TiVo any one?

Recommended Posts

HDTV or non? If non-HD, then try picking up one of the RCA or Hughes DirecTV DVR's that has the Tivo software (the newer DTV DVR's do not use the Tivo software). They are only 40 hours (roughly 35-40), but I have heard nothing but negative things about the new DTV non-HD DVR's.

If you don't care about the software, then try calling up DirecTV and ask them what kind of promotion they could offer you on the DVR. The new ones are about 100 hours (maybe more). If they say there are none, then try calling at a later time, and if they still continue to, then you may want to look around at Dish and your cable company's offers, and then mention those to a DTV rep. I have never done this, but apparently it works well for many others.

Good luck :)

I have HDTV, I have no idea how all this works, do I have to pay for some kinda service a month like Direct TV? What ever happen to the good ole days when you popped in a tape and pressed REC. I know I know I am aging myself.

Do I have to buy the TiVo from Direct TV since I have HDTV?

I purchased my original DVR w/Tivo directly from DTV a few years ago. I've picked up 3 more since then, all from Ebay. Two were factory refurbished, with warranties, one is just a slightly used DVR. I have had not a problem with any of them in the 3-4 yrs we've had them. I looked on DTV's site and they have lots of info regarding the HD-DVR option, so if you have not already done so, read up on it there first to find out the fees, system requirements, etc. Then you can hunt around to find the best price on the DVR...whether it be from DTV, Ebay or some other site. My understanding the last time I tried to order equip from DTV was that they no longer sell the equipment, but rather lease it to you. After I argued that I already owned the rest of my equipment, they finally told me that I COULD purchase one outright, but it was 3x what I originally paid for the DVR. Basically, they want you to lease the equip. Also, I do not see any DTV w/Tivo equipment listed on the site...but you can find them on Ebay for sure (HD included).

You can go right through DirecTV and save a little on the monthly cost. The monthly cost of Tivo is about $13.99, but through DTV, you pay $4.99/month for the service.

If you want to received HD channels, then you'd want to look into the HD-DVR (HR20 model). I'm currently looking for one at a good price -- they cost about $300 if you purchase it, and do not lease it through DTV. HD service is an additional $9.99 through DTV, and does not include all of the HD channels available.

After you get a DVR, you'll never think back to those days of having to use a VCR, VHS, and the record button lol.

I avoided TIVO altogether and bought a Panasonic DMR-EH55s. It has a 200GB hard drive so you can save your shows and then burn to DVD at your convenience. It has a tv tuner and upconverts to HDMI. Best part is NO FEES. I have Comcast Digital Cable connected to mine.

I also have Comcast Digital Cable...how much did you spend on your Panasonic DMR-EH55s? and where did you get it?

I bought it at ABT electronics store, it's just outside Chicago. I had a tough time deciding where to buy it. There are a few websites that have it for between $420.00 to $470.00 but their return policy is no returns on open merchandise. Then i narrowed it down to Circuit City.com and Abt...I could have ordered it from Circuit City since it's not in store but i didn't want to wait so i went to ABT and bought it there. It $499.99 but i had a price match from Circuit City.com for $479.99 This is the best alternative to TIVO out there. I did my homework. Best thing about this unit is the picture quality using LP mode. It's almost as good as SP mode. The only compliant i've read about is the TVGOS or TV guide onscreen. It uses the broadcast signal to update it's TV guide but some people have had problems getting it to setup correctly with their cable box. It has a cable box control that it uses to search channels to find the signal. I really won't be using it too much to have it record at a certain time. Most of my recording will be manually recording while i'm watching tv. So far the picture quality is great. The SD card reader displays pictures too.
