Is this only for Vista? We are using XP still, and I want to make sure its compatible. Also, will this work with photoshop? Hubby really needs one of these.

From the Wacom site:

Bamboo - System Requirements

Platform PC or Macintosh

Operating System Requires computer running Windows 2000, XP, or Vista (32 or 64-bit) or a Macintosh running Mac OS X 10.3.9+, Intel or PowerPC Processor

Other Also requires color display, powered USB port, and CD/DVD drive

I think that they are just listing the Vista compatability because so many things are NOT Vista compatible.

In general, Wacom tablets have excellent photoshop support.

What does DH do with photoshop? If he is serious about it, you may want to consider something in the Intuos line instead.

Here is a comparison chart:

Well he draws comics, but currently has to do everything by hand. I thought it would be really nice for him to have something like this to simplify things for him. Plus, this would allow him to draw freehand directly into photoshop, correct?

Yes, it would.

The Bamboo is the most basic unit that Wacom makes. If it is just a hobby, I would say this would work "ok." If it is something that he really gets in to, and really enjoy, he could always upgrade to an Intuos later... Especially since they start at around $200 for the smallest one.

I bought a cheap tablet and it works fine, however, it does not have widescreen support and there aren't many driver updates. Wacom is an excellent company and I'm sure that this unit will receive much better support.

Other Wacom products do... I can't see why this wouldn't as well.

Just remember this is the Bamboo and not the Bamboo Fun, there are some differences:

http://www.wacom.com/bambootablet/compare.cfm

Namely, the Bamboo "Fun" comes with bundled software, more color choices (besides black), a cordless mouse, and the pen features an eraser (the standard Bamboo has no eraser). The "working area" of 5.8" x 3.7" is exactly the same.

The Bamboo Fun is only $30 more ($99 w/ free ship). It seems like a better offer, unless I am missing something:

The Bamboo Fun is also available in a medium size with an 8.5" W x 5.3" D working area for $199.00 (http://www.buy.com/prod/wacom-bamboo-fun-medium-digitizing-tablet-black/q/loc/101/205071745.html)

how often do you use the mouse instead of the pen?

the eraser seems like a must.......opinions?

Well, I would think you'd still need a mouse for regular computing... Opening programs, dragging and dropping that sort of thing.

If you don't get a Bamboo Fun with the mouse then you'll have to use your whatever mouse you are currently using on some other dedicated area of your desk.

You can still program one of the buttons to select the eraser tool. It just isn't automatic like the higher end models when you uses the back end of the stylus.
