Myrage Posted June 30, 2006 Posted June 30, 2006 I've got a Dell Dimension L Series (L667R) that is about 5 years old that needs a memory upgrade. I'm puter' illiterate so....any help would be appreciated. :)
Marcster Posted June 30, 2006 Posted June 30, 2006 According to Crucial.com, your Dell takes SDRAM PC133 Ram. The Dell Dimension L Series has a maximum capacity of 512MB, which can be achieved from two 256MB chips of Ram. Here is the link to Crucial's offerings:http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.asp?Mfr%2BProductline=Dell%2BDimension+%2F+Dimension+XPS&mfr=Dell&tabid=AM&model=Dimension+L+Series&submit=Go but you could look around, any SDRAM PC133 should work... (make sure not to get Ram designed for a notebook, of course, that'll be a different shape).
Scott Posted June 30, 2006 Posted June 30, 2006 Do you need ram, or are you out of space to "store" things on your computer? Your title confuses me a bit.
Marcster Posted June 30, 2006 Posted June 30, 2006 Your title confuses me a bit.Yeah, I was thinking that too...
Myrage Posted June 30, 2006 Author Posted June 30, 2006 Well to be honest, I'm not sure. I've had a couple of messages that refer to memory full and before I could do something about it the whole screen went black. My computer will boot up now; but the screen will not come on. I dunno...forgive me for my ignorance. :)
Scott Posted June 30, 2006 Posted June 30, 2006 If you were getting a message about running out of space, that is a Hard Drive problem. Physical memory or "ram" is a temporary memory that the computer uses while it is on, but is cleared out when you restart the computer or shut it down. When you turn your computer on, are you getting anything at the beginnning? Do you at least see the bios screen and such? Or is the screen completely blank all the time? Make sure that the connections for the monitor are secure and that it is on. You can start with that. If you can't get it to boot to windows at all, you may need to repair the installation, or re-install. If there is no picture at all, no matter what you do, then I would suspect a more serious hardware issue.
RossMAN Posted June 30, 2006 Posted June 30, 2006 If you encounter this error message again can you possibly take a screen print of it?
Marcster Posted June 30, 2006 Posted June 30, 2006 If you encounter this error message again can you possibly take a screen print of it?Or even a digital pic of the screen's display...
Myrage Posted June 30, 2006 Author Posted June 30, 2006 Negative...just a blank/black screen when I try to boot up.
RossMAN Posted June 30, 2006 Posted June 30, 2006 I would recommend: 1) Find your Windows CD's, backup your data, reformat the hard drive and re-install Windows. 2) Upgrade RAM.
Scott Posted June 30, 2006 Posted June 30, 2006 I would recommend: 1) Find your Windows CD's, backup your data, reformat the hard drive and re-install Windows.2) Upgrade RAM.If The monitor has no display at all, I don't think that doing a clean install will accomplish anything. How would you follow the prompts for the windows install? You may need a Ram and or HardDrive upgrade, but you will need to figure out what is making the monitor fail first.
RossMAN Posted June 30, 2006 Posted June 30, 2006 Have you considered buying a new computer? Dell recently had a Dell Dimension 3100 with 17" LCD for $419 featuring an Intel Pentium 2.8GHz w/ HT, 512MB RAM, 80GB SATA Hard Drive, DVD Burner, Windows XP Home, 17" flat panel LCD and 1 year warranty. If you don't need the 17" LCD you could easily sell that for around $150 - $200. If you're not in a hurry to upgrade your RAM, I have some spare 256MB PC133 which are yours for free. It may take me a few weeks to find them though.
Marcster Posted June 30, 2006 Posted June 30, 2006 Negative...just a blank/black screen when I try to boot up.Has anyone considered that Myrage's video card might've gone South?
Myrage Posted June 30, 2006 Author Posted June 30, 2006 I think I'm going to bring the harddrive into work and beg the IT department to take a look at it.
Marcster Posted June 30, 2006 Posted June 30, 2006 I think I'm going to bring the harddrive into work and beg the IT department to take a look at it. Take the whole tower, not just the hard drive... I have a feeling that your video card or the monitor is the problem.
