I have a 2005 Trailblazer EXT and the 3/36,000 warranty will expire in about another month, or 650ish miles. I looked over extended warranty info on the internet and I think the best plan for me is probably the General Motors Protection Plan (GMPP). I'm thinking about getting the 4/4,800 with a $0 deductible. Apparently the retails is about $2485 and the best quote I got was for $2,259. I called my local dealer and he was willing to back out the tax from that amount to match it. One of the online places that supposedly had the best prices wanted over $2600! Craziness!

Does anyone have a GMPP plan? Other extended warranty? Thoughts on this deal?

on my taurus we basically got the premium esp covers bumper to bumper till 6/100g miles.

50 buck deductible.

On the wife's other car same thing.

On the wife's escalade we got the bumper to bumper coverage for 1900 with 50 deductible.

some people say they are waste of money but with us it's the peace of mind. goto the dealer

and tell them the check engine light is on, fix it, grab a rental and your off.

then just to write that 50 buck check priceless...

i will tell you it was best to wait so if you do finance it your paying for interest on something

that doesn't kick on till the orignal warranty is over.

also do not go with those third party plans. the dealer will make you pay out of pocket and then you have to fight to get your money back..

good luck

I got a 4 year extended warranty on mine. It's been two and a half years, and I have never had one single problem. We joke around that paying for a warranty insures that nothing bad will ever happen.

Try Warranty Direct. I got 100,000 extra mile warranty on my lexus. I think it was 1400.00

Check them out. You can pay monthly also.

I'm pretty positive I want to stick with the GM plan. I just like the fact that it's basically like continuing my current warranty. It covers everything except a small list of things. (Some of which are body panels, bumpers, wind noises, odors, regular maintenance, batteries, etc.) If we bump up one more year to the 60/60,000, the price increases to $3,900. I am not sure I can justify $1,700 for the extra year. The 48/48,000, if I buy it just before my warranty expires, will cover me to 2012 and until just about 84,000 miles (depending how many miles are on the odometer when I buy it).

I also think of it like peace of mind. I'm sure if I don't buy it, everything will go wrong. :yup:

you should look at other gm dealers that seems very high. we got the cadillac which

is gm for way less then what you were quoted. make sure that warranty isn't 4 years from

manufactor date which you say is 05 which could have been made in 04 so you then

would tack on the four years from when the car was made not when the original warranty expires.

if you do get one goto the 100g or the most years and mile combo, you are more likely

to have problems later on. also remember have eveyrthing done at the dealer. oil changes and tire rotations and such that way they see a problem they will act on it.

hope that helps

Stick with the dealer or manufacture plan. Have witnessed bad experience with the others. To many ifs, buts, onlys, and excludes, in the contract. Of course its like an insurance policy its a gamble.

I don't know how they differ but I LOVE My GM warrenty. I got an 08 Yukon XL so it qualified for their newer 100,000 miles. Does the extended warranty cover GM roadside assistance? I had to call the other day because I woke up to a dead battery and DH was already at work with MY battery jumper in HIS truck  They had someone at my house to jump me off in LITERALLY 15minutes after I hung up the phone, granted I DO live in a small town...BUT

Didn't cost me a penny!

Good luck with your decision

I bought the extended warranty when I purchased my gm vehicle new. I paid $1700 for a 6 year 90K zero-deductible warranty. Actually, I paid $1400, but they knocked the $300 I negotiated off the warranty price from the sale price of the vehicle because they said $1700 was rock bottom on the warranty. Yeah, right.

I was looking for a warranty for a used car we purchased recently and the warranty company has been sending me emails offering $300-$400 off the original price they quoted me. Maybe the GMPP company will do the same thing to you if you wait a week or so.

I too think what you were quoted seems high. My brother-in-law called around looking for a warranty on his GM truck and he got quotes from dealerships in the area of $1200-$1500. I don't know what the coverage was but I would assume he was going for the max. Good luck!

We paid 1000 for a ten year/75,000 mile warranty on my 2006 Trailblazer (my husband works at an affiliate dealership). Make sure you don't buy a Powertrain Warranty. They try to pass it off as this great thing, but it doesn't cover anything!

The question becomes, if your vehicle needs $2200 worth of work done, do you want to drive it anymore or would you trust it? I am one of those people that don't believe in the extended warranties. If I had to have that much work on the car, I would pay to get it fixed then get rid of it. If nothing goes wrong, I am ahead. If something goes wrong I pay the same price and then get rid of the vehicle. Then again, I am also one of those people that performs the regular maintence as recommended and I don't complain about every squeak and rattle.

With 12,000 miles per year average driving, here is a chart of some of the best prices I got:

Major Guard – Best

Term

months/miles Coverage Through $200

deductible $100

deductible $0

deductible

End Date End Miles

36/36,000 Mar 4, 2011 71,350 $1,137 $1,285 $1,484

48/48,000 Mar 4, 2012 83,350 $1,612 $1,887 $2,259

60/60,000 Mar 4, 2013 95,350 $2,637 $3,198 $3,947

72/72,000 Mar 4, 2014 107,350 $3,131 $3,820 $4,753

Value Guard – Better

Term

months/miles Coverage Through $200

deductible $100

deductible $0

deductible

End Date End Miles

36/36,000 Mar 4, 2011 71,350 $1,086 $1,178 $1,290

48/48,000 Mar 4, 2012 83,350 $1,515 $1,688 $1,897

60/60,000 Mar 4, 2013 95,350 $2,453 $2,805 $3,223

72/72,000 Mar 4, 2014 107,350 $2,912 $3,341 $3,861

Basic Guard – Good

Term

months/miles Coverage Through $200

deductible $100

deductible $0

deductible

End Date End Miles

36/36,000 Mar 4, 2011 71,350 $918 $954 $1,000

48/48,000 Mar 4, 2012 83,350 $1,214 $1,290 $1,372

60/60,000 Mar 4, 2013 95,350 $1,856 $2,009 $2,178

72/72,000 Mar 4, 2014 107,350 $2,162 $2,351 $2,555

The charts might not show up right, but the one I think I'll choose is Major Guard (exclusionary policy...I'll tell you more about that in a minute) and the 4/48,000 starts from the day I buy the policy, which must be before my original warranty expires (up to 35,999 miles). There are other less expensive plans (value guard and basic guard) but I want a policy similar to my original warranty. It covers even wear and tear. It also includes the roadside assistance.

Here is what is NOT included:

Non-Covered Parts

Sheet metal

Body parts, panels and rails

Bumpers

Chassis frame

Cross members

Hinges

Trim, moldings, and bright metal

Paint

Rust damage

Convertible and vinyl tops

Weather-strips

Carpet and upholstery

Exhaust system and catalytic converter

Tires

Glass

Lenses

Sealed Beams

Light Bulbs

Batteries

Brake drums

Shock absorbers

Squeaks, rattles, wind noise and odors

Unless required in connection with a covered part we will not pay for: engine tune-up, suspension alignment, wheel balancing, filters, lubricants, engine coolant, drive belts, radiator hoses, heater and vacuum hoses, windshield wiper blades, air conditioning recharging, fluids, spark/glow plugs and wires, brake pads/linings and brake shoes/rotors, manual clutch disc, vehicle manufacturer recommended maintenance services and parts.

Every other part is covered!

I also want a $0 deductible. If there is a $200 deductible and something breaks every week, that could cost a lot!!! So, when comparing prices, it's very important to consider the deductible. The higher deductible plans are much less expensive. I'm thinking of going with the 4/48 because I probably won't have the vehicle much longer than that and the price increases significantly after that. For the next 4 years, it would be about $550/yr for the plan. For the fifth year, it would cost about $1,700. At that point, my children will be older and I can consider a new rig to cart them all around in. ;)

Consumer Reports latest magazine discusses Extended Warranties. The title of the article is:

Extended warranties: A high-priced gamble

Our survey of 8,000 new-car buyers shows they are usually a poor deal

Might want to pick up a copy and check it out. I think it is a free article for non subscribers if you go to their website.

Copied from Clark Howard's site...

Buy a manufacturer's extended warranty or one from your own auto insurer.

Don't buy a third-party contract. <--that would include a dealer.

I don't want to buy either of those, lol. I want to buy the GM warranty. Since posting, I've talked to my mom about this. She works at Ford but has a friend there who was a mechanic for Chevy for a long time before going to Ford. She asked him and he had purchased the same exact one I was thinking about (4/48,000 with 0 deductible). I'm definitely going to go with it. If that's what a trusted Chevy mechanic would buy, then that's what I'll buy. I'm sure they know about these vehicle repairs best since they're the ones who have to fix them. ;)

Those third party contracts are bad news. Our Attorney General is investigating them now. I saw it somewhere on Friday but I was too busy whining about my hurting hand so I don't remember where I saw it. Lately Continental Warranty has been calling. I started transcribing everything the guy was telling me. They LIE! I called the GM Legal Dept. to report that they claim to be selling the manufacturer's warranty. An attorney called me back but I missed her call. They will say anything to get a sale! I'm also going to forward my notes to the Attorney General in my state. I hate scumbags who lie and make people worried. They do it purposely because so many consumers just aren't aware and are easy prey for these losers.

Okay, I love this site. I just purchased an '04 Hyundai w/ 60k bumper to bumper. I did the dealer extended warranty ($1455), but didn't realize it started the day I bought the car, meaning of my 3 year extension, it overlaps by a year and 3 years for my husband's car ($1755)! That is such a rip off. I didn't even think to look online because I thought those might be scams, but seeing the input from you all is not only helpful- it will save me a lot of money. Thanks!

I don't think a lot of people realize that they overlap. And believe me, the dealership is not going to just outright tell you that they overlap, unless you ask.

Yes, that is why my mom told me to wait until right before the end to buy one. :)

That is really good to hear! Yes, it has the roadside assistance.

I ended up buying the 48/60,000 because I'd like to drive a few extra miles each year. Timewise, my warranty would have expired in June but it just about at 36,000 miles. I limit my driving a little because I didn't want to wear out the warranty too quickly. Also, if I move I may need to drive a lot more miles to do simple things like grocery shop, so I figured the extra $362 would be well spent for the extra 12k miles. The Chevy dealer near my house is a family owned and run business and they are super nice. The dad (an old guy) always offers to help with the kids, etc. To me, that extra service is the major thing that made my decision to buy it through them rather than through the online dealer. My local dealer matched the price so it basically cost me 38 cents more at the local dealer, including tax. I feel like I did well since I got what I want, from where I want, for the price I want. :)

Does anyone have a GMPP plan? Other extended warranty? Thoughts on this deal?

Sorry, day late and a dollar short.

One of my vehicles is an '04 Trailblazer EXT V8, which I bought new. Same situation as you, started shopping around for extended warranty. GMPP is the ONLY way to go with a GM vehicle. I used it with my old '00 Jimmy/Blazer, and it paid for itself once over. GM dealerships have no qualms with the GMPP, you bring your vehicle in, they service/repair it, and they hand you the keys. None of the "pay first, and then submit to your warranty provider". And you're absolutely correct with going with the $0 deductible. People get nickeled and dimed to death with deductibles.

I ended up buying my warranty online, as my local dealers couldn't touch the price, difference was $400 or $500. I think I bought it from the something-Black GM dealership that markets these extended warranties online.

I won't touch aftermarket warranties. Too many horror stories.
