  1. Went through the ad. Disappointing as there's some items which are good buys, but nothing out of the norm from any regular sale. I see where one of their front page items is a Toshiba laptop, a very similar laptop to one Best Buy has today for the same price.

The one at Best Buy for $399 has 4GB ram; the one at Office Depot for the same price on BF has 6GB.
  2. Mine was 10 off 25........

That's the only one I ever get in my market, even when JCP customers in other parts of the country get the $10 off $10. Those $10 off $10 in-store JCP coupons are only sent to designated geographical and demographical areas and unfortunately for me my JCP market is almost always slated to get only the $10 off $25. I guess that's the price you and I have two pay for living in markets having the #1 teams in the AFC and NFC! LOL! :D
  3. OK so I'm now thinking about the Acer Aspire (Dual Core 4GB/320GB), it looks like Office Depot and Radio Shack are offering the same one, but it is cheaper at OD (379.99), but if I can get from Radio Shack on line w/free shipping and the coupon, it might work out better and free up my BF for other shopping opportunities.

A guy at work told me he got through college with his $500 Acer and he's an engineer so I'm thinking this will work well for a 10yr old!

It will be more than good; a 10yr old doesn't even need 4GB RAM and a 320GB drive. The $249 Acer at Best Buy this week would've been fine for a 10yr old.
  4. Not thrilled with BB ad! I thought that the consensus was that there would be $99 netbooks this year. Well, I have not seen one yet. I did not even see a regular priced netbook on the ad. It just does not seem that the sales are that great. Nothing jumps out at me. Lots of games & movies, but not worth my time! How sad!

$99 netbooks wasn't any kind of consensus; it was wishful thinking on some people's part.
  5. I wouldn't get too fixated on trying to stay with XP. The machines in our house are all on Win 7 now. One is fast no matter what's run on it....i7 920 @ 4GHz, X58 chipset motherboard, 6GB RAM, etc., etc.....and was fast with Vista Ultimate and is even quicker with Win 7 Ultimate, bot 64-bit OS's.

But the other is a more ordinary box....C2D E8200, Gigabyte 965 chipset mb, 4GB RAM, 3870 video card, 500GB hd......and the move to Win 7 made the machine much more responsive than it was while operating on XP Pro. This machine dual boots XP and Win 7, and the responsiveness when running Win 7 has made my wife (it's her machine) completely give up the XP installation. I did the install purposely with a dual boot option because I didn't know which she'd want to keep, XP or 7, and the XP is now history.

So, don't irrationally dismiss Win 7 just because a few still cling to the creaking old XP. Instead, go to a store and play with a computer with it installed, or better yet, find a friend with it installed and use his/her computer for a bit. You may be surprised that Win 7 isn't quite the devil as some portray.

I would hardly call either of the two machines you describe an "ordinary box". Their specs indicate they should be able to handle W7 with ease, as you stated they have. I would think the typical "ordinary box" for most consumers is probably two to five years old with 2GR RAM or less, single or dual processor (not core2duo), and integrated graphics. It's on those older underpowered machines that XP performs well and the average person might not see any improvement from W7 (if their hardware can even support it).
  6. Oh yes you were. Thank you. Well I bought the one at BB online for $430 and picking it up at the store (when I return the $250 one ;) ). After I got home yesterday with the one for $250 I talked with DH and we decided to get a better laptop that might last us a little longer. So figuring the one at Staples for BF and the one at BB where pretty much the same I spent the extra $30 NOT to stand out in the freezing cold for hours! ;)

The extra $180 will get you better specs (which is great if you need them), but it's not going to ensure that the laptop will last any longer than the $250 one. In my experience the primary factor in determining how long a laptop will last is the user (or users) and the way it is used and maintained, not the money spent on it.
  7.

Plus, it wouldn't be too expensive to purchase a 6 or 9 cell battery replacement if needed and have the 3 cell as backup if someone needed it for lengthy periods over 3 hours.

Have you priced brand new, name brand OEM 6 and 9-cell batteries lately? Some sell for even more than the $150 price of the netbook, so I'm confused as to your definition of not too expensive.
  8. Just a note on the WM HP's for $298, they have a 6 cell battery. What this means is that you aren't ever going to get good battery life out of it & if you want things on more than just minimum performance (screen brightness, graphics, etc.) then you most likely will get a max of an hour or 2 out of it. I have an HP now that I'm hoping to upgrade at Best Buy this year that has a 12 cell battery & I love it. The 6 cell is what most of the netbooks have in them if that gives you an idea of their size.

BTW: I'm no computer expert, this is research I've been doing for myself in looking to buy a laptop & a netbook on BF this year & is just what I've come across. Please feel free to add on if I'm wrong on something! :)

Sure, a 9-cell or 12-cell battery will give you better battery life, but I doubt you can find a laptop for $298 that has either one. Just about every sub-$400 laptop will have a 6-cell unless you 're willing to pay extra for a larger battery. A 6-cell battery will usually get you between two and three hours (depending on your power settings) of unplugged use, which is fine for most people looking for a budget laptop.
