You got a great deal. What is the difference between the professional one and the heavy duty one besides the 6qt/5qt difference. It is a huge price jump so I was curious.
325 vs. 475 power. I was reading on the KitchenAid forums and a lot of the people who are cake bakers (professional) are just using the heavy duty one. I had asked my cousin and he said that unless you're making huge, heavy recipes (very heavy bread doughs in double and triple batches) then the one I got is perfectly fine. He cooks A LOT and wouldn't even need the Professional. I'm not kidding when I say my mom and grandma used theirs a lot. It was used several times a week and my grandma made homemade bread and all that. It still works. Sooo, unless you need the 6qt. bowl, I'd go with the 5qt.
HOWEVER, Sam's, Costco, etc. have their own proprietary model and it's a 5qt bowl but has the power of the professional and also comes with the spiral dough hook, which can only be used on models that it originally comes with. This wasn't a big deal for me so I didn't go with the $249 model from Costco. It just wasn't worth the extra $90 for me. It's normally $269 but right now there's a $20 instant coupon.

I also usually check www.cheaptickets.com . I've found cheap flights on there a few times. I often use Delta to Florida because there are direct flights from here and the price can beat Southwest a lot of the time. I really liked Delta Song with the tv's in the seats. It really helped to entertain the kids. I'm not sure if they went out of business, but they don't fly out of our local airports any more. I did check regular Delta for a flight around Thanksgiving and found great prices. Don't limit yourself to one particular airline unless you have a personal issue why you would want to.

I went for the heavy duty because it's something I plan to pass down to my children (likely the daughter who's in my belly) someday. Some of the differences between the Classic and the Heavy Duty: More powerful motor, adjustable bowl vs. tilt head, narrow bowl vs. wide bowl. That's all I can really think of. I could have probably saved $20 or so by going with the Classic, but I consider this a once in a lifetime purchase (hopefully!) so I wanted to get the best one I could afford and possibly ever need. My friend is a big bread maker and uses the Artisan which, according to the people on the KitchenAid forums, is not quite as good as the one I got. I don't think, honestly, that I'd notice much difference at this point. I can say that it made a HUGE difference when making dough and I also liked it because it brought back memories of the kitchen with my mom and my grandma when I was little. They both had white and I think white is classic, so I got white. :)
As I posted earlier, my grandma's is about 75 years old and still going strong, with pretty heavy use throughout its lifetime. What I really look forward to the most about this mixer is the memories it can help me make with my kids. I want to let them add the flour to the cookie dough just like I did when I was little. :)
My friend with the Artisan has a black one and wants a quote to get flames painted on it, lol. She had decals on it but they're wearing off so I will be asking my good friend how much to paint it in his shop, lol. Now that's a domestic for you! (I'll be happy if I don't get mine completely scratched up, lol.)

Kayakmom, did you get the Kitchen aid mixer and do you like it?
Yep, I got it and I really like it! I posted on the offline deals thread that with the extra 15% off at Kohl's, it was $161.49. It is VERY powerful. In fact, it makes that mixing part so much fun that the actual baking now seems like a big chore, lol. Too bad I couldn't find someone to share services with, hehe. I'll mix and you bake! Now there's a deal.
I did use my dough straight out of the fridge and noticed one thing. It's much easier (and less sticky) to drop it on the sheets when it's cold. As I got to later batches and it warmed, it was getting really sticky and making a mess on me.
I tried this neat recipe I found online for Amish Chocolate Chip Cookies but I made them with butterscotch chips. My hubby and sons LOVED them! I didn't feel like dragging out the shortening so I just used butter and the consistency of the cookies was really quite different. It was almost like making up a thick frosting. The cookies were very light (almost white) and looked kind of neat with the butterscotch chips in there. The recipe is here: http://www.cdkitchen.com/recipes/recs/334/AmishChocolateChipCookies64160.shtml . I also chose this recipe because I was getting low on brown sugar and it didn't require any (sweet hubby picked me up more, along with oatmeal, on his way home). Oh yeah, I also doubled this recipe and it made about the same amount as a batch of Toll House.
It took me over four hours just to bake the doughs that I made in about 1/2 hour-45 minutes, lol. I definitely still have to make oatmeal and oatmeal raisin. I'm not sure what else I'll have time for. I need to give out my first batch tomorrow, so those will probably just go with what I've got so far.

I remember reading the thread. I specifically remember that someone said they passed on the AOL $250 off deal and just paid the price for it.

Yep, for sure. You can even freeze it if you want. Sometimes (when I'm ambitious) I make it in advance and freeze it so that I can just bake later. Last night I made 2 kinds before I blew up the hand mixer and this morning 3 more kinds after buying my new stand mixer. They're all sitting in the refrigerator because my back is killing me! Hopefully I can get back to them this afternoon.
One thing though... I have noticed that baking them cold tends to change the consistency/baking time just a little bit. I was debating whether I should bring the dough back to room temp before baking. Anyone have any ideas about that?

I called my cousin's wife while I was unpacking it and she's going to go and get him one. She said that just last night he was whining that all he wants is a KitchenAid and a lawn tractor, lol. He's the one I called last night to ask which model I should buy, so I know he's going to be both surprised and excited! I, on the other hand, am not very domestic so I'm just happy I got a good price.
The cheapest I had found these was refurbished on Amazon for $159.99, so for $2 more they're brand new.

Some of you may have read in another thread that I blew up my umpteenth hand mixer making cookies last night. I figured I'd just go and buy a KitchenAid because this is getting rediculous. Kohl's had the 5qt. Heavy Duty Stand Mixer with adjustable bowl on the back cover of the flyer for $199.99 plus a $10 gift card by mail. Regular retail is $299 for this model.
I went there this morning to get one and decided to apply for the Kohl's card to get the 15% off when I got to the register. It ended up ringing up for $189.99, so with the 15% off it was only $161.49 + 9.69 (tax) = $171.18 and I got to bring it home today! I'm pretty pleased.
Hopefully one of my children will be pleased when I pass it down, lol. My mom had bought one but gave it to my sister when she inherited my grandma's KitchenAid from the 1930's. We used that thing A LOT when I was little and it still works perfectly! My mom said that she broke one prong on the whisk and the cord is starting to fray, but not bad for about 75 years of service!

Ours around here is pretty junky. I must say, however, that I bought a decent rug in there. They also do have some brand name toys, so if you don't mind wading through the junk you might find some good deals. I haven't been there in a long time (probably a year) because I'm not keen on wading through the junk and there are many other choices here, but if there's something you want there, it's probably worth it. DO NOT buy DVDs there. I bought some a while back and they did not work. I believe they were pirated.

I usually tape them to the pantry door in the kitchen, but so far they're just in a pile. I'm just so behind on those little details this year. Oh well, priorities I guess! At least we got the tree up last night, which was a task in itself, because ds4 says that you're not supposed to put the tree up until Santa is coming. I'm not sure if he's convinced that it's ok to put it up, but we went ahead and put it up anyway!

unfortunately i still have quite a ways to go...my bad back flares up when i wrap so i have to do a little at a time..ive mostly wrapped individual gifts (like for people who are only getting one gift) but a lot of people are getting 3 or 4 things each
I know that feeling! I thought I'd be in bad shape this year being pregnant, but I felt fine while I was doing it. It wasn't until the next morning that I couldn't stand up straight, lol. I guess eight hours of wrapping will do that to you.
-
All of the Santa gifts are wrapped and black bagged for each of my sons. Ds4 was definitely harder, as he had a lot larger sized stuff. Ds9, of course, had the more expensive stuff.
I also wrapped all of the stuff for other people, the kids from us, and the grab bag gift, etc. I still have a few odds and ends to wrap, but what I didn't wrap so far fits in one grocery store bag, so I'm good! Now baking, on the other hand... I blew up yet another hand mixer last night so I'm resolved to go and buy a KitchenAid this morning. I know I could save about $20 or so if I waited to order on Amazon, but I need to get these cookies DONE so I'm going to suck it up. I guess I certainly saved enough this year to justify it but it still hurts, lol.

I went to Kohl's on BF and there were no more carts left by 5:01am. I balanced this huge mountain of toys and people kept helping me put stuff back on the pile as I was trying to walk to the register, lol. The manager was standing near the front of the store and saw me, so he came to my rescue. He took a bunch of the stuff and carried it to the first register and they checked me right out. Although I did find a couple of items cheaper (GeoTrax Roundhouse is $9.99 this week at TRU and I paid about $13.99), I'm very happy with my purchase and my experiences there. I got some hard to find GeoTrax pieces along with a bunch of other neat iteams and spent only $87 for the whole thing because everything was 50% off. I definitely will continue to shop at Kohl's.
I also do a lot of clothes shopping for my kids there because they have GREAT clearance sales!!! I love the additional 50 or 70% off clearance items sales they run.

I can't remember if it was the first Christmas present I bought online, but certainly the most important, lol. When my ds9 was in Kindergarten (he's in 4th now) he decided that he really, really wanted these Construx that they had in his classroom. Well, lo and behold, they stopped manufacturing those things in about 1986! Needless to say, I went on ebay and found him two mint sets of them. The funny thing is, he played with them some and still had them in his closet. He's now at that age where he's teetering on believing. (I thought we'd lost him.) BUT...he was playing with those Construx the other day with his brother and I commented how amazing it was that Santa had gotten him those toys because they hadn't been made in 20 years!!!! He was like huh? I explained to him and said that maybe Santa had some sitting around in one of his warehouses or something. Well, after that he came down and asked me if I could email Santa because he wanted to change his list, lol. I think I've got the kid thoroughly confused! Hehe.
I've had plenty of good buys over the years since, but nothing as good as being able to get the one thing that my son asked for from Santa. :)
Oh yeah! Another great find was some white Sorel pack boots that I wore to my wedding. (I was married on a mountain in January.) I ordered them from the comfy chair at my mom's house in Florida, lol. They just happened to be my size and brand new and arrived at my home the day after I did.
Being able to find the obscure seems to be the best thing about online shopping for me. :)

My hubby said that if there's a Granger near you, you might want to check there. He said there is one in almost every state. He said that all inverters are basically the same but make sure it has an external fuse on it for easy changing. The higher the wattage, the better the inverter, because you can run more than one thing. He said if it won't work in the cigarette lighter, it normally won't work on the battery because the battery is likely dead. Also, if it is plug-in only, you can buy an adaptor with the clip to hook it to the battery for a few bucks at Radio Shack.

The order I made on the 10th looks like it will arrive to my mom on Monday, which is a good thing! The other order (for me) that I had to redo on the 12th gave billing info on the 14th but still has not even been checked in to UPS yet! I'm glad it's not the other way around. I think I'll probably get my robe by Friday and I hope I do because I ended up buying hubby a robe and had already gotten some for the kids. It would be nice to have everyone with a new robe. I figured, since I am pregnant and it will only be necessary for a short time, this was a great buy and I'm hoping it will fit over my belly until March, lol. I have yet to see any maternity robes, and especially at this price!
-
If you are ordering for Christmas, you might want to consider expedited shipping. I ordered on the 10th but they screwed up and for some reason cancelled one of my two orders. I noticed that on the 12th and then called them to redo the order. They had no clue why they cancelled it.
Anyway, both orders are scheduled for delivery on December 23rd. I was a little aggravated but I'll be fine as long as my mom gets her gift on time!

It depends on the year. Last year the dragons got a stand for their tank, the hamster got some new toys, and the dog a new bed. We really kind of needed those things, so I just left them for the pets, lol.
This year I didn't buy any pet presents. Ds9 and ds4 went to the school holiday sale tonight at a local discount store and they said they bought the dog a new water bowl and food bowl. I gave them $20 and hubby drove them there. They said they got something for me, something for hubby, and something for the dog and gave us back $4.50 in change, lol. Oh yeah, and of course they got themselves each something little, too.
-
I just called 3 local WalMart stores and they all said basically the same thing. It goes by last name and they start tonight putting the stuff back on the shelves overnight for the first batch from the beginning of the alphabet at two of them and the other one said they're not putting it back out until Friday overnight so Saturday morning would be the time to get there. That store only had 2 days worth of pickups, but the others are divided over 3 days.

I'll ask my hubby and get back to you. He always has one in his work van and even got me one for the car. I LOVE IT! I didn't see the point of it at first, but now I certainly do! It's really nice to be able to recharge things (laptops, cameras, etc.) and also to plug things in.
-
When I first read this I must admit that I was hoping my kids are like that when they grow up, too! hehe
Actually, I can't complain this year. I doubt I'll have much in the way of surprises, but hubby insisted that I order my new laptop and the camera I've really been wanting, so my gifts added up to more than everyone else's put together. That's a very rare occasion! Usually he'll take the kids out to get me some pj's or something, lol. I guess he's making up for a few years. I'm not going to complain about it!
Mark, I think your gift choices speak volumes about how much you love and appreciate your mom. :)

I just made two major purchases at Costco and their return policy was definitely one of the big deciding factors to purchase there, in addition to the price. I signed up for a membership just to buy those two things even though Costco is pretty far from my house.

Woohoo!!! Great job on finding the deals!

Hubby and I had to go do a training a few weeks ago and he was teaching a class and needed some rope. We ran into KMart since it was near the school where we were teaching. I agree with what everyone else has said here about the quality of both the store and the service. The one thing that we did find that was cute was an igloo ornament for $2.79. I had hoped to find some things for the kids (sweaters mainly..flyer had said they were on sale) but there was barely any selection and everything seemed very low quality. Basically we left with the rope and the igloo, lol.
