christib327
Does anyone have any idea where I can find loose gemstones that aren't crazy expensive? I have seen lots of neat rings at antique shows and flea markets that need stones in them and I think this might be kind of fun to start buying. dmmiller
I'm not sure where to buy them that arent marked up alot, but My Mom & Dad went to the actual mines, and sifted thru the dirt and found they're own gems. Then you can pay to have them cleaned and cut and set if you'd like, She really got some beautiful gems. And a large variety. Its only about $20-50 to do this, but the real money comes into the cleaning and cutting. But still a lot cheaper than actually buying from the stores. She even went and bought a tumbler and is cleaning her own stones .. She got tons!
christib327
I think that would be lots of fun, but I don't think we have any near us. We're in Ohio. I'll have to do a little research and see where the closest place might be. Thanks :)
dmmiller
Yeah, i'm not too sure about Ohio.. They live in WVA, but were visiting her sister in NC at the time. Might want to check PA also, if your close to that state? :)
Rockfordmom
My Mom & Dad went to the actual mines, and sifted thru the dirt and found they're own gems. I did that in North Carolina a long time ago. Try www.firemountaingems.com, you can also request a catalog from them. They're a jewlery maker's supply company with good prices, not sure about shipping though.
Tyandmacsmom
Ebay, ebay, ebay. I have gotten many gems from there, genuine, and they aren't always expensive. You have to watch the auctions closely. It's a great place to start a collection. Also jtv.com, which is jewelry television. My mom works with gemstones and makes a lot of jewelry. It's stupid to buy from a jewelry store when you can get top gems from JTV for less. Check it out...you will be surprised.

I ordered a wooden box that has several tools and a loop in it and 20 or 25 ctw in faceted gemstones and 100ctw in cabachons. It was pretty reasonable because I had an additional 10% off code too :) I only ordered the one though because I haven't had any experience with them. Then, earlier today I did win a few things on ebay. (a small lot of mixed stones and then a .85ct amethyst) It's kind of bizarre that I ordered from those places and then you mentioned them, but that makes me feel more confident in my purchases!!! :)
