Confused by Lightning Deal and Customer Service Response

I hope it is okay to post this here, but I just tried to purchase a Skip Hop Owl toy for $4.79. It is typically an add-on item and because of that, it wouldn't let me check out with less than $25 in my cart. I did a chat with CS to ask about whether this was an error or if the add on rules still apply. Here is the copy and paste. I'm not even sure what was being suggested here... and does anyone know the answer?

Me:Hi, I have a Lightning Deal in my cart right now, but it won't let me check out because it is showing as an add-on item. I thought the Lightning Deal would "over rule" that... I just placed a larger order a few minutes before, too. :(

Varun:Hello, my name is Varun. I'll certainly try to help regarding your concern.

Please give me a minute.

I checked and see that that the deal is over, Tara .

It is 100% Claimed .

Actually, it does add with the add-on rule, Tara l.

Me:It is in my cart and says I have 5 minutes left to claim it.

Varun:Okay, Tara.

May I know the number of quantities you want to buy?

Me:1

Varun:Okay, Tara. In that case, I can put the order in the deal price, I request to place an order with 6 or 7 quantities to make the order more than 25$.

You can return the rest for a full refund.

So, in that way, you also get the deal as well as one quantity.

Me:No thank you. I'll pass on the deal if that is the only way to do it.

Varun:Please let me explain. The normal price is $5.99.

The deal price is 4.79$.

You can just place the order. If the deal does not apply. I will edit the price of the items as 4.79$.

You just have to place an order with 7 quantities and refuse 6 quantities so that you get a full refund for the rest of the 6.

I am really trying to help you, Tara.

Me:I'm not sure I even understand how that would work. It sounds like I would have to ship back the others, spending much more than the $1.20 that this deal saves me, in order to"refuse" the others. The deal expired in my cart, anyway.

Varun:I do understand, Tara.

That is why I am editing the price for you.

I can manually edit the price to 4.79$ without the deal.

You do not have to pay 1.20$ more.

In fact, you will get the item for $4.79.

Me:Too much hassle for such a small savings, so I'm just going to pass. Thanks for your help, though!

Varun:You are most welcome. But I really wanted to help you with the available option, Tara.

That is why I needed to let you know.

Okay, Tara.

We do not have a lot of offers coming up.

We have black friday deals coming up.

I don't think what they were suggesting would even work?  Can you still refuse a package without having to pay return shipping after you open it and take something out of it (the one you actually want)?

ya you cant refuse a delivery after you open it to take something out of it

Yeah, it wouldn't work. I was wondering if maybe I was misunderstanding something, but I don't know how else to take it..?  Not to mention, that even if it did work, I wouldn't want to deal with the hassle and tie up $25+ for weeks just to save $1.20.

I did LOL at, "We do not have a lot of offers coming up." I don't know if this was a typo or if he was really wanting me to take advantage of his offer and wanted to know that the deals were sparce, so I should snag this one up.  Hehehe... I'm sure it was a typo. ;)

I'm going to hope they've ramped up their customer service for the holidays, and he was too new to know what he was talking about.

As far as lightning deals being add-on items, it doesn't even make sense that the lightning deal would NOT override that. I hope that was just a one time glitch.
