  1. Believe it or not, most companies LOSE money trying to use layaway.

And why wouldn't they? Here remove items from your inventory and hold it for 1 customer who may or may not come back anytime soon. AND if it drops in price refund the difference. If they decide not to want it, you just turn around and refund it. And have you seen the layaway warehouse space? Bikes hanging from the ceiling and box after box of stuff some of which has been there for some time. Not to mention the boxes themselves - look on the side it's like $1.50 each or something.

Layaway wasn't a sales tool. It was a convenience for the customer. Even if it affects sales in some slight way, it won't adversely affect profit which is what the company cares about not sales. You can sell millions of dollars per year, but if you aren't profitable you toast. There's a pretty good book - "The customer is usually wrong" or something like that. Read it if you get the chance. One of the things they point out is if you want to really make it dump the worst 10% of your customers. Those customers that take up a disproportionate amount of time or resources. Devote that time to your best 10% of you customers and your profit will increase.

  2. T2050 is a Core Duo not Core Solo. And while it is "just a name" it does tell you if it is single or dual core. Core Solo = single core. Core Duo = older dual core. Core 2 Duo = new dual core.

The only Core Solo E1505 being offered from what I see is the low-end with the T1350

    Processors

    Intel® CoreTM 2 Duo Processor T7400

    (2.16GHz/667MHz FSB/4MB Cache)

    Intel® CoreTM 2 Duo Processor T7200

    (2GHz/667MHz FSB/4MB Cache)

    Intel® CoreTM 2 Duo Processor T5600

    (1.83GHz/667MHz FSB/2MB L2 Cache)

    Intel® Dual CoreTM Processor T2050

    (1.66GHz/667MHz FSB/2MB Cache)

    Intel® CoreTM Solo Processor T1350

    (1.66GHz/667MHz FSB/2MB Cache)

My personal opinion ... for $100 I'd jump up to the Core 2 Duo T5500 model.

  3. Just something for y'all to think about... MOST people have no reason to use anti-bacterial soaps, and probably don't want to!

    http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/eid/vol7no3_supp/levy.htm

The recent entry of products containing antibacterial agents into healthy households has escalated from a few dozen products in the mid-1990s to more than 700 today. Antibacterial products were developed and have been successfully used to prevent transmission of disease-causing microorganisms among patients, particularly in hospitals. They are now being added to products used in healthy households, even though an added health benefit has not been demonstrated. Scientists are concerned that the antibacterial agents will select bacteria resistant to them and cross-resistant to antibiotics. Moreover, if they alter a person's microflora, they may negatively affect the normal maturation of the T helper cell response of the immune system to commensal flora antigens; this change could lead to a greater chance of allergies in children. As with antibiotics, prudent use of these products is urged. Their designated purpose is to protect vulnerable patients.

BTW it's not real... read the whole ad... Supposedly they'll send a 1 time special offer for being a good sport about the April fools joke.

No I don't know what it is yet. But I signed up, but am about to leave and haven't gotten the good sport award email yet. I didn't want my fellow GD'ers to miss out though just in case it was something good.

BTW, I would have bought that thing in a heartbeat if it were real!

  5. I found out that you have to wait for the welcome e-mail when you sign up. Info for GC is in there.

    Mother Puss Bucket!

    Missed that...

Reviews written before you sign up will not be included in your review total for the promotion

Oh well my dozen+ I've done so far don't count. That SUCKS!

BTW -- Here: http://www.judysbook.com/promotions/barnesnoble/ is where you need to go to sign up for the promotion AFTER you sign up to write the reviews initially...

    Something else to note:

Reviews must be 50 words or more.

And it appears to be a online GC... not in-store.

  6. I liked the sounds of it ... at first...

It does seem like a really good deal. But, with the way rebates have been denied, lost, delayed, hassled, and generally turning into scam-a-ramas lately ... well ... all the stacked rebates on this deal isn't making me run for the Mastercard. :D

But, thanks for posting it anyway. :gd_purple

It's not really "stacked" rebates as I see it... There 2 items both on sale with rebates that just happen to go together naturally. Not "stacked" as in multiple rebates (ala CompUSA) on the same item.

MP3 player has $7 Instant rebate + $15 MIR ... I don't count "Instant Rebates" as rebates. Just another silly term for sale price. That one is a Newegg rebate - I'm pretty comfortable with that one.

The other is from buy.com for the card and is a Kingston/Buy.com rebate for $6... again I'm pretty comfortable. The 5% discount is for using paypal and is a discount not a rebate.

So we're really only talking 2 rebates and neither of them Compusa or TigerDirect thus I'm happy...

  7. I signed up... Thanks. I saw the info on the GC but now don't (minutes apart and it disappeared... hmm...)

I was reading some of the other reviews for my little town, and I don't know where these people are but they aren't here. One talks about sitting at a table and drinking beer at the local cinema... hmm, I've never seen tables (and it's a favorite cinema for us), and I've never seen them serve beer.

If I would have known about the inviting friends thing I would have asked for someone to refer me...

  8. Also, if someone has bad credit or no credit, pre-paid may be their only option...

You used to be able to get a cell phone without even a SSN... I suspect you still can. You did have to put up a heck of a deposit though. Way back when... I worked for Radio Shack. Guy came in wanted a phone and didn't even want to supply his name. I called the cellular company, and they said "sure no problem... $1000 deposit". He left and was back 15 minutes later with $1000 in cash for the deposit, and the several hundred more for the phone. Considering the neighborhood, I did not want to know where it came from... We put it in as "Mr Cash".

  9. oh, sorry. I was given a quote of $12.95 for shipping.

    No need to get fresh.

    sheeesh

Still $15 for a pair of decent pants is pretty cheap... personally the "mineral red" would be the killer for me... that and I'd look like I was wearing high-waters with 39 inch inseam pants on.

BTW, if you were really interested in them, check out the shipping options - I saw they had Priority Mail which shouldn't be distance affected (assuming continental US anyway).

  10. There are some other pretty nice deals looking around that site. I was able to use the Take 5 for $30 offer plus a free sub to Seed (never heard of it) and apply a $5 off coupon too. Which worked out pretty well. I was needing to renew my MaxPC sub, and needed to give my brother one too as a birthday present... Plus got 4 other magazines to boot. The MaxPC aren't the disc versions, but I really didn't care about that anyway - most of them are sitting unused in the pile.
