, but at $12.49/lb that's a bit steep for me. Last year I substituted beef shank cuts, which worked fine for the au jus and at $4.99/lb is much more within my budget.

I generally do Jewish Appetizing with seven different offerings for Christmas Eve. Here on the Eastside of Seattle, the most reliable source tends to be Whole Foods for the various fish: Belly Lox Nova Lox Smoked Whitefish Smoked Sable Matjes Herring Herring in Cream Sauce Kippers and Eggs Standard accompaniment of bagels, bialys, lettuce, tomato, cucumbers, sliced onion and various cream cheese. My two bone standing rib roast is out of the packaging wrapped in a flour sack towel to "dry age" for five days before I smear it with the fresh rosemary, thyme and garlic paste on Christmas Eve to season overnight. I'll buy the ingredients for the Oxtail and Wine au jus tomorrow and make that ahead. No Yorkshire pudding this year; we all decided we would rather have homemade garlic mashed potatoes. We haven't decided on a vegetable yet. I would love to do carrot soufflé, but with the potatoes that may be too much starch. I'll probably save it for Passover. I'm not planning on desserts; there's been far too many sweets in the schools I've been subbing in the past few weeks. I won't turn down anything my roommates decide to do, though. So, we may wind up with a homemade pumpkin pie.
