vinnyandnicky
Sorry!! I think I posted under the wrong thread. Can anyone answer questions for me regarding PS3 system - I want to buy a PS3 system for my grandchildren for Xmas - I need to know will PS2 games work on the PS3 game system? What is the difference between the 40 and the 80GB system (Is the 80GB worth the added cost??) Also what accessories will be necessary to purchase for the PS3 system?? Many thanks for the heads up on the 20% Kmart coupon. I did purchase a 40GB PS3 system with the coupon today for 319 (what a buy!!!) but am now wondering if I should have spent the extra money for the 80GB system. Any advice????? mamapenguin
I have a 60G & I think you'll be fine with 40G. You can play PS2 & even PS1 games on it. http://www.us.playstation.com/PS3/About/ProductDetails/default.html?ILC-ffb&LCTN=LP_40GB That's the comparison between the 40 & 80 on the playstation site. Enjoy the look on their faces when they open it!
mom2monkiesx3
This is straight from Playstation I emailed them about this: The anticipated 40GB version of the PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system is not backwards compatible with PlayStation®2 format software. However, the 20GB, 60GB, and 80GB versions of the PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system are designed to be backwards compatible with PlayStation® and PlayStation®2 format software. Please note that some of the PlayStation® or PlayStation®2 format software titles may perform differently on your PLAYSTATION®3 system. We are currently verifying the compatibility of North American PlayStation and PlayStation 2 format software titles for play on the 20GB, 60GB, and 80GB versions of the North American PLAYSTATION®3 system. There is updated information available about backward compatibility on our website. Please click thelink at the bottom of the page to view additional information about game compatibility. For the 20GB version compatibility, please select the 60GB version to check for compatibility. http://www.us.playstation.com/News/ConsumerAlerts In addition, we would recommend that you have the latest version of the system update for the PLAYSTATION 3 system installed. To download the latest version of the system update please visit: http://www.us.playstation.com/PS3/Network/Updates If you have further questions regarding this message, please refer to your email case number:5xxxxx

Any advice?????Yes, the 80gb is worth the extra $100. You are not going to be able to play the PS2 games on the 40gb. Not all PS2 games will play perfectly on the 80gb, but there has been a link posted already where you can check to see if the games play and/or if they have any problems when played. As for accessories, you're going to want to pick up an HDMI cable if you have a TV that supports it. My 80gb only came with A/V cables, but I didn't even bother to check the picture on those, and simply connected it to the HDMI cable that I use for the upconvert DVD player. If you have a surround sound setup, then you'll want to pick up another HDMI cable (if your receiver supports it), or an optical cable to get the best sound quality that you can (and when it comes to playing Blu-Ray, you'll want the sound :)). Other than that, you'll want another controller -- or if one will be fine for a while, Sony has announced plans to release the DualShock 3 controllers (will have the old PS2 rumble feature), but I don't think those will be in stores until next year.
