DAMN compusa!

Recommended Posts

Remember that laptop deal on blackfriday? 17" notebook for $450 + a giftcard for $55 in the mail. Well I called compusa today to see why it took so long. Now they say they can't give me a gift card because they don't own the company anymore and there is nothing they can do. And this is after they told me 2 weeks ago that I would be receiving it in another 2 weeks. wtf, this can't be legal. Anyone else get screwed by compusa? Anything I can do legally now? Now I'm glad that their closing. Edited by pikapikapi

Was it for a straight up gift card or was it for a prepaid card? Because you do have legal recourse for the prepaid cards but not for the gift cards, I don't think. A lot of places bought out by liquidators stop issuing new gift cards immediately and only take older ones for so long. What I mean is, if you can't redeem it, they probably won't issue it. But I would still fight it and call back to get a prepaid Visa or something instead fo the gift card.

I didn't know of a $55 gift card rebate, just $100, which is why I asked if it was a straight GC.

I agree -- double check if you were supposed to get a giftcard or a prepaid card.

My husband bought some items from Comp USA on black friday and we got our prepaid card last week ($70). It is a prepaid debit card for the amount. Although it says CompUSA on it, it is a VISA debit card. It can be used anywhere. However, My husband said he will use it this week sometime just in case there is a problem with it since CompUSA is going out of business in our area.

Well I woudln't let the issue drop, either call the credit card company or call back Comp to work out a solution. It seems ot me that they were trying to get you to spend the GC in the store on the memory before even receiving the gift card, with the free installation offer. At some point, if they were mailing you the card, the must have taken your info, and sinc eyou calle dfor status a couple weeks agi, SOMETHING is in SOME system, so I would keep pushing until you get something...

This is the pits I know! We bought a big screen tv from Sun TV and paid $500 (YEARS ago!!) for the extended warranty. 2 months later, they filed Bankruptcy and went out of business!! We called and asked about our warranty and was told it was void. But we were still out the $500 we paid for it! The Bankruptcy court settled it for everyone with and extended warranty through them. We got $25 back :yuck: So we lost $450 for a 2 month warranty which was supposed to be a 7 year warranty! I will NEVER buy an extended warranty again!

Go onto crucial.com and figure out exactly how much to upgrade (you might have both slots full, so you might have to buy 2GB to get to 2 GB).

Call your credit card company, explain that you ordered it with 2GB and got 1GB. Tell them the company will not honor the difference. Explain to them that you went to the industry standard web site for memory and to upgrade to what it should have been will cost you X dollars and you would like to dispute that much of the charge.

If you have AmEx they will do it over the phone just like that. With other cards it will probably take longer and might involve paperwork. (note: always make big purchases with an AmEx card!)

Good Luck!

Well I called VISA today explained to them the situation and they credited me back the $55. I faxed them the .pdf file and my receipt. Let visa battle it out with them.
