Best and worst gifts from Black Friday

In a similar vein to best and worst memories, what are some of the best and worst gifts you've given from Black Friday shopping.  I guess I should explain a bit more.  I don't mean the hottest gift you've give, but more like the best and worst reaction as results of a gift you've bought for someone on Black Friday.

I'm trying to think of the worst gift, one that didn't turn out as planned was the first year I did my shopping online a few years ago.  I bought my niece one of those ride on cars, not a battery powered car, but one you'd push.  Anyways, since she was so young I don't know if she really knew what it was, and since she got so many other gifts, she never really played with it.  I'm not disappointed as it was fun just trying to be able to order it, especially since I wasn't used to Target's website so it took a while to figure it out.

Incidentally one of the best gifts I got was the same year also as a result of online shopping.  I bought a few things online at Best Buy and needed about 10 bucks or so more to get free shipping.  So I thought of random things to get, and looked at CD's.  I found a couple Janis Joplin CD's that I knew my mom didn't have so I added them in the cart since they gave me just enough for the free shipping.  I bundled them together with the big gift I got her, and she was much happier with the CD's.  She is a big fan of Janis Joplin (I'm not so much), but she later told me she gets tired of hearing the same songs they always play on the radio and these had other songs on them, including her favorite.

It just shows the best gift isn't always the ones you plan on buying, and the worst gift could be the one you figured would be the biggest hit.

So anybody else have best and worst gifts they'd like to share.

I guess the best, in recent years, was 2 years ago. I got my daughter (in law) an iPad.  I didn't see much reaction, but her mom told me later that she texted her and said "OMG, Tami got me an iPad!  I guess she really does love me!".  (In my defense, I really do love her and I really do show it without spending tons of money on her. She was just a little insecure for a while there).

And the worst, I guess, was about 7 years ago. My youngest was 13 and one of the things on his list was a metal detector (don't ask me why). So, not knowing anything about them, I found one on BF for like $20 and I got it.  He never even took it out of the box, to my knowledge. When I asked him about it several weeks later he said "Mom, that's a toy, it wouldn't find much".  LOL, oops, my bad. He did get plenty that year that he WAS excited about, and he never would have complained about the metal detector if I hadn't asked.

Worst gift i've ever given was apparently a computer.... DD12 (at the time) wanted a computer in her room.. family of 6 one income. Couldn't get her a brand new fancy machine, but my mom works at a hospital and they were upgrading everyone's systems and were selling their old ones (less than a year old!!!) for  $50! with lcd monitor and everything!  Here I thought i scored big time! nope, she got angry at me and cried for the rest of the day because it wasn't a laptop. Incidentally, that was the year she learned the value of a dollar earned :)  and now has to go BF shopping with me!

Worst gift I've ever gotten wasn't "bad" but the whole situation was. I acknowledge the effort, love and thought. I was 6 mos into my 3d pregnancy in 3 years (read low self esteem and over emotional)  I needed new underpants. Hubby tried so hard. he got me "sexy" patterned underpants! Unfortunately he did not know that women's underpants sizing is NOT the same as pants sizing... Bring on the size 16 underoos!  The whole family could have gotten into them... at the same time. * note to all the men out there, if you're not going to get the size exact... buy the tops to big and the bottoms too small!

best gift I've ever gotten... either the computer I am typing on right now, or the year my mom quit buying us stupid random crap she finds on clearance and just got us a gift certificate to the butcher shop down the road!!! Not that I don't appreciate the randomness, or the fact that atleast she got it on sale, but i really don't need a cupcake maker, and icee thingy, popcorn maker (i do have a microwave, and also... I can't eat popcorn. it makes me sick) a cotton candy maker, ONE candle stick, chipped dishes, christmas place settings that were on sale because all the cups were broken etc.                       ok quit laughing at my completely dysfunctional family! We put the FUN in DysFUNctional!

Worst gift I received was Aqua Globes. My BF partner saw me grab some one year because I wanted to try them out.

She thought she would help me out and buy me two more boxes as my Christmas gift. It was a bit bizarre.

Worst gift I gave was some little robot toy thing that I didn't understand, but the staff said was a hot gift... turns out it needed to be played with other robot thingies also. I totally forget what they were called, this was some years ago.

Best gift I gave? Teenage girls + handbags & wallets on clearance + 70% off at Boscov's. I bought them each several and spent under $20 for each of them. They loved them.

Best gift I received was a HUGE box of Whitman's chocolates. It was GIANT.

The worst thing I bought on Black Friday was a digital picture frame. Never got much use.

Best thing I 'bought' on Black Friday was a phone plan. Last BF, I switched from Verizon to AT&T. With Verizon we had two text phones and a data phone with 2g of data for $130/month. With AT&T, we went to three smart phones and 15g of data for $10 more per month. Plus we got rollover. We did pay full freight for the phones, but we got $150/phone to switch and amortized the cost of the phones over 30 months interest free. The recipients of the phones were delighted and continue to be delighted.
