How on earth do you keep a tree alive that long? I have heard sugar water but then heard, no regular water? They recommend thanksgiving weekend to come get them!!! sammy50 Posted November 15, 2006 Share Posted November 15, 2006 When we still got live trees, we always put the stump into a 5 gallon bucket with small rocks in the bottom. Then we pour lots of water into the bucket and kept it filled halfway all season. They dried out a tiny bit at the very bottom, but kept fresh otherwise. siageah Posted November 15, 2006 Share Posted November 15, 2006 Water, water, and water! First, have the place you get it from cut an inch or so off of the bottom stump. If they don't do it, you do it. Then when you put the tree up, add hot water to the container for the first watering. It will help loosen any sap that was formed since it was cut (if it was a couple of hours prior, anything more than that and you will need to make a new cut.) Do not place it somewhere overly warm, like a heating vent, fireplace, etc. Try not to keep your house overly warm or it will dry out the tree. The first couple of days that tree will suck up a TON of water. Check it twice a day and refill constantly. It will slow down the water consumption in a couple of days then you can check once a day. Keep it filled! It really isn't that hard, just keep it watered. That is the single most important thing. And you'll have a beautiful tree for weeks! I'd love to have a real tree but I don't want to wait until 2 weeks before Christmas to put it up. Ours always goes up a day before Thanksgiving and who knows when we take it down.
