Cargirl Posted November 13 Posted November 13 This year I am searching for the best laptop deal and looking for some feedback on what others think is a good deal? I do not do any gaming and just use for creating documents & spreadsheets , searching the web. I am liking the Dell ones but wondering if there's a better deal somewhere that I am missing?

I heard i7 is the one that I should look at for a laptop for school. Sure. Best thing to do is sit down and make a list of the things you want to do with the laptop. Then make a list of the applications you will use to do those things. Find the most demanding application and note its system requirements and recommended specs. Then consider how you will be using the laptop. How long will you need it to run on a battery? How big a screen is best for you. Once we know these things, we can compile a list of laptops that you can comfortably run for years. I typically get a decade out of a desktop and half that out of a laptop. As for the processor, i7 is a marketing term. For Intel, each generation of CPU features good enough (i3), good (i5), better (i7), and best (i9). Typically, power use and price increase and battery life decreases as you climb to 'best'. So long as you exceed the recommended specs for your most demanding application, which CPU got you there will not be that important. PassMark CPU Benchmarks - New Laptop CPUs Performance
bribri25 Posted November 18 Posted November 18 @len_mullen After browsing the NewEgg ad, I'm highly considering CPU upgrade (+ required MoBo) and wanted to get your thoughts. I have NVidia 4070 GPU, and 4th Gen Intel (don't laugh). I primarily use Lightroom, Photoshop, and Premiere Pro. I've read that Intel has slight advantage (with NVidia GPU) with codecs in Premiere, but probably negligible. I've always had Intel, but the 13th/14th Gen snafu has me considering AMD. I don't think I need top of the line, but upgrade is probably overdue; looking at 13th Gen i7 (or AMD equivalent). What's your thoughts on AMD vs Intel and which generation? Then, a compatible MoBo with Thunderbolt for my external drive? Especially with deals coming up that you may know of, as well Thanks!

I assume you are looking to upgrade a desktop not a laptop. The requirements for your most demanding application (Premiere Pro) are Intel® 11th Gen or newer CPU with Quick Sync, Windows 10 (64-bit) version 22H2 (or later) or Windows 11, 16 GB of RAM for HD media or 32 GB or more for 4K and higher, 8 GB of GPU memory, fast internal SSD for app installation and cache, additional high-speed drive(s) for media, 1920 x 1080 or greater display, and HDR 1000 for HDR workflows. Quick Sync is a feature of Intel integrated graphics. CPUs with integrated graphics do not have an F designation. I would get a 12th gen i5/i7 to avoid the 13/14 gen drama. If your case, PSU, and cooling are adequate, and you are game an upgrade, consider something like this... GIGABYTE B760M DS3H DDR4 Bundle with Intel 12600K and G.SKILL F4-3200C16D-32GVK and a big, fast SSD. Clone your existing system onto the SSD (assuming Windows 10x64 or Windows 11). Should be fun.

Thanks for taking the time. Yes, desktop; sorry, probably shouldn't have hijacked the laptop thread. I like the idea of 12th Gen; probably i7. I already have upgraded the GPU, and to 1TB SSD. I have 16TB Lacie external HDD, using USB 3.1, so really looking for a MoBo that supports Thunderbolt, so that combo probably won't be ideal. Definitely gives me something to work with though. Thanks for the input! Also probably go with 64GB RAM. I see some deals/very low prices on the 12th Gens, so maybe fine without a bundle.

TMC4real Posted November 22 Posted November 22 (edited) I think what you are planning to do with it is the most important part. Then, how much do you have to spend. There are several good deals out there. Here are a few: https://www.bestbuy.com/site/lenovo-yoga-7-2-in-1-16-2k-touchscreen-laptop-amd-ryzen-7-8840hs-with-16gb-memory-1tb-ssd-artic-grey/6571363.p?skuId=6571363 Lenovo - Yoga 7 2-in-1 16" 2K Touchscreen Laptop - AMD Ryzen 7 8840HS with 16GB Memory - 1TB SSD - Artic Grey This is a touchscreen.
