Well, I can honestly say... the turner classic movies are a hit with the 80 year old set! Mom found them, and she is thrilled! And she is NOT waiting for Christmas to watch them. (She also has 4 new sweaters and two shirts she is looking forward to wearing over the holidays.) I need to start a new thread....Anyone got any ideas on how to keep the old people out of the Christmas presents?!?!? Remember, they are old and they break easy so the methods need to be gentle. Oh! And psychological warfare does not work...Mom's excuse is that she is 80 now, she could go at any time... might not be here for Christmas so she wants to enjoy everything now.

(Jim Carrey) The Majestic. My seniors went bonkers over that when it came out and it's been out long enough that it should be in the $5 bin. Amazon had several 4 pack movies from Turner classic movies for $11.99. I bought 7 different 4 packs for my folks (80 yr old.) Comedy, Hitchcock, musicals, Christmas etc. Works out to $3 a movie for some great classics http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_0_18?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=tcm+movie+classics&sprefix=tcm+movie+classics#%2Fref%3Dnb_sb_noss%3Furl%3Dsearch-alias%253Daps%26field-keywords%3Dtcm%2B%2Bgreatest%2Bmovie%2Bclassic%26rh%3Di%253Aaps%252Ck%253Atcm%2B%2Bgreatest%2Bmovie%2Bclassic&enc=1 My folks also remember and love the old nature/travel type films. I got them Planet earth and Disney's True Adventure sets this year. (A little more pricey then the $5 bin but if you look around you can find them reasonably sale priced or used.)

I am disappointed too. Maybe it's because we are so fortunate to have to have so much that nothing is catching my (or so many other's) eyes. I am not seeing anything worth getting up early and freezing my bucket off either. (And I *like* the thrill of a knock down, dragged out..... er .....thrill of victory when you arrive with your item, bruised and with a tooth or two missing at the checkout!) So many of the items are available over the internet anyways. ::sigh:: No point in going out. What ever happened to all those "Free after rebate" deals? Used to get spindles of blank cd's for the computer etc. I used to fill out rebate forms on BF afternoon. And what about those special pooh beanie's at the Disney store? First 200 only. Penney's is doing their free Mickey Mouse snowglobe (yay) But Target, a few years, ago gave out scratch off cards that gave early shoppers a free limited edition matchbox car OR to a lucky few, a free Izone polaroid camera. (I won two of those cameras before I finally won a little car....LOL.) I remember making a run through Kohl's for a $49 portable DVD player few years ago. Geeks has them this weekend for $42 or $43. Sears and Target wants me to run for one this year for $49 (Radio Shack $59!!) $49?!? Make it $29 this year and I'll get up early and run for that portable dvd player. My local mall used to give out a free (paper) shopping bag to all the early shoppers. Lots of coupons etc. inside and several bags had surprise gift certificate for the lucky shopper. ($10 and up). And I used to camp out a Walmart for those $5 hot wheel sets. (Built a small village in about 3 years. ) And I am missing my 99 cent 64 Crayola crayons (Come on Walgreen's! You can still add it!) No, I was never one to camp out for the really big stuff....but the medium and little stuff is just not enticing me to get up early this year either. (And let's face it retailers, it's all those impulse buys we pick up while we are waiting in that long line through your store that gets you in the black!) I guess you'll have to add me to the "Scrooge" shopping group this year.....sleeping in!

Geeks.com 72 hours Black Friday Early Deals
Reinholt1 replied to simplydivine's topic in Online Hot Deals
I have ordered from them off and on several times over the last few years. Never had a problem. I have purchased several refurbished items from them including a 14 megapixal Kodak camera, a small lcd TV and a spare cd-rom/dvd drive (usb) All items are still working perfectly. Not a scratch on them when they arrived. They are a good place to shop. -

How about A Christmas Carol the Disney remake last year with Jim Carey? Or Eloise at Christmas Time....Julie Andrews is always popular.

Sears is SOOOoooo easy it is almost not even fun anymore. They often match the good prices on video cameras etc. (The medium range door busters.) Not only can you go pretty much when they open, but last year, I was able to order every doorbuster I wanted from Sears ONLINE before I left for BF shopping and marked them all for in-store pick up. Went to my Sears after I was done making the rounds and a nice man in customer pick up handed them all to me when I swiped my credit card to verify it was me. Now I am not into the hard core waiting. (Although the boy scout in me says 3-4 days...piece of cake.) I have yet to see anything I want on the "hard core lists". I go after the medium and smaller doorbuster deals and I have ALWAYS gotten 100% of my shopping list with that strategy. (Usually 7-10 stores, done by 10 am ish) My strategy suggestions are: 1) have a good game plan - know in what order you need to hit your stores. (They all don't open at the same time.) 2) dress warm....even 2-3 hours wait can be cold. Take the pages of the circular(s) with you. It can be handy, especially if you have to reference/argue something. 3) Have a back up plan (2nd location) if something you really wanted gets snagged before you get one. (3 years ago my Kohl's placed all their dvd players out of sight but right by one door. The people that picked that door got one. The rest of us ran through the entire store from the far door and almost all of us missed them. (I got one heh heh heh. Pays to be first in line, even if it is the wrong line.)) 4) WHATEVER YOU DO.....DO NOT TAKE YOUR FATHER WITH YOU! Must have been 8 or 10 years ago now, when digital cameras were waiting in line and making a run for them was worth while. I was making a run for a digital camera at Walmart. My dad insisted on coming with me. Said he wanted it on his credit card. I told him he could pay me cash later and to stay home. No no no, he insisted on coming. He was about 70 years old then. I told him how vicious it gets as the 6 am open hits. I warned him to just get out of the way until the stampede goes by. He got up and we got in line about 4 am. We were near the front, #'s 5 & 6. He loved it, the people were chatty. he chatted with them. We warned him again of the rush at 6 and to get out of the way. He was all smiles and said not to worry. I told him I would meet him at the photo counter, just come AFTER the crowds. 5:45 am the crowds started pressing forward as the employees came to work and some were teasing us from the inside. Dad still insisting he was fine and he did not need to step out of the line. 6 am and the stampede was on! I ran to the photo counter climbing over the folks who wanted gameboys and got the first digital camera. And I waited for dad at the register. And I waited. And I waited. Finally I paid for it with my credit card and headed back to the front. The crowds were still streaming in and there was my dad in a chair being protected by 3 walmart employees. He was OK, but he was pushed down in the rush. He could not believe all his new "friends" he had been chatting with could turn so mean so quickly. By the time we got to Office Max (my second stop) he was downright PISSED. He would not even get out of the car, no matter how much I tried to reassure him that this was a safe SANE place. (Only 7 of us there when the doors unlocked.) I had to take him home after that. He still mutters about his Black Friday shopping trip. He has nothing good to say about those "nice ladies" he thought were so friendly at 5 am! 5) Have fun! There is a thrill of victory when you score that bargain! And better yet! I swear, its the only day you can literally "assult" someone and get away with it. (Just don't push too hard as you shove someone outta the way to grab the last doorbuster item. It might be someone else's 70 year old dad.)

Ooooooo! Wrapping paper is on sale?!?! Time to wrap another dozen gifts! Thanks for the tip. I'll head over there tomorrow. I need more red and silver to balance out the colors. As far as cluttering up the house....HA! I take them over to mom & dad's and leave them with strict orders to stay out of the gifts. The gifts can take up space in their house. ha ha ha! (Hmmm Is it possible that I am tempting their desire to open their gifts early?!? Well maybe! But they did it to us first when we were kids!)

YES! I officially started TODAY! Began sorting all the goodies I have been buying/collecting all year (starting Dec 26, 2009) And I wrapped the first 12 packages today. (Was a good shopping year for mom. She is making out like a bandit this year! I have a few more items to pick up, but I think I am about 80% done shopping. There had better be some good deals this Black Friday to get my money!) I'll sit down and do some more wrapping later this week. I have a new kitten who really likes this whole idea of ribbons on packages. Gonna have to do this wrapping in spurts. Now, my biggest problem will be once again keeping my parents OUT OF THE PRESENTS until Christmas. Mom has a new line this year: "You keep telling me I am an old lady....what if I die before Christmas?!? I had better open them now so I can enjoy them,....just in case I don't make it." I told her if she didn't behave I was going to send all three grandcats over for a long "vacation" at her house.

Earth Day Deal: Life & Planet Earth Blu-ray $50 for both!
Reinholt1 replied to CarpeDiem's topic in Online Hot Deals
I went with the Planet Earth Blu-ray deal from Amazon.co.uk. It will play on U.S. blu-ray players. It apparently is different from the U.S. Discovery Channel version of Planet Earth. Richard Attenborough narrates this one (not Sigorney Weaver)and it is the BBC original format, not edited down to meet US t.v time frames/specifications. And it also is supposed to have a bonus disk the US version does not. Best of all it was $29.49 shipped...LESS then the Amazon.com (USA) gold box deal of the day. -

Miracle on 34th Street vs The Santa Clause Christmas Vacation vs It's a Wonderful Life -
The CVS's in S.E. Michigan are advertising a 7 inch portable TV for $79 (with card) this week. Did you check there?? BTW - I would not pay more the $99 for a 7 inch portable TV. They are easy enough to find at that price. Geeks.com has got a 7in refurbished Tv for $82.99 + $1.99 shipping. I bought one from them last summer. It works great. :) http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=16-454-R&cat=TVS

Yep....everything wrapped and under the tree here too. (And so is my 80 year old dad who is STILL looking for his Dale & Thomas peanut butter popcorn.......It's there - BUT HE AIN"T GONNA FIND IT! Hee hee hee.) And yep, STILL shopping! Been too many good deals come through. But you know - there's nothing like being 1/2 way done with 2010 Christmas shopping! Man that is a great feeling!
-
You can always use it to decorate a gingerbread house. You won't need wrappers then!
-
Here is kind of an "old school" idea.....it wasn't that long ago that many Christmas decorations were made from paper. There are a few websites that are dedicated to showing the directions to these paper decorations. (It is amazing how many different ways there are to make paper chains....simple to do...clever....but we just don't "think" that way anymore because we don't decorate from scratch with paper anymore.) One of the many things they used to do was fold paper money into these little origami like ornaments for instance a small "christmas tree" can be made out of 3 or 4 one dollar bills. You can then stick in on your tree or in a card or "hide" in around your house as you decorate with these cute paper ornaments.

I've had those little prongs that hold the dvd in place break off too. It might be that. Gotta be careful, they can scratch. Hopefully yours will be OK. If not, you can always try some of that scratch repair stuff guys use on motor cycle helmet visors. I have had that bring back about 1/2 the scratched game disks the kids at the hospital play with.

Ooo I like that! Thanks Dbdaggit! What a great find. And thanks to 3wishes too. I am going to try a Zhu zhu run at TRU in the am so I will look at the Disney one then. But I like the rubber wheel on the Twist Trike. And that it converts is an added bonus. Thanks everyone! Perfect.
